There is a new mandate that no new mutants can be created in an X-Men series. Unless they are introduced in a book like Avengers or Spiderman. Since Marvel is self sabotaging the X-Men franchise since the movie rights are owned by Fox. They essentially do not want to promote Mutants or X-Men, or give Fox any new characters to use. So we wont be getting any new students for some time.
I haven't kept up with all the books recently, but I have to agree, WatX didn't jive with me the way New X-Men did. I really enjoyed that cast of characters, and to me it achieved it's goal. Which was to bring back a student/school centric book (like New Mutants was in the 80s). After all it was originally titled New Mutants. I'm not at all interested in any of the newer students, Shark-Girl, Eye-Boy, Gold-Balls, Triage etc (or the five lights).
I don't know what the world is going to look like after Secret Wars, but I wouldn't be upset if somehow all these newer mutants disappear. And for whatever reason, they decide to make another 'Young Mutant' book, I hope they revisit the ones that actually worked (in my opinion). Hellion, Surge, Rockslide, Dust, Anole, Mercury. Perhaps put a few of them on a team with the original New Mutants.
