My Favorite Characters from DC Comics

List items

  • Yup...

  • A pretty obvious choice, but you can't deny she's great. She was not the first superheroine and there have been many since, but the reason Diana's survived while others have faded is because she's the best. I particularly love the William Moulton Marston material where she is a strong, compassionate social crusader. Under Greg Rucka she was a total badass. Even when things got weird with Brian Azzarello, she rolled with the punches. DC, get her goddamn movie right!

  • Peter Milligan's version of Rac Shade is still one of my all-time favorite comic book characters. He was pretty much a hipster going through different phases of life and changing perspective with each incarnation. Coming from a society that valued conformity above all else, Shade was unique and sensitive. He wasn't always perfect but his intentions were good, and he did the best that he could for his friends and family. He was cutting edge for his time and I can't think of another character quite like him.

  • Kay Challis is a character who is, at the same time, very tragic and incredibly uplifting. Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol is basically about her struggling with the abuses she suffered in the past and with the multiple personality disorder that developed in the wake of those traumas. She's an artist and the best of her comes out through her own creativity. She defends herself from a world that wants to fix her rather than understand her by retreating into surreal adventures with her superhero friends. Come in out of the rain, Jane...

  • He is a sentient, transvestite street. What more could you want? Honestly, this is such a unique idea for a character, and it's the kind of imagination I like to see in comics. I love Danny's supportive personality, the way he communicates through street signs, and how he's a piece of a better world where everyone is happy. I really hope he makes a comeback.

  • Here's the truth, I don't know if I really like Buddy Baker so much as I like the stories around him. I mean, there's not much to the guy other than the fact that he's a dedicated family man and a conflicted animal rights activist. His comics are always interesting, though. There's Morrison's meta stories, Jamie Delano's hippie epic, and, recently, Jeff Lemire's celebrated run that keep Baker weird and interesting despite himself.

  • I grew up with Tim Drake as Robin, and I always related with him really well. He's intelligent and driven like Batman, but cares about his friends in a way that is really difficult for Bruce. Even though I'm old now and he's somehow still in his late-teens, I have fond memories of reading him in Batman and Young Justice growing up. I'll always back you, Timmy.
