RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 42 0

General Fortean is out hunting Rulk again and it is not surprising that Ross is finally losing his patience with him.   At any time the Red Hulk can put Fortean out of commission permanently, yet he still pulls his punches, out of compassion for the obsessed General that so mirrors his formal self.   Yet, that compassion is slipping because his former comrade doesn't let up.   Then, suddenly, General Fortean lets up.   He not only backs off... he retreats.   Rulk ponders "he's not one to retreat...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 6 0

It was the legendary Albert Einstein who coined the phrase that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.   Yet it's apparent that in writer Jeph Loeb's universe, this principal does not exist... maybe a display of temporary insanity on Loeb's part while drafting "Blood Red" HULK Issue #6.   Unfortunately, Rulk’s first story-arc "Red Hulk" ends on a weaker note because of it. What started out strong as a classic “whodunit” tale and ...

ESSENTIAL RULK : Review of HULK Issue # 41 0

HULK Issue 41 "Omegex 3: Finality" marks the last issue of artist Gabriel Hardman's run as the penciler on this series.   While he’s incredibly gifted with a classic pulpy style, my relationship with Hardman’s work has been strained at best, specifically when it comes to his incarnation of the Red Hulk.   Drawing him with a stocky, swollen looking frame with a face often greatly lacking in detail, Hardman's Rulk often looked like one of those giant helium balloons you'd find in a Thanksgiving Da...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 5 0

"Thor.   I heard you were dead."   - Rulk "I heard you were green.   Monster.   It matters little... ...since by morning's light, THOU WILT BE DEAD!" - Thor "Yeah. About that.   You're welcome to give it a whirl... .. but it's going to be a LONG night." – Rulk  Simply bad ass.   When Thor returns from his long absence from Earth expecting to confront a World War Green Hulk, he instead steps up as the next Red Hulk challenger in HULK Issue #5 "Rolling Thunder".   While so many in the Marvel Unive...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 40 0

In HULK Issue #40 "Omegex: Part Two", writer Jeff Parker spins an unexpectedly interesting tale.   The battle between the two incredible titans Red Hulk and Omegex trumpeted on the cover are never in the forefront, but daringly become the backdrop to something a hundred times more subtle.   All the focus rests on the Red Hulk's enemy Zero-One and her struggle with her own identity, hinged on finding the answer to a single question that has eluded her purely logical mind:   Was her humanity worth...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 4 0

Once again, it's the amazing art of Ed McGuinness that reigns supreme in HULK Issue #4 "Red Light, Green Light" as the Red Hulk and the Green finally go mano-a-mano in a no holds barred battle to truly prove which Hulk is the strongest one there is. Of course, the first ever confrontation between these two titans has various widespread implications in the Marvel universe, so much so that it has come to the attention of Uato the Watcher to observe.   BIG MISTAKE.   In a controversial move, Red Hu...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 39 0

In HULK Issue #39 "The Stand-In", General Thaddeus Ross revisits his past... and shows a side of humanity rarely seen by the man as rigid as the military code of conduct he has so long lived by. It's all spurred on by the need of finding a new safe base camp, one that his growing arsenal of enemies (M.O.D.O.K., General Fortean, Zero-One, Black Fog) are completely unaware of.   The Red Hulk's answer to that need is finding refuge in his childhood home, a now rundown and abandoned farm.   As one ...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 38 0

Manhattan is going down.   As waves of Sin's invasion army push through the city leaving complete utter devastation in its wake, the massive forces of evil drive forward to finish what the Worthy Thing has started.   The Red Hulk failed to stop them... the Avengers Tower has been destroyed... and it's estimated that the city will fall in 2.3 hours.   Then all of it will be gone.   All of it. "No. It. Will... NOT!!!!" M.O.D.O.K screams as he stands his ground and creates a frontline!   "All Life ...

RULK REVIEW : AVENGERS Issue # 9 0

"So... gentlemen" the Red Hulk inquires, staring down the former members of the covert (now defunct) think-tank The Illuminati, who years ago tasked themselves protectors of the all powerful Infinity Gems. "Where are they?" In AVENGERS Issue #9, never has Charles Xavier, Reed Richards, Dr. Strange and Tony Stark appeared so uncertain to answer a simple question.  Taking such a trusting leap of faith in the Red Hulk and Steve Roger's belief that this once declared enemy of the state has now been ...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 3 0

Every artist has a portfolio, a collection of art that defines its creator. That body of work highlights the illustrator's talents and always features the best artwork he or she has ever done. Undoubtedly, in the massive portfolio of Ed McGuinness, we would find HULK Issue #3. It's that good. Now when we last left the Red Hulk, everything to this point had presented the crimson menace as a terrifying monster. Uncaring and unfeeling, the Rulk was an unrelenting beast that lurked in the shadows u...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 37 0

Cross-over tie-ins have one ultimate purpose: to boost sales. Marvel creates universe event after universe event in an effort to encourage readers to buy comic titles that they wouldn't usually purchase, in order to grasp the entire, often cataclysmic unfolding story. With any luck, a new reader will find the added title so interesting that they will continue to pick up the book, long after the cross-over event has ended. You'll be hard pressed to find a comic more blatantly obvious in serving t...

RULK REVIEW : AVENGERS Issue # 8 0

When we last left the AVENGERS, a badly beaten Red Hulk awkwardly crashed through a window of the Avengers Tower to warn the Earth's Mightiest of a new, grave threat. Someone evil has obtained two of the all-powerful infinity gems and did the improbable: Single handedly obliterated the Rulk. In Issue #8, this revelation is especially alarming to Tony Stark because he, Reed Richards, Dr. Strange and the rest of the now disbanded secret organization called "The Illuminati" was each charged with h...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 36 0

Ross is dreaming about death.   Calling them bad dreams is an understatement… but these nightmares have been feeling so real that they appear like premonitions... so the Rulk is compelled to investigate.   What the Red Hulk and his life model decoy Annie find is he has actually been viewing killings through the eyes of the evil entity Zzzax... becoming an unwilling spectator to the people the electrifying villain lays to waste.   But why? After a side-step with the poorly concluded Planet Red H...

RULK REVIEW : Avengers Issue # 7 0

''In... finity'' That is the Rulk's final word in AVENGERS issue #7, after crashing a superhero party literally when he smashes through an Avengers Tower window, landing at the feet of the Earth's mightiest.   Referring to the all-powerful infinity gems, the Red Hulk had just gotten his ass handed to him by a man who now possessed two of them, just a few minutes before his rough entrance. This appearance of the Red Hulk caps off the beginning of an interesting, new story arc of this fledging you...

ESSENTIAL RULK : Review of HULK Issue # 2 0

"THE @#$%ING HULK IS HERE!" the She-Hulk horrifyingly screams as her body is violently ripped from a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier command center by a fearsome pair of oversized red atomic hands.   "JEN!" Tony Stark calls!   "DAMMIT!   How did he get in here??   And am I the only one to see RED HANDS NOT GREEN??" Making up for only a cover appearance in the first issue of the HULK, the Red Hulk appears early, exploding onto the second page of Issue #2 "The Smoking Gun" like a volcanic eruption t...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 35 0

Payback is a bitch. And a consequence to the Red Hulk's power drunk, arrogant rampage in the early issues of the HULK series is beginning to rear its ugly head. The bad karma catching up to him may be delayed a bit.... but make no mistake.... it's coming.  With continuity in mind, writer Jeff Parker has taken an old, quick, comedic, throwaway moment of the Red Hulk punching out Uatu The Watcher (which made many readers cringe back in the early issues of 2008) and turned it into a very interestin...

ESSENTIAL RULK : Review of HULK Issue # 1 1

‘’If you hadn’t acted so irrationally we wouldn’t be in this situation” – General Ross “Don’t be ridiculous Ross.   This isn’t about me.   This is about you General.” – Doc Samson   No one knew how telling those words would be, when HULK Issue #1 hit comic stands across the world with a mysterious, daunting, new symbol of unbridled power and rage on its cover:    A roaring, fiendish, electric devil of a beast, fearsome and magnificent to behold.   It was a different Hulk.   It was a new Hulk.  ...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 34 0

''Planet Hulk'' is one of the best, if not the greatest, Hulk stories of all time.   So you can understand one's trepidation when beginning to read HULK Issue #34 ''Planet Red Hulk Part One'' that this comic will be a rehashed, bore of a story that is cashing in on the success of the Planet Hulk name.   Fortunately, with great relief and delight, only the latter stood correct.  When a distress signal is received from a pair of Russian cosmonauts orbiting in a shuttle around Earth, Steve Rogers k...

RULK REVIEW : HULK Issue # 30 (4 Stars) 0

''Can't think... head's all full of nerd...'' - Rulk That is just one of many great lines that can be found in the thoroughly enjoyable 30th issue of HULK ''Marvel Two in One'', where Thaddeus Ross and Bruce Banner are forced to confront their worst nightmare: work together in the most intimate of ways. Both Hulks are literally ''smashed'' together in order to fight an intergalactic titan that has a personal vendetta against the Green Hulk whom he lost to in battle before. Needless to say ...

ESSENTIAL RULK : Review of HULK Issue # 23 0

As a young man, Thaddeus E. Ross was involved in a plane crash that nearly took his life.  Doctors said he'd never recover.  Doctors said he'd never walk again.  But with sheer will and determination he proved all the experts wrong. Thaddeus Ross rehabilitated himself to perfect health and subsequently lost all respect for anyone who referred to themselves as ''doctor''.  Enter Doctor Bruce Banner.  So begins General Ross's recollection of key moments in his life which led him to this pivotal po...
