Need some recommendations…

My nephew in-law recently told me he read a Green Lantern comic at school and he really liked it. His 13th Birthday is coming up and my brother’s girlfriend says he only has some of the Walking Dead trades. He also told me he loves the Hulk. I do not read Hulk or Green Lantern comics so…

What are some good story arcs, minis or runs I can pick him up for his birthday to start his comic collection. Keep in mind I do not want to spend too much, about $50. Any help would be appreciated.

In honor of my Grandmother...

My grandmother passed away on May 31st. She was a great person and always inspired us to draw, paint, and be creative. While cleaning up recently I came across a sketch book she gave me in 1995 when I was only 16. Knowing that I loved comics, she went to a local comic shop, bought a bunch of comics she thought I would like, and filled the sketch book with drawings from the comics.

Some sketches are better than others, but as I look through this I can't help but smile. Nanny had never read a comic book, and I'm sure she had no clue who the characters she was drawing were. But this is something I will treasure forever. I just wanted some people other than my immediate family to see what a talented artist my grandmother was, and to enjoy looking at these sketches with me.

Thank you Nanny for your support for the 33 years I was blessed to have you in my life, you will be missed!

What were you playing with at 5 yrs old?

The other day my 4 1/2 yr old son asked me what I played with when I was a kid.  This got me to thinking what had happened to those beloved toys. While a lot of my toys were destroyed in the process of being buried outside, left in the rain, encased in ice in my basement freezer, and launched on rockets, the majority of my toys were donated to less fortunate cousins as I grew out of them.  From there I have no Idea what happened to them.  I've picked up a few vintage Star Wars figures over the years, but in all honesty I didn't play with those as a kid. My Loves were He-man and Thundercats.
Easter Sunday I was discussing this with my brother and my mother overheard and told me that she still has some of my action figures, and that my son plays with them when he visits!  She opened her closet and pulled out bins of what was most likely my nephews old toys.  Disappointed I began to put them back away when I found these:

He-Man and Stinkor
He-Man and Stinkor

I wish Skeletor was there but oh well.  It may only be two of what was once a vast collection, but I am thrilled to have this reminder of my youth to share with my son.  He actually loves He-Man too now that we have it on DVD.  He-man and Skeletor where the first two action figures I ever owned.  I even remember getting them at a birthday party I had at an ice cream shop (I had a Popeye cake!)  I think now I'm going to have to try to get my He-Man collection back!

So, what were you playing with when you were 5 yrs old?
