All-New X-Men #20

3

We've seen a slight change since 'Battle of the Atom.' Find out who the team is up against now. And what's up with that kiss on the cover?

The Good

It's always interesting when a writer changes the direction of a series. It may not be a huge change but this started with the original X-Men in the present at Wolverine's school. Now we find the original five (and Kitty Pryde) switching "sides" and hanging out with Cyclops' X-Men. We get to see some different interactions as well as the team continue to try to find their place in the present.

Adding another new twist was the appearance of X-23. She was always an interesting character in the X-Men but never quite fit in with the adult members. How will she get along with the younger X-Men and Cyclops' new students? With this and last issue setting things up for a confrontation against the Purifiers, it'll be good if they can have X-23 on their side.

Brian Michael Bendis also throws in his typical humor despite some darker moments. X-23 has been through a lot yet the series doesn't go into the fully dark areas it could.

There's some cool scenes in the second half of the issue. I'm surprised the new costumes are actually growing on me.

The Bad

Let's start with the cover. The fact that we have that cover plus what was written in the solicit is enough to make you seriously shake your head.

It's hard to say how X-23's appearance here will be. Is she going to stick around? It's great for her to have a spot in an ongoing series. Hopefully we'll get some great exploration into who she is as we have in the past.

We have two different artists here. I usually dig Mahmud Asrar and Brandon Peterson's styles but they are a bit different and don't really mesh well.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Purifiers but I am curious to see where this story with them will go.

The Verdict

The All-New X-Men might just be getting used to their new situation with Cyclops' team of mutants but things are about to change in big ways. X-23 being thrown into the mix could spice things up and battle the Purifiers never is a good thing for the team. Brian Michael Bendis balances some slightly dark moments with the humor we've grown to love. The use of two different artists unfortunately makes the flow of the story a little jarring. We have a young team of X-Men and we'll see if they're ready to take on this latest incarnation of the Purifiers.

This is, by far THE worst characterization of X-23 I have ever seen in my entire life. It was horrible. Even in Avengers Academy X-23 still felt like X-23 because of her mannerisms and dedication towards her friends, yeah the series was bad but overall I could at least respect that. Bendis demonstrated pretty simply that he has never read a comic book with Laura in it his entire life. X-23 has always had a formal form of speaking and a cold, calculating look/personality, even towards her close friends. She had always shown concern but she still retained her restricted character. Here? she basically speaks like a regular teenager who, if not for the dire circumstances would ask to go to the mall, hell I was even afraid that she'd say something like OMG. I don't even mind the romance thing anymore, if it had been well executed I might have given it credit, who knows, but bendis is very doesn't treat characters with respect. X-23 doesn't EVER say something like wow or That's so Weird, she'd instead say This is very peculiar because that's how she has been raised, as a basic robot who eventually corrected her mistakes and became human. Even if she spends most of her time around other teenage girls i doubt she'd pick up on the lingo, Scratch that, I don't doubt, i'm SURE she wouldn't, not at least if 10 years don't pass.

Terrible, simply terrible.

Read this out of curiosity... how nice it was to see teenagers who weren't being total a-holes to each other.

I can only agree, this issue made me hate Bendis so much.

This just might be the worst written X-23 I have ever read. The Savage Land one wasn't great but hoooleeeeey shit.

It's also hilarious how they try to paint Avengers Arena as some kind of traumatic experience for her since she's been through way worse more than once before.

Other than that, the writer seems very intent on making Jean Grey seem as ulikeable as he possibly can. Is she turning supervillain soon or something?

All in all, All New X-Men has failed to impress so far. The basic concept AND almost every single issue have been mediocre to awful. Do not buy this book.

What ever happened to Bendis's Daredevil days? The only book I like of his now is Uncanny. I really like what he's done with Cyclops. Sill, he used to be a much better writer.

It's obvious that Bendis has no respect for previously established characterization.

Apparently, Daredevil is cursed (see also Frank Miller and Ann Nocenti).

They both had excellent runs on Daredevil (in both cases, their first major comics work), but only produce utter garbage these days.

@theacidskull: you took the words right out of my mouth. When I first seen the preview of the cover I had hoped that the story about how the hell X-23 and Cyclops could get together would be plausible or at least not terrible. After seeing how Bendis is writing Laura, I've lost hope. It is interesting though, how metaphorical the relationship is becoming between weapon X/facility and Marvel in their treatment of X-23.

You all do realize she may have been written that way as a result of Avengers Arena, right? Something like that changes people drastically.

@rixec: I could go along with that, if Arcade kidnapped them to teach them all how to fit in better. Nothing that happened on that island would lend itself to this.

I have liked what Bendis has done with this book, but this was not a great issue.

The Purifiers are just boring. Reading multiple pages of their sermons...it's like, I get it already. They think mutants are satan. Next villain please!

so from a cold, distant girl she turned into a teenage mall-rat-type-girl because of traumatic event? -_-

You'd be surprised what traumatic events could do to people. Also, she was nuked right in the face. Who knows what that did to her.

She was kidnapped and placed into a game that was set up to break them, kill each other, and so on. Plus, she did get nuked right in the face. Who knows what that did to her.

People have suffered drastic changes from head injuries and, like I previously said, she got nuked in the face. What if that jumbled up her head a bit?

Laura's the last person I would picture partaking in Bendis' brand of overly quippy, casual conversational dialogue. I've tolerated it before, but good lord. Not everyone needs to talk like Spider-Man, Brian!

Well she's been through worse. and it only proves my point that they ruined x-23.

You are quite pessimistic. All it takes is one issue for a character to be ruined? Good Lord...

No, but knowing bendis, and having seen how he writers X-23, tied with the fact that Bendis will be using her more often in the future, shows that if not now, her character will soon be ruined.

I picked up the issue because 1. The cover and 2. I can't pick up my issue of Scarlet Spider til I get back to the states. But I jumped off the ship from the series before BOTA and thought maybe now would be a great time to get back into the series but after this looks like I'm going back to Amazing X-men for me.

By far the weakest issue of All-New since... Well, ever. I liked everything up until the ending. I'm just not a fan of the purifiers. Plus the art was spotty at best. Really hate it when two artists are used on a book and both have different styles. The only time that works is when you have flashbacks.

It took Bendis a few issues to get a handle on Emma's voice and now she's great. I expect the same with X-23.
