Great interview! Nicke Lowe has my dream job - not only an editor, but editing X-MEN. And, he seems like he's a normal fan that understands why we love the characters.

@Edamame: Where have you seen info about the 2nd Coming TPB? I know the Hardover is scheduled for 10/13 and the X-Factor book is scheduled,  but I haven't seen any sign of the crossover paperback.

I'm not super-optimistic about a quick release - from Amazon it looks like the Messiah Complex TPB lagged several months behind the HC.

(FYI, I've spent two months compiling the ultimate guide to X-TPBs, I'll share with ComicVine soon ;)

I have seen the X-Men 90´s animated series and there was an adaptation of the Dark Phoenix Saga.  Is there anything that I missed in the actual trade paper back?  In other words, do I need to buy the Dark Phoenix Saga trade paper back, if I have seen the X-Men 90´s animated series adaptation of the Dark Phoenix Saga story arc? "

The animated series did an awesome job of it, but the TPB just has more texture to the story. If I get someone's attention long enough to have them read four comic books I invariably have them read the final four in the Dark Phoenix TPB.

--

1. Dark Phoenix.
- It's the gold standard of a Marvel single-book story arc.

2. Age of Apocalypse
- Marvel tried to recapture this magic with House of M, but AoA was steeped in so much pervasive internal continuity that it still sparks the imagination. Nothing about it was arbitrary. I still find myself wondering about some of the smaller hints they dropped.

3. Second Coming
To be fair, I haven't read this in its entirety yet and probably won't until the TPB comes out. It's definitely on par with Dark Phoenix in scope and groundwork being laid for years and years. It just comes on the heels of too many other events. Maybe I'll enjoy it more in retrospect.

I think it would be a strong resolution for Emma's character arc if she came full circle to be White Queen of good instead of evil. She's nearly there already, but for her to be in charge sans Scott in the picture would complete the transformation.

Storm would be interesting as headmistress rather than a field leader, seeing as her philosophy has changed a bit in recent years. I could see Shadowcat being headmistress at some later point, but the writers all like her too much in this era to box her into that. Otherwise, Magneto as leader has been done and done again, Beast has a better arc going with the SWORD/Brand stuff, Wolvie is wasted as a leader, Cable is dead.

What about someone from the post-Rogue generation, #180-225? I suppose that only consists of Psylocke and Dazzler, at this point?

I think this is a great idea, but if Marvel is smart they won't restrict it to theatres. Doing brief comic-book sized episodes of some of the b-tier characters on social networks would be a great, low-cost way to test the waters.

They should take a look at the Muppet's campaign from the past year - some of them flew under the radar, but some (like the "Bohemiam Rhapsody" took off hugely).

I do agree that masked heroes would be best for this endeavor, as the chance that they'd use the same actor from a brief feature to carry a tentpole movie are slim.

(PS: Dazzler is one of my favorites, but the movie would never work unless they had an amazing soundtrack, and Gaga is too expensive for them now ;)

Babs is an awesome Domino; I would gladly watch the whole series Preview-Theatre-style ;)

I don't know that the multiple titles is such a bad thing - you can always skip one or two, aside from crossovers, and with Batman they tend to have their own flavor.

The real disservice is the continuity issues it creates for casual fans who are just trying to follow the story. DC used to do a pretty good job on the Superman titles of explaining where they came in order relative to each other, but (especially for Marvel) it's just a muddle.

I have always felt that Rachel only had a distinct voice when Alan Davis was involved, even only as the artist. He seemed to have a sympathy for her that cut through Claremont's love of using her as a Jean Grey replacement.

That's not to say she's dissimilar to Jean - Claremont/Davis at their best play her like a bolder, brasher young Jean Grey - powerful, but prone to getting in over her head, and worshipful of the 1st and 2nd generation of X-Men.  I feel like it's believable that she doesn't ever truly gain control over her powers because of all the intense trauma of her youth.

She's one of my favorite characters, so I was just about to chase down the space epic stuff to read more of her. Xerox, would you say it's not worth the time/money, since tonally her character is so off?

Also, do you feel her exile from core X-books is an editorial decision connected to do with her marked similarity to Hope Summers in look, name, time-travel, etc?
