A Tale of Two Monsters
This is a really solid issue from the short lived six issue series of the Rampaging Hulk, not to be confused with the more famous Marvel mag of the same name that ran from 1977-1981. In this issue we have the age old tale of Banner on the run. But, hidden beneath this issue's simplicity is a lot of cool stuff. Firstly, one can't complain about a well drawn and written fight between the Hulk and Fantastic Four. Leonardi's style has tinges of both Kirby and Romita Jr., but manages to be his own semi-cartoonish kinda boxy yet still expressive style. It's really odd, but it compliments Greenberg's writing rather well. The issue's style and Greenberg's prose make this a comic that could have come out in the silver age. The one breath of fresh air exception is that Sue holds her own here in combat and pummels the Hulk with her powers for several panels, something sadly, the Silver Age would not have featured prominently. It's interesting to see the rapport develop between Thing and Hulk, as Ben starts to think that he and the Hulk aren't so different. Overall, this is a fun stand alone issue that can be acquired cheaply, but in my opinion is an enjoyable diamond in the rough of mediocre late 90's Marvel material.
