The New Defenders

I feel that Marvel needs to explore its magic universe a lot more. Not only does Marvel have awesome magic characters, but a largely unused background for the magic that occurs. Anyway, this team would work best to explore the universe's use of magic and prevent the misuse of magic. This kind of team would constantly be traveling around the world and between different realms and dimensions. I feel that the goal of this team would be very similar to the New Avengers, but the roster would be a lot more specialized to dealing with mystical threats. Just as a note, I would like to add Thor, Moon Knight and Spider-Man to the team but I think those guys are seeing enough team action. Thor might guest star for some journeys to the Asgardian realm (or what is left of it). I think Moon Knight's connection to a Egyptian God would be great for the team. Spider-Man would be good if he pursues knowledge of his Totemic role on Earth.

List items

  • The Leader of the Team

Dr. Strange has to be the center of any team that has to deal with magic. I think if this were an actual Marvel book, the story would center around his journey to find important magical artifacts and reclaim his title of Sorcerer Supreme

  • Field Leader

I don't know why, but I have always been partial to the Black Knight. He is such a cool character and he is not used at all. His martial skills combined with his ties to the magical world are great aspects for leader during missions.

  • Being one of the original Defenders should earn him a part in the team. I think that exploring magic and its relation to Atlantis and its artifacts would be really interesting. He may even discover his role as part of a team that he can't get from the X-Men.

  • Danny may not seem like a good candidate for this team but he has served well on every team he has been on. Also, his ties to K'un-Lun would prove useful for team training. We might find the team journeying to the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven.

  • Yet again another unlikely candidate. Black Panther would be an interesting addition to the team. His role is that of a totemic warrior priest that serves the Panther God. That description alone should convince anyone of having him on the team.

  • Having come out of demon possession (spoiler) I think Matt might be looking for some purification. Also, I think his insight as a religious man would add some interesting conversations on the team about magic and its role in the universe.
