@danslott: On all of it. The very idea that Ock is wearing a Spidey suit, let alone taking overPeter Parker's body is a slap in the face to any sensible Spiderman fan. This is just a nonsensicle story arc that will have little or no value down the road. Once Peter Parker returns all of this Superior Spiderman crap will find itself on the trash heap along side other ridiculous Spiderman obscenities like The Clone Saga and Ben Riley. It will be a hic up in the wider Spiderman history. It's just sad we had to take such a long detour before getting back to satisfying and enjoyable Spiderman stories. Going for the shock value is short sighted. It may be getting sales but Spidermans sales over the last decade have fallen drastically, it's not selling what it once did. Idiotic arcs like this don't help. I'll start buying Spidey again when Peter returns to reclaim MJ. I know I will have a long wait as long as Marvels current editorial board remains in place.

@danhimself: Regarding your post that Marvel has never rebooted.

How do you explain the erasure of 25 years of Spiderman history with the nightmare known as One More Day? How about the rebooting of Spidermans marriage to Mary Jane with One Moment in Time? Dont tell me that a retcon isn't the same as a reboot. Spidermans whole existence has been destroyed by Marvels convoluted story telling and "rebooting". Superior Spiderman is the ultimate humiliation.

@grey56: Regarding: it's a sad commentary on the state of Marvel comics.

I couldn't agree more. My disgust with Marvels current editorial board knows no bounds.

When will this nightmare end? I'm utterly amazed that this travesty of a story arc is still actually selling. I would love to start buying Spiderman again but Dan Slott has completely destroyed the allure. This story line concept is just more crap heaped upon a once great and iconic character. Peter Parker IS Spiderman. Please return this character back to his iconic status and stop the continued nonsense of the Superior Spiderman arc. Enough already!

Without killing i presume!

what is with the pre occupation of modern comic book heros and their inability to bring themselves to destroy evil?  I would love to see a return to the less cynical and morally relativistic approach to comics from the 1930's and 40's.  The fact that a hero may occasionally kill the bad guy, doesnt place the hero on the same level as the evil he eliminates. How did we emerge victorious in the second world war?  Its because "The greatest generation" wasnt conflicted about killing the enemy.  Killing Nazis did not make us like them.  It made the world safe from their evil designs for humanity.
The modern approach to fighting evil just leaves the current crop of super heros look ineffective and weak.  Case in point is the Joker. He does make for good stories, but he is one homicidal maniac who should have been eliminated long ago.
I love the current run of " the Shadow" over at Dynamite comics, its refreshing to see a hero who isnt conflicted with the disease of moral relativim, hes a crime fighter who is highly effective.

I completely agree. Im surprised anybody  is still buying this mess. If fans dont stop spending their money on this absurd nonsense they will continue to get hosed with more and more of it!  I dropped Spiderman back at Civil War. More of you fans should wake up to the fact that Marvels editorial board will continue its abusive beavior towards you as long as you keep buying these silly, absurd, sub standard story lines.
You people are like members of abusive relationships who keep going back for more beatings.  If Slott's Spiderman sales started tanking, you would see a very drastic change in the titles direction.  QUIT BUYING THIS CRAP!

After reading the first two issues of SSM, it's becoming obvious (for me, anyway) what direction this story will be heading in. Octopeter is heading for a gradual transformation where he slowly becomes a "good" person. In issue no. 1 it was his hesitation to kill someone. In issue no. 2 it was his understanding of the relationship Peter and MJ and, subsequently, not acting on impulse to get it on with her. I think these realizations will continue to take place over the next several issues, until he slowly transforms into a good person and likeable character. At this point, the arc will culminate with his ultimate redemption, in which Octopeter gives the real Peter his body back and Doc Ock goes once and for all into the ether, never to be heard from again.

The circumstances as to how this actually transpires is anyone's guess - but I do think this is how all this will eventually pan out.

Thoughts? Is this theory plausible? Has anyone else already thought of this possibility?

Hope you are right!

I still think the purpose of this arc is to return Peter to his original status as a down on his luck loner with no entangling female relationships. The deal with MJ in the current instalment pretty much puts the nail in the coffin of the Peter/MJ relationship, even when Peter returns. If MJ cant accept Peter as Spiderman there is no future for them together. I think Ock just drove that point home to both MJ and Ghost Peter. I believe that those who are waiting for a Peter/MJ reunion at the end of this story line are setting themselves up for further disapointment.

I believe this story arc will be the way Marvel wipes out 50 years of character development and reboots the franchise for the next 50 years. When its done, Peter will have to repair old friendships, find a new job, forget about being in the Avengers, and work on developing relationships with females other than M.J., none of which will be longterm or emotionally fulfilling. This is the direction Marvels editorial board has said it wants the spiderman character to go. Back to his original roots. So far, I think Im right on target.
