Assemble at dawn 0

I'll preface this review by stating that I'm not normally an Avengers reader. That is, in the past, I've only read the Avengers titles during events, if only to get a feel for what was going on in the greater Marvel U. However, other Marvel NOW books have impressed me so much that I heeded the advice of many and decided to give Avengers a try. I believe this is also my first superhero Hickman title, as well. All that said, I absolutely loved Avengers #1. I think it's an excellent launch to a titl...

A classic X-Men crossover done completely right! 0

Overview. For me, the X-Men books are at their best when they're steeped in huge, overarching stories with big themes and big action. It's what I grew up on and it's what I get excited for when I pickup an X-book. Now, that said, I do not expect these type of stories all the time; rather, I prefer for them to be the culmination of a few years of slow-burn story. And this is exactly what Messiah CompleX is, and it does it so well.I recently reread Messiah CompleX in trade form--it's my third overa...

Talon hits the ground running... literally. 0

Talon #0 is about as good an introduction to a new character that I could imagine. In the sea of New 52 origin books that seem to be rehashes or bad reboots of characters' beginnings that we already know, Talon stands out as fresh and edgy (not edgy in the way that some books are labeled either; I mean legitimately edgy... in a cool way). The fact that this book spins out of Scott Snyder's uber-successful epic is not lost in this title; however Tynion and Snyder don't beat us over the head with i...

Not that strong a finish for a very strong story 2

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW!As much as I hate to say this, this ending fell kind of flat in my opinion. As others have stated, the fight was corny and stupidly out of the realm of possibility. That turbine would have sucked Bruce and Lincoln into as soon as they got remotely close, and having Lincoln flying around the skyline giving Bruce a good talking to was ridiculous. Worse yet was the actual diatribe--it was way too much. Lincoln telling his story the way he did was totally cliched and, f...

A stunning read 0

Issue 4 of BKV's space-epic is the best yet, and the other 3 were fantastic, so that's saying a hell of a lot. We finally get to see The Will (undoubtedly the most intriguing character in the Saga universe--the Boba Fett of the series, if you will) get a decent chunk of panel time, and it amazing in the way of character development. We get to peer into The Will's psyche, and BKV foregoes a long-winded narrative driven explanation of the character, instead opting to let Fiona Staples' nuanced art...

A very fun book 0

I've been loving everything Jeff Lemire has done with Frankenstein and S.H.A.D.E. since the very beginning, and so I went into reading this issue with a bit of trepidation because of the creative change. However, I was pleasantly surprised after reading, as Matt Kindt does an awesome job of keeping the book crazy, weird and so much fun. Lemire did this so well for 9 issues, so much so that Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. has become one of my favorite books to read every month, and to know that...

Fantastic, intriguing read. (spoiler free review) 0

The Massive #1 is a fantastic read through and through. If you're a fan of Brian Wood, then you'll recognize this book as distinctly his right away; and if you're not already a fan of his work, this book is a great example of what a talented creator he is.The story in the first issue is divided between the present (where we see the crew of the ship The Kapital in the Bering Sea) and some flashbacks of how the situation on Earth got the way it is in the present. In doing this, he takes the reader...

A Perfect Gotham City Tale 0

The WritingA Bridge to the Past is exactly the type of Batman story that makes me realize just how much I love Batman comics. The story is masterfully crafted -- a dark, contemporary detective story. What's really brilliant is the connection that Snyder and Higgins establish between the past and present. It's something that could have gone very wrong, but instead, they nailed it.Higgins is credited with the dialogue, and I must say, it's really what makes the script pop. The conversation between...
