Comic Vine's Top 100 Spider-man Universe Stories: Final Order Voting

Hello All! (who are you again? :P ). I know it's been a while since this community project was active (I was a bit busy). However, I'm fully back so let's continue before we all forget this ever existed...

Of course, let's review because ALL of us have forgotten including myself:

  • in this thread we got 20 or so nominators who came together in a pm and nominated 100 or so stories
  • and in this thread we allowed community members to nominate additional stories and cosign existing stories (aka add a point to each story's total)

What's left to do you ask? Well, now we need to decide the final order of the list. Below you will find the list of stories we have and their inital order. Your job is pretty simple: VOTE! you have 5 votes to use however you want (to clarify you can use them on one story or 5 or however you want to do it).

Note: if there are any stories you think are missing don't hesitate to nominate them, but they MUST have 3+ sentences with them to be nominated and remember they don't have the same advantage as the other stories as they won't have any cosigns. These community nominations will be taken up to June 29th so Poet can add the story to the full list.After the 29th Poet will stop taking any additional nominations.

Voting ends July 8th, 2013 6:30 EST. Huzzah!

So this is separate from the initial voting?

yep. it's seperate, so if there is anything at all you would want to change about this order (story too high/low you can change it by voting. NOTE: one person's votes won't drastically change, but the community's votes WILL change it).

Oh, if you're back, does this mean the best comics of the month voting thing is coming back? :)

that's tommorow's project. Best of the Month of May voting will be ready for voting tomorrow, so start thinking about what you want to vote for :D

I'd like to use all five of my votes on

  • What if? Spider-Man vs Wolverine - 2008 ("The Spider Who Went Into The Cold")

This is a fantastic one off story and I'd really like to see it make the top 100.

11 is really good number to start off with especially for the first few hours of this being up :D

oh, I know some people have this thing where they complain about mods editing their posts which I completely understand, so I wanted to put a disclamer up to say that anyone who just posts numbers I will be editing your posts to add my own personal notes so I don't have to look back and forth when I add your votes to the spreadsheet. Just wanted to let people know so everything about this contest is transparent (if you ask nicely after this list is all said and done I could show you my spreadsheet so you can understand completely how I operate these lists and what totals each story recieved to explain why they ended up where they ranked).

  • Amazing fantasy #15 - 1962

This one is pretty much obligatory, everybody knows this story, but no writter has ever gone outside this story at all, the art, and the writting on this issue were above most of the stories at the time.

  • Amazing Spider-Man #248 - 1984 ("The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man")

This is not the first or the last tragic story in Spider-man (see Leah, or any other Spider-man character), but this one is really powerful, you wonder what is happening the whole issue, what motivated spider-man to do that? the end strikes really hard on any man.

  • Happy Birthday - (Story Arc) (Amazing Spider-Man #498-500)

This is one of the BEST stories written by JMS, great reading. Now GO AND READ IT!!! Like NOW!!!

  • The Final Chapter - (Story Arc) (Amazing Spider-Man #31-33)

One of the most consistent elements on Spider-man is his willpower, this is the first storyline that made us feel motivated by his will.

  • Ultimate Spider-Man: Venom - 2006 (Ultimate Spider-man #33-39)

Trying to pick the fifth storyline was difficult, I was about to give it to the Death of Spider-man, but I really like this one, for a writer that hates Venom, this was a really cool storyline, as a kid I really enjoyed reading these issues.

  • Coming Home (Amazing Spiderman 30 - 35)

The start of JMS reign on Amazing Spiderman, I can't see this on the list ? With out this we wouldn't have had an amazing, spectacular run by JMS, which got me fully integrated back into comics. Despite a lot of criticism the serious took (wolverine esc tusks) it all began here. The beautiful JRJR art and the setting of the greatest run in Spideys history (my opinion).

  • Spiderman Reign (Spiderman reign 1-4)

I can't see this up there either? Fantastic else world story that reeks of shades of the JMS era that could possibly come true. The ever antagonist to Web head, Jonah pulling a down n out ( he's pretty mental talking to dead people) inspiring him to pull back on those tights, with no planning could the return of Doc Oc be linked to our modern day Superior Spidey? Inadvertently still relative to todays story arc.

  • New Avengers - Break out (New Avengers 1-6)

Not a Spiderman title but I'll be dammed if this isn't a spiderman story. Visiting the Raft for his own reason ( Electros shock blast) and like the original Avengers, circumstance throws them into the mix which leads to major milestone events such as Civil war ( un masking of our hero) ,putting that aside it's an awesome book !

@jatoe48er: added

And these 3 stories, ladies and gentlemen, are why I do not want you to simply say "2-4-6-8-12" or whatever because that rank WILL change and you'll be voting for different stories since I am still allowing stories to be nominated

jatoe48er: thanks for writing reasons for those (will be very helpful in the future when I compile the top 100 list and the runner up list...whereever they end up). Now, all you need to do is vote (I would strongly suggest that you use at least some of your 5 to support those stories if you are unhappy with their placement right now because 80 onward there is a tie which could result in them being on the list or they could be placed on the runner up list. I make no guarantees, but my advice is to use your votes wisely)

@punyparker: like I said in the OP if there are any stories you think are missing don't hesitate to nominate them, but they MUST have 3+ sentences with them to be nominated and remember they don't have the same advantage as the other stories as they won't have any cosigns.

@battle_forum_junkie: snazy.

16 voters... so if we go consistently (and I doubt we will) with the number of voters participating over time, then say in a week we would get about a hundred voters, which is the amount we usually get for these lists. I'll need to start bugging people about voting, but it would be nice to have a general idea of next monday as our end date with the rest of next week as a time to get more people in case (or to break ties). We've done it before...

Any way, just talking out loud here. Might end the 11th or we might go onto the 18 but two weeks seems a little longer than I would want to deal with this list, so I'll shoot for the 11th...

I go 4 for Death of Spider-Man, the ultimate book. When I read it, I cried a little bit (even if I hate that they killed Pete).

Then put me 1 down for Back in Black.

I must say I love that some of you guys write reasons for the stories you are voting for. The nominators have to write reasons for the final product, but it's cool to see why you pick the stories you picked. I'm honestly going to have a hard time picking what I'm going to do with my 5 since a number of these are entertaining (probably since I'm host and have access to the spreadsheet I might cheat and use my 5 to break a few ties that exist :P )

Spider-Man: Blue: Such a touching and sweet story. I've always liked Gwen Stacy, and this just shows how much she meant to him, and how she changed Peter.

Spiderman Reign: a really good future story. It shows that even though Peter was old and retired, he would risk himself to save everyone else.

Avengers vs X-Men #9: It was amazing how Spidey took out two Phoenix Force Five members all by himself! It shows how clever he is.

Kraven's Last Hunt: An amazing story. It's such a neat concept, and the perfect ending to an awesome Spider-Man villain.

The Death of Gwen Stacy: The story that ended the Silver Age. The story that showed Spider-Man would never be safe from the death of his loved ones. The story that defied most other stories till then, where the girlfriend of the hero would always be saved by the hero. It showed how different Spider-Man was, where as most other heroes have loved ones that come back at some point, Spider-Man doesn't get the same luxury. Spider-Man has to suffer the guilt of losing a loved one, but still pull through to be the hero we love. The hero we can all relate to. This is what makes Spider-Man so special, being able to get past all of his personal problems to help anyone he can, no matter the cost to him.

I feel honored to be included in this voting, and am very glad to be invited to this. I hope everyone enjoys this voting, and we can all enjoy more stories of Spider-Man and friends for years, decades and even centuries to come!

@the_poet: thanks dude

ok, I'm going for all 5 votes Reign for reasons stated previously.

Anyone reading this , go read it again , it made sense then and makes sense now. Very very few books can do that even if you do it 52 times, you lose continuity . This book doesn't !!!!!!

@mucklefluga: Ultimate Comics Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis #1 - Volume One - 2012? Interesting to see what people vote for...

I have an offer if you don't/can't decide what you're going to do: what you could do is use 1 for 77 and then you could use the other 4 votes for tie breaking.

that's what I'm going to be doing with my votes. If this list is anything like the previous ones then there will be a number of significant ties which need to be broken (example: right now, ignoring the above votes, there is a tie 80 - 110 which will decrease in size with some of the votes people have had but that would be something that needs to be fixed at least for 80-100 otherwise the end will be alphabetized. I don't know if that's something you would want to do, but I thought I would throw that option out there. We'd have to alter the value of your 4 votes so you could vote for more than just a few but they wouldn't alter the list as much a regular final order...think about it

note for anyone: I'm only extending this offer to users who can not first use their votes for any of the stories who can't decide on specific stories or would like to participate but really can't. So, if you can name/pick your favorites from this list then I don't want you to be a tie breaker voter. I need you to express your opinions so this list reflects the community...
