DC New 52 - Month 7

Week 1

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Action Comics, Animal Man, Batwing

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Justice League International, Red Lanterns, Swamp Thing

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Green Arrow

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Stormwatch

Top Pick: Batwing

FINALLY! We find out the terrible secret the Kingdom has been hiding. Next issue, we get to find out the identity of the bad guy. They have been hinting that it is the general who Batwing served as a child, but I think its pretty obvious who it really is... Still, this issue does a good job of wrapping up the first plotline and getting us ready for the epic finale next week.

Bottom Pick: Stormwatch

Stormwatch is a hard title to get right, or at least a hard one to get me interested in. Too often it veers towards theoretical science and just saying a bunch of smart sounding words together and hoping we will be impressed. It's the same argument I had with Mr. Terrific essentially. I was intrigued by the traitor on the team, new characters and other elements of Cornell's run, but this issue doesn't quite stand up to the standard he set.

Week 2

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Batman and Robin, Legion Lost, Resurrection Man, Suicide Squad

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Batwoman, Deathstroke, Demon Knights, Green Lantern, The Ray, The Shade, Superboy

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Batgirl

Top Pick: Legion Lost

Suicide Squad was (of course) awesome this week, but I'm picking Legion Lost for another reason. Often when a title you like gets another writer, you're worried it won't be as good. This issue laid my fears to rest and got me excited for a new direction for this book!

Bottom Pick: Batgirl

It's okay, but not enough to keep my interest week to week. Barbara is not the same smart, confident character that many of us know. She has essentially been turned into another straightforward super-hero book without anything unique except for the fact she has post-traumatic stress from her former paralysis.

Week 3

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Batman, Blue Beetle, Nightwing, Wonder Woman

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Birds of Prey, Catwoman, Green Lantern Corps, Justice League, Supergirl, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents

Top Pick: Wonder Woman

I didn't like this book at all at the beginning, but now I'm getting into it a little more. This issues introduces a couple more gods: Eros (Cupid) and Hephaestus (Vulcan), reveals a dark secret about the amazons and leads up to Wonder Woman's descent into Hell next issue.

Bottom Pick: T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents

Not a bad issue, I just didn't like some of the plot twists. SPOILER: many characters who have died are brought back and then my favorite character is killed off. I'll wait until the next issue to judge the miniseries as a whole...

Week 4

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Aquaman, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Justice League Dark

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Batman: The Dark Knight, Flash, Legion: Secret Origin, Superman

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Teen Titans

Top Pick: Green Lantern: New Guardians

This series has been building slowly (almost too slowly), but it finally pays off with this issue! There are a lot of reveals including who stole the rings and why, the backstory of Invictus and his relationship with Larfleeze and the story behind the fake solar system. In addition to giving us all this information, we finally start to see the team acting like a team. I'm looking forward to seeing how the series progresses from here.

Bottom Pick: Teen Titans

What should have been an epic conclusion to a story arc was mediocre in my opinion. I'm thinking of dropping this title, but I have to at least stick around for "The Culling" and crossovers with Legion Lost...

Other Thoughts: Superman got another try out because of the new creative team. It looks like it might be a little better than the last six issues were, so I'm adding it back to the list.

Vampires and Werewolves... in a zombie apocalypse

I was reading a Vertigo preview of a new series coming out by Dan Abnett called "the New Deadwardians". Essentially, its about vampires during a zombie apocalypse (there's more to it than that, but I'll let you go discover it for yourself). It got me thinking about the important things in life: specifically, who would have the advantage in a zombie apocalypse between vampires and werewolves?

The cop-out answer is: it depends. There have been so many different versions of the mythology that governs vampires and werewolves that its hard to pick a clear winner. It depends on their weaknesses, strengths and the other rules of their species. Hobbling together rules from a bunch of different sources (Buffy, Walking Dead, etc.), this is what the breakdown looks like:

Vampires

Advantages

  • Will not be attacked and can't be turned into a zombie
  • Long life
  • Super-strength?
  • Do not require sleep

Disadvantages

  • Only sustained by living (non-zombie) flesh
  • Powers weakened by feeding on smaller animals
  • Cannot move freely in daylight
  • Killed by sunlight, wooden stakes, decapitation
  • Injured by churches, crosses, holy things
  • Can't enter human living quarters without permission

Werewolves

Advantages

  • Longer life?
  • (As werewolf) Super-strength
  • (As werewolf) Thick hide provides added protection
  • Will be attacked, but can't be turned into zombie in werewolf form (assumption: no zombie animals)
  • Can eat living or non-living flesh (does that include zombies?)
  • (As humans) Can move freely in daylight

Disadvantages

  • Will be attacked and can be turned into a zombie in human form
  • Need to sleep like regular human
  • Killed by silver bullet, decapitation or removal of heart
  • Only a werewolf 3 nights a month?

Humans

Advantages

  • Can eat pretty much whatever they want
  • Can move freely in daylight and churches

Disadvantages

  • Can be turned into a zombie, vampire or werewolf
  • Limited lifespan
  • Require sleep
  • Easily injured
  • Relatively weak compared to vampires and werewolves

DC New 52 - Month 6

Week 1

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Action Comics, Animal Man, Batwing, Swamp Thing

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Green Arrow, Justice League International, Red Lanterns, Stormwatch

Top Pick: Animal Man

This issue is essentially filler, but is enjoyable enough that you don't really notice. Rather than giving us an issue of everyone standing around talking about what happened last week with a few hints about what's about to happen next week (see JLI or Stormwatch this week to see what I mean), we get to watch some of Buddy Baker's film career. Buddy Baker has been a stuntman for a long time, but this is the first time I can remember actually seeing him act in something. The film itself is about an aging, down an out superhero which seems to have a lot of parallels to Buddy's own life.

Bottom Pick: Stormwatch

As I mentioned above, this issue is essentially filler between the battle with the traitor on the team last issue and the alien invasion that seems to be on the horizon next issue. Much like JLI this week, this issue is all about bringing the team together: a leader is chosen, Apollo and Midnighter finally join and the ship is (somewhat) brought into line. I gave it a "good" rating, so I really don't have much to complain about this week, it was just a little slower than usual.

Week 2

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Batman and Robin, Resurrection Man, Suicide Squad

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Batwoman, Demon Knights, Green Lantern, Legion Lost, Superboy

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Batgirl, Deathstroke, Penguin

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Grifter

Top Pick: Batman and Robin

Lots of good stuff happening in this issue. Batman finishes his backflash about his time training under Ducard and his son Morgan. Meanwhile, Damian has to make his final decision between Batman's "no kill" law and freedom under Morgan.

Bottom Pick: Grifter

I didn't think this issue was particularly bad, I just forgot who all the characters were since the last issue and had a hard time following the plot.. I'll wait until its a trade so I can read the whole thing at once and maybe understand what's going on a little better.

Week 3

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Birds of Prey, Blue Beetle, Justice League

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Batman, Catwoman, Nightwing, Supergirl, Wonder Woman

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Green Lantern Corps

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Captain Atom, DC Universe Presents, Legion of Super-Heroes

Top Pick: Birds of Prey

I like how this issue starts from the point of view of one of Choke's mind-controlled henchmen. It slowly introduces us to the team and the storyline from an outsider's point of view. In the second half, the team formulates a plan to draw Choke into the open, but end up in a trap themselves! It seems to be leading up to an exciting conclusion to the first storyline.

Bottom Pick: Captain Atom

I've been mostly disappointed with this series. I think I held onto it so long because I was hoping for something more like the original Captain Atom series. I don't really like the artwork of this series, don't really understand the random ticking clock and don't really feel like sticking around to see where its going...

Weeks 4 and 5

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Aquaman, Flash, Ray, Shade, THUNDER Agents

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Justice League Dark, Legion: Secret Origin

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Batman: The Dark Knight, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Teen Titans

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: All-Star Western, Voodoo

Top Pick: Aquaman

This issue is mostly character-driven and focuses on Mera. Mera's a character who always seems to be around in Aquaman titles, but doesn't really have much depth. I like how Geoff Johns had added a little background and personality character through Blackest Night, Brightest Day and now this series. It's filler issue before the "Who Sank Atlantis" storyline, but still a very entertaining read.

Bottom Pick: Voodoo

I don't like the direction this book has taken since Ron Marz's departure. It was cool when it was a fugitive, cat and mouse book. Now it seems to be more of a secret alien invasion book, along the same lines as Grifter. Not really a fan.

DC New 52 - Month 5

Week 1

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Animal Man, Justice League International, Red Lanterns, Swamp Thing

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Action Comics, Batwing, Green Arrow, Penguin, Stormwatch

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Huntress

Top Pick: Animal Man & Swamp Thing

A lot of action going on in both titles this month. Buddy fights to save his family, only to have his daughter unleash all sorts of zombie monsters at the end. Meanwhile, Alec finally learns how to channel his plant powers without turning entirely into Swamp Thing and has a knock-down, drag-out with his girlfriends evil brother. The two books are moving closer together and a crossover is on the way!

Bottom Pick: Huntress

Starting to get bored with this one. I would have preferred a miniseries with less issues, but a faster-moving, more concise storyline. I'll pick it up when it comes out as a trade.

Week 2

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Green Lantern, Ray, Resurrection Man, Suicide Squad

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Batgirl, Batman and Robin, Demon Knights, Legion Lost, Shade

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Batwoman, Deathstroke, Grifter, Superboy

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: My Greatest Adventure

Top Pick: Resurrection Man

This issue reveals the origin of Resurrection Man, and it is very different than what we saw in the first series. The origins of Hooker and the Body Doubles are also hinted at in this issue, as well as future plotlines. All-in-all a good issue that shows that Abnett and Lanning still have stories to tell about the character they created, and they are not just rehashing what they have already done.

Bottom Pick: Grifter

I didn't think this issue was particularly bad, I just forgot who all the characters were since the last issue and had a hard time following the plot!

Week 3

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Birds of Prey, Blue Beetle, Catwoman, DC Universe Presents

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Batman, Captain Atom, Nightwing, Supergirl, Wonder Woman

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Legion of Super-Heroes, Green Lantern Corps, THUNDER Agents

Top Pick: DC Universe Presents and Blue Beetle

I didn't have a strong feeling about my favorite book this week, so I decided to split the top spot. I didn't really understand the whole "looking for a new question of existence" plot, but I liked this issue of DCU Presents because it was a good wrap-up of the Deadman feature. Deadman got to accomplish his goal and come away with more appreciation of his power, so that's all good. Blue Beetle has also been good recently. I don't like some of the changes to characters from the original series, but I guess it's a good thing that the writer is going in his own direction with the character. I liked this week's issue about the same as Catwoman and BoP, but I picked Beetle because I was actually suprised/excited at the end of the issue and wanted to see what happens next week.

Bottom Pick: Legion of Super-Heroes

If ever there was a filler issue in the long, proud history of comic books, this is it. Each 1-2 pages focuses on a different Legionnaire and the result is that absolutely nothing exciting happens this issue. All the evidence needed is found on the cover, it depicts three "exciting things" that turn out to be mundane tasks the Legionnaires are doing in their free time. Ultra Boy "pushed to the limit" is just testing out some new weapon on a target in a training room. Glorith "turning her back on the Legion" is just her sitting in her room meditating before she decides to go downstairs for some lunch. Chameleon Boy "and the Science Police" is one page where the SP are like "hey Chameleon Boy, let's chat about your last mission".

Week 4

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Aquaman, Flash, Justice League

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Justice League Dark

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: All-Star Western, Batman: The Dark Knight, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Legion: Secret Origin, Teen Titans, Voodoo

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Savage Hawkman

Top Pick: Aquaman

This is a good transition issue between the Trench storyline and the Who Sank Atlantis storyline. It switches back and forth between Aquaman stuck in a desert miles from any water and the story of how he got there. At the end, Aquaman makes a revelation about how Atlantis sank that will doubtless set him on some sort of quest in the next couple issues. There are also a couple fun facts we learn this issue (e.g. Aquaman has super hearing, the "A" on Aquaman's belt stands for Atlantis)

Bottom Pick: Savage Hawkman

I'm dropping this book because it's not holding my interest very well. We haven't learned too much about the character at this point and don't care a lot about what happens to him. The supporting cast is boring and interchangeable. The threats all seem to be some sort of amorphous, shape-shifting monsters that aren't too interesting. I'm also not a big fan of the artwork. Maybe I'll check it out under a new creative team, but will likely just let this one go.

DC New 52 - Month 4

Week 1

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Action Comics, Batwing, Huntress, Red Lanterns

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Animal Man, Green Arrow, Justice League International, Penguin, Swamp Thing

Okay - Not the best, but will give it another chance next week: Stormwatch

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Detective Comics

Top Pick: Batwing

I picked Batwing this month because I liked the fact that they gave us David's back story. Revealed as a child soldier in an evil man's army, we can see that there are many paths to becoming a Batman. Where Bruce Wayne is out for revenge/justice, it seems that David is more about redemption. Of course, he's not doing a very good job protecting the former members of "The Kingdom", but I guess we'll let that slide. It also seems that they are setting up Massacre to be David's supposedly dead brother Isaac. A pretty obvious plot twist, but cool nonetheless.

Bottom Pick: Detective Comics

While I didn't find the story terrible, I just figure with ten other Bat-books out there plus appearances in Justice League and JLI, I can afford to drop some of the more mediocre ones. I wasn't a big fan of Tony Daniel's work in "Batman" and this series hasn't been much different, so I think I'll drop this book until a new creative team comes on board (hopefully soon...)

Random Thoughts:

Giffen and Jurgens did a good job on Green Arrow.. hopefully the next creator change for this book will help it even more. Whatever happened to Maxwell Lord - will we ever see him in JLI? Was that Twilight that made an appearance at the end of Stormwatch? If so, I'm excited!

Week 2

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Green Lantern, Ray, Resurrection Man, Suicide Squad

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Batgirl, Batman and Robin, Batwoman, Demon Knights, Grifter, Legion Lost, My Greatest Adventure, Superboy

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Deathstroke, Shade

Top Pick: Suicide Squad

A lot going on this week. First, Captain Boomerang takes the lead in a mission against a snake-themed bad guy group. On DC's website, they are called "Kobra", the long-standing DC group, but in the comic they appear to be called Basilisk, a little confusing. Anyway, as the solicit states there is a betrayal and a member of the Squad "falls" (not necessarily dies). I didn't see the twist coming in this issue and enjoyed it thoroughly. Next, after learning of Joker's recent troubles in Detective Comics, Harley apparently starts a metahuman prison riot that the Squad is tasked with ending in 18 minutes before their heads explode. All-in-all an exciting issue which sets up the next three Harley-centric issues, can't wait!

Bottom Pick: Shade

I still like this book, but this issue was a little dull. It is essentially Shade talking and dreaming against his enemies the whole time. The last page is a semi-cliffhanger that makes me hope next issue will be more interesting.

Random Thoughts: Will Jimmy Palmiotti explain what happened to the first two Rays he was writing about in Freedom Fighters? Hooker's back in Resurrection Man - I'm excited! Is the "terrorist" group Fairchild is in Gen13? If so, are there now 13 members?

Week 3

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Blue Beetle, Justice League, Supergirl, THUNDER Agents

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Batman, Batman Incorporated: Leviathan Strikes, Birds of Prey, Catwoman, Nightwing, Wonder Woman

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Captain Atom, DC Universe Presents, Green Lantern Corps, Legion of Super-Heroes

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Red Hood and the Outlaws

Top Pick: Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle is a book I've been on the fence about in the New 52. I really liked the first series with Jaime, especially his interactions with supporting characters like his parents, Paco and Brenda. Having almost everyone know his secret was also somewhat refreshing. In the new series, the characterization of Paco in particular has changed dramatically and I am having a hard time getting used to it. This issue convinced me that the book has potential. I particularly like the struggle between Jaime and the scarab, which is being handled well so far.

Bottom Pick: Red Hood and the Outlaws

Red Hood is another book I've been on the fence about, but decided to go the other way and drop this one. I don't think its a bad book, I'm just having a hard time getting invested in the plot, or caring about the characters. Maybe I would pick this one back up under a different writer...

Week 4

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Aquaman

Good - Solid book, want to read next week: All-Star Western, Flash, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Justice League Dark, Voodoo

Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Batman: Dark Knight, Legion: Secret Origin, Savage Hawkman, Teen Titans

Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Superman

Top Pick: Aquaman

This issue wraps up the "Trench" storyline pretty well and also brings the "Aquaman is nobody's favorite superhero" bit full-circle. It also teases the next story, what sank Atlantis? I'm not sure if we should expect to see the Trench again, I could go either way at this point. I do expect to see the marine biologist that Aquaman had an adversarial relationship with sometime soon, and looking forward to it!

Bottom Pick: Superman

I was thinking of dropping Superman after this week, but I want to read the upcoming Stormwatch crossover (issue 6) and re-introduction of Helspont (issue 7) so I guess I'll hang on. The current story is a little too dry and slow moving for my taste. Hopefully the next couple issues will be a little better as the storyline wraps up. Edit: After re-evaluating, decided to drop this title and pick up #7 for new creative team

DC New 52 - Month 3

This is where I rate the new DC comics I've read from last week. Usually, I won't continue reading comics next month that I've rated "Not Interested". From now on, I'll only give the "Pleasant Surprise" and "Disappointment" awards if a comic is much better or worse than I expected, rather than picking a comic to fit these categories every week.

Week 1

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Animal Man, Batwing, Red Lanterns, Swamp Thing
Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Action Comics, Green Arrow, Justice League International, Stormwatch
Okay - Not the best, but will give it another chance next week: Detective Comics
Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Static Shock

Top Pick: Animal Man & Swamp Thing
I decided to give a dual award this week because I like how these books seem to have parallel storylines. Alec Holland is being drafted to fight for "the Green" and Buddy and Maxine are being drafted to fight for "The Red", both against the mysterious "Black" or "Rot" that is creeping up from the dark corners of the DCU (as long as they don't reveal an avatar for the other colors of the rainbow, I'll be okay ;-) ). Some of the art is too creepy and Vertigo-like for my tastes, but so far the story has been strong enough for me to really enjoy these books. They are also different enough from each other that they both seem really fresh and different and not very redundant.
Bottom Pick: Static Shock
It's not a terrible book, it's just not keeping my interest very well. Static continues to fight against a gang that's trying to kill him... or something. Also there's a alien robot virus thing that's somehow involved... see what I mean. Oddly enough, the aspect of the story that interests me the most is Virgil's sister and her clone and the fact that nobody knows who the original is. However, I don't think that's enough to keep me hooked since it only shows up for 1-2 pages every story. I'll drop this book for now and check it out again when a new creative team takes over for issue 7.

Week 2

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Deathstroke, Green Lantern, Legion Lost, Resurrection Man, Suicide Squad
Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Batman and Robin, Batwoman, Demon Knights, Grifter, Superboy
Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Batgirl, Huntress, Penguin
Not Interested - Won't read it next week: Frankenstein, Mr. Terrific

Top Pick: Green Lantern
I still really liked Suicide Squad this week, but I figured I would give someone else a shot at the top. After the first two issues of set-up, we finally see some action as Sinestro and Hal Jordan team up against the Sinestro Corps. I like Sinestro and Hal's adversarial working relationship (like Sinestro making fun of Hal's love life for example). Also, it appears that we are going to see some deeper characterization of Sinestro in the near future, which is always a plus. Add in the shocker ending and you've got a great issue that makes me really anxious for #4!
Bottom Pick: Mr. Terrific
My other "Not Interested" pick this week was Frankenstein. I didn't particularly dislike that book, but I'm just not a big fan of big monster fights, which seems to be the primary focus of the book. Mr. Terrific however, I actively disliked. I love the character, but I haven't liked any of the issues of his single run so far. It's an odd balance between science techno-babble and plot twists that are a little too convenient to be believable. (Like how the villain ties into Terrific's origin for example). I see supporting cast members, but don't feel like they are developing very well. For this and many other reasons, I'm dropping this one.

Week 3

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Batman, Catwoman, Justice League, Supergirl
Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Birds of Prey, Blue Beetle, DC Universe Presents, Green Lantern Corps, Nightwing, Shade, Wonder Woman
Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week: Captain Atom, Legion of Super-Heroes, My Greatest Adventure, Red Hood and the Outlaws
Not Interested - Won't read it next week: None

Top Pick: Supergirl
Batman and Justice League were good this week, but mostly seemed like they were building up to future issues, so I gave another comic the spotlight this month. Even though we all know the story of Supergirl, somehow they still make it fresh. This issue contrasts Supergirl to Superman a lot: Supergirl doesn't care about humans or Earth, Supergirl thinks Krypton still exists, etc. But we also start to break away from Superman in this issue. I like the new character introduced: Simon Tycho. He's a "28 year old trillionaire" who is quirky and cold and appears to be Supergirl's Luthor. I'm looking forward to finding out how Supergirl's first few encounters with humans (which have been unanimously unpleasant) will shape her opinion of her new home. Will she eventually become a hero in her cousin's footsteps, or remain a super-powered wildcard?
Bottom Pick: Red Hood and the Outlaws or Captain Atom
I have mixed feelings about Red Hood. I liked the flashbacks in this issue, but had a really hard time getting invested in the story. They are on a mission to avenge Jason's buddies by taking on something called the Untitled... I'm interested in learning more about what bonds these three together. It looks like I'll have to wait until issue 6 to get more of that story.. hopefull I can hold on that long. I liked the first part of Captain Atom's story where he's running around saving people's lives and they think its "Divine Intervention". Then it takes a turn for the worse when he flies off to Libya to turn the tide of a rebellion. It just seemed like forced political relevance. It didn't seem odd to me that Captain Atom threw himself in the middle of the rebellion, but it seemed totally out of character for Flash for some reason. Then something goes crazy with Cap's powers and he comes running back to the States to be confronted by General Eiling, who is human again. Eiling and military service was a big part of the long running Captain Atom series, so it will be interesting to see where that goes. I am still confused by Captain Atom's new transmuting powers.. can you give them back to Firestorm please?

Week 4 (and Week 5)

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week:  Aquaman, Flash
Good - Solid book, want to read next week: All-Star Western, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Justice League Dark, Savage Hawkman, Superman, Voodoo
Okay - Not the best, but will give another shot next week:  Batman: Dark Knight, Legion: Secret Origin, Teen Titans, THUNDER Agents
Not Interested - Won't read it next week:  Fury of Firestorm

Top Pick: Aquaman & Flash
I started the month by having a tie for the top pick, so I might as well end the same way. Although very different, both of these books had similar elements that I liked this week. We start to learn more about the villains (The Trench and Mob Rule respectively) as we approach the end of the first arcs. They also appear to be setting up future storylines with the introduction of Stephen Shin in Aquaman, a marine biologist obsessed with finding Atlantis, and the cameos of Captain Cold and Trickster in Flash. If I had to pick a definite winner this week, Flash might pull slightly ahead because of the awesome scene with the airplane.
Bottom Pick: Fury of Firestorm
I gave this series a couple issues because I was really excited for a Firestorm book, but now I've decided to drop it. I like that Ronnie and Jason are both in the picture, but the fact that they are both flying around as Firestorm and then eventually merge to make some super-Firestorm is not gripping me for some reason. I'm not sure when Captain Atom and Firestorm switched powers, but we're seeing a lot more nuclear energy blasts than intelligent uses of powers (like.. transmutation?). Of course, with Ronnie and Jason combining their powers whenever they run into trouble, it feels more like Captain Planet than Captain Atom anyway. Although the main bad guys appear to be some covert government group, classic Firestorm villains are re-imagined and pop up sometimes (e.g. Hyena, Killer Frost), which may eventually be interesting.. I consider myself somewhat a continuity hound, but I'm willing to ignore drastic changes to characters if the book is good enough (e.g. Flash, Supergirl, etc.). I'm sorry to say that in my opinion, this one is not worth the trouble.

DC New 52 - Month 2 (some spoilers)

basically a repeat of what I did last month. Although this time, I didn't read anything that I marked "Not Interested" last month.. Also, I changed up the category names a little bit and wrote separate reviews for the four "award winners". Let's see how it goes!

Week 1

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Action Comics, Red Lanterns, Swamp Thing, Batwing
Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Animal Man, Detective Comics, Huntress, Justice League International, Penguin
Okay - On the fence, not sure if I want it next week: Green Arrow, Static Shock, Stormwatch
Not Interested - Definitely don't want it next week: Hawk and Dove

Top Pick: Action Comics
Action Comics gets the top pick for the second week in a row. I like that Morrison is starting to include more elements of the Superman universe by including Steel, Metallo and Brainiac (at least it looks like him) in this story. He changes a lot of the history of Superman, but also includes nods to Golden and Silver age comics that are much appreciated by fanboys like me (the scene with the indestructible cape is an especially nice touch). Although most of the story is just Superman being held in a prison cell, Morrison somehow manages to keep it interesting and funny. Another thing I liked about this week is that it almost felt like an ensemble cast with Lex and Lois having a lot of face time and interesting sub-plots. Also, it doesn't hurt that he includes at least 3 different hooks that leave you dying to buy the next issue and find out what happens!
Bottom Pick: Hawk and Dove
I would like to start by saying that I have never really been a fan of Hawk and Dove, and haven't read much with them in it. I liked the Dove's character a lot in Blackest Night/Brightest Day and her relationship with Deadman, but Hawk just gets on my nerves. I guess the fact that he's been dead or a villain for the past 17 years doesn't help much. A lot of the reviews I've read of this issue so far focus mainly on Rob Liefeld's artwork. I thought the artwork was fine, but it was probably my complete lack of interest in the story and the characters that turned me off of this comic. I like Sterling Gates run on Supergirl, but I haven't been enjoying his more recent work on Kid Flash or this. To any Hawk and Dove fans out there, more power to you, but I won't be picking this one up next week.
Pleasant Surprise: Red Lanterns
When the New 52 was first announced in June, I was NOT looking forward to this book. The Red Lanterns have so far been portrayed as having no consciousness or conscience, so I just assumed this book would be a bunch of crazy, angry psychopaths running around killing people, like Guy Gardner when he put on a ring. The story, however, focuses on Atrocitus who is the only Red Lantern to keep his sanity. He feels the tug of others rage at the injustice in the universe and goes to deal out vengeance (not justice). This issue focuses on the question "whose rage is most deserving of vengeance"? Although Atrocitus makes a selection, we see that the issue is much more complicated as we are made to feel sympathetic towards those who receive Atrocitus's punishment. What's more, Atrocitus himself questions his actions and his mission. The issue ends with Atrocitus deciding to raise the awareness of another Red Lantern, perhaps adding another complex character to next week's issue?
Big Disappointment: Static Shock
When DC announced that it would add two Milestone books to its line-up, I was extremely excited. DC's revival of Xombi, although short-lived, was gratifying. Since John Rozum was the writer of both Xombi's revival and the New 52 Static Shock, I assumed I would like it as much. Unfortunately, this did not turn out to be the case. I think what made the original Static series and the show cool was that it focused on the fact that Virgil was a kid. It showed him in school and you got to know his circle of friends and their problems. It also dealt with issues that kids would be facing. In this issue, a bunch of bad guys are trying to kill Static... substitute any other hero and you've got exactly the same story. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't using the character to his full potential.

Week 2

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Batman and Robin, Green Lantern, Shade, Suicide Squad
Good - Solid book, want to read next week:  Batgirl, Batwoman, Deathstroke, Grifter, Legion Lost, My Greatest Adventure, Resurrection Man, Superboy
Okay - On the fence, not sure if I want it next week:  Demon Knights, Frankenstein, Mr. Terrific
Not Interested - Definitely don't want it next week: None

Top Pick: Suicide Squad
For many years now, I have been waiting for a new Suicide Squad book that would recapture the awesomeness of the original series. Secret Six was similar, but different enough that I still held out hope for the return of the Squad. "Raise the Flag" was awesome, but sadly only a limited series. When New 52's Suicide Squad was announced I had mixed feelings, having seen how the concept could be horribly mishandled (see Suicide Squad Volume 2). Two issues into this latest run, I think this is the book I've been waiting for. Whereas the first issue was mostly set up, now we get to the first mission. The Squad must wade into a stadium of innocents stricken with a deadly techno-virus to find the cure. Its dark, gritty and somehow funny. The characters run the range from the mildly heroic to the sociopathic, but are forced to work together for their survival. The team also suffers its first casualty in this issue. Its exactly who I thought it would be, but there's an added twist that's a nice touch. Although Deadshot and Harley will probably be in the whole thing (like Deadshot and Boomerang in the original), the rest of the cast is expendable, which makes every mission exciting and important! I'm looking forward to seeing the rotating cast of characters in upcoming issues.
Bottom Pick: Demon Knights
I don't have much to say about this one. I didn't think it was bad, it's just not a genre I usually enjoy. In this issue, the team starts to come together as they are attacked by a bunch of monsters while holed up in a bar. There was a lot of gory violence, but not much in the way of plot or characterization. Vandal Savage might be the character we get the best feel for, but we already know him! I'll give it another week before dropping it to see if it gets better
Pleasant Surprise: Shade
I was growing very annoyed of James Robinson's run on Justice League of America, so I wasn't expecting much from this series. I have to say I was happy to be wrong in this case. Essentially this story sees the Shade leading a happy, albeit lazy existence after the developments of the Starman series. It is pointed out several times in the story that Shade needs an adventure to get back to his old, interesting self. Luckily, just such an adventure comes to town when a certain mercenary comes to town looking for him. I like Robinson's interpretation of Shade, and I'm glad that he has a chance to stretch his legs and take the leading role in a way he hasn't done before except in a 4-issue miniseries and a few issues of Starman. I am eager to see the origin of the Shade revealed at last. If I remember correctly, the first miniseries told his history feuding with the Ludlow family, but it began just after he had received his powers, and had no memory of his life before.
Big Disappointment: Mr. Terrific
Mr. Terrific was one of the books I was looking forward to the most and I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed. I'm not sure if this is because the character only works as the "smart guy" on a team book, or if he just isn't being handled well in this book. It seems like the strategy is to use as many big sciency words as possible to make the character sound smart rather than trying to engage the reader. Ironically, the title of this issue is "Blinded by Science", which is how I felt after reading the issue. I'll read #3 before deciding whether or not to drop it.

Week 3

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week: Batman, Justice League, Nightwing, Supergirl
Good - Solid book, want to read next week:  Birds of Prey, Blue Beetle, Catwoman, DC Universe Presents, Green Lantern Corps, Wonder Woman
Okay - On the fence, not sure if I want it next week:  Captain Atom, Legion of Super-Heroes, Red Hood and the Outlaws
Not Interested - Definitely don't want it next week: None

Top Pick:
Justice League
I had a hard time picking between this and Batman for the top pick this week because I liked them both, but ultimately I think I had more fun reading Justice League. There's a lot I liked about this issue, so I'll just mention them in rapid succession: Jim Lee's super-detailed artwork, the fact that Hal and Barry already knew each other, Cyborg's updated (but shockingly similar to the original) origin, Superman vs. Flash fight. Also, the excerpts from an interview with Steve Trevor about his experiences with Wonder Woman are a nice touch which mention Aquaman and Captain Marvel (all three hopefully appearing in JL soon!) I like that the team is growing organically, rather than the classic "everybody just happened to show up to fight the same menace" approach. I'm eager to see the team's first fight against Darkseid, and wonder if this heralds a return for Darkseid and the Fourth World, or if they'll only appear in flashback books.
Bottom Pick: Red Hood and the Outlaws
I did like the first issue of this book, but now I'm losing interest. The first issue involved Jason Todd saving Roy Harper from an execution for some reason. Now the two of them and Starfire (who they are both sleeping with, not that any of them care) are trying to avenge the people that trained Jason when he came back from the dead. I like the characters and think they have potential for an interesting story, but as I mentioned before, hate the characterization (if you can call it that) of Starfire. I'm not following the story either, but I'm not sure if this is because of bad storytelling or if I'm just not that interested. I'll give it a couple more issues to see where its going..
Pleasant Surprise: Supergirl
I didn't necessarily think this book was going to be bad, but I didn't think I would like it so much since its essentially rehashing a story we've seen at least twice before (three if you count the cartoon). Superman's cousin shows up on Earth and he has to help her acclimate to her new surroundings. Of all the Supergirl origins, this one most resembles the Superman/Batman story "Supergirl" which introduced the last incarnation of the character before the New 52. In both stories, Supergirl was a teenager on Krypton when her cousin Kal-El was only a baby. In the Superman/Batman story, Supergirl was sent to Earth to look after her baby cousin and was surprised to see he was an adult when she arrived. In this story, Supergirl doesn't know where she is, how she got there, or that Krypton has been destroyed. It's very interesting to see her completely out of her element, dealing with this shock and discovering her powers for the first time. We also have the beginnings of another story brewing as a mysterious figure steals knowledge of Krypton (hopefully not Luthor or someone similarly predictable..)
Big Disappointment: Legion of Super-Heroes
Legion is one of my favorite concepts in comics. I was excited to hear that Levitz would be continuing his run in the New 52, but haven't been overly impressed yet. The main plot seems to focus around the Daxams: aliens as strong as Superman who are ticked off at the United Planets. I think the best Legion stories deal with a small group on a mission, with maybe a couple pages with other Legionnaires to set up other stories or subplots. This issue devotes at least half the pages to other Legionnaires who just stand around talking. This makes it a little difficult to follow the story, especially for new readers (which I'm not, but I sympathize). This, coupled with the fact that virtually nothing happens in this issue makes it the disappointment of the week.

Week 4

Great - Awesome, top picks of the week:  Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Voodoo
Good - Solid book, want to read next week: Justice League Dark, Legion: Secret Origin, Superman, Teen Titans
Okay - On the fence, not sure if I want it next week: All Star Western, Batman: The Dark Knight, Fury of Firestorm, Savage Hawkman
Not Interested - Definitely don't want it next week:  I Vampire

Top Pick: Flash
I was very hesitant about this new Flash series. It's surprising that Geoff John's run would be cut short as he has often called Barry one of his favorite characters and it seems like he's in the position to write whatever he wants. I figured if anything, that he would drop GL and switch to Flash, but obviously I was wrong! So far, I have been very pleasantly surprised by Francis Manapul's writing. His artwork remains awesome, but now he has the opportunity to come up his cool ideas that let him stretch his artistic legs (I'm thinking specifically of the demonstration of Barry's new power). The story itself is interesting and it makes me forget that Johns had set up a bunch of stuff at the end of his Flash run that nothing ever happened with. On the flip side, Manapul is using most of the characters they introduced in the last Flash run like Barry's coworkers in the crime lab, so that's good!
Bottom Pick: I Vampire
Vampire fiction is not something I'm a big fan of. I watched Buffy, but that's about as far as I go. I listened to the author talk at a comic con and he laid out the basic premise: a guy turns his girlfriend into a vampire and she becomes really evil so he has to fight her. After reading two issues, I couldn't really tell you anything additional that happens beyond that one-sentence description. I am also a little confused whether or not this story occurs in the DCnU or not.. Just like the war books, I'm sure this has an audience, but it's not me.
Pleasant Surprise: Flash (see above)
Big Disappointment:
Fury of Firestorm
Whether we're talking about Ronnie or Jason, Firestorm is a pretty awesome character. Having enjoyed some of Gail Simone's writing in the past, I was expecting great things from this book. I'm not really a tremendous fan of the new Firestorm set-up. Traditionally, there would be one person controlling the body and mind of Firestorm, and the other person they fused with would appear as a floating head who gave them advice and strength. Now Ronnie and Jason are both Firestorm independently (not really a fan of their costumes...) and when they come together they turn into a big Brimstone-like mindless destructive beast. When they are not together, they spout hackneyed "I'm a nerd, you're a jock, so we can't get along" dialogue that gets old real fast. I'll give it a couple issues to see where its going before giving it up.

DC New 52 picks

I have a goal to read all 52 #1s so that I can decide which books to read in the coming months. I was originally going to write a review for each issue I read so that I could get the review quest, but I decided I was far too lazy for that. Without further ado, here are my thoughts on the New 52 issues I have read so far:

Week 1

Interested me enough that I want to buy it next week: Action Comics, Animal Man, Batwing, Swamp Thing

Was okay.. might buy the trade: Batgirl, Detective Comics, Green Arrow, Hawk and Dove, Justice League International, Static Shock, Stormwatch

Not interested: Men of War, O.M.A.C.

Top pick of the week: Action Comics

Worst of the week: Men of War

Most pleasant surprise of the week: Batwing

Biggest disappointment of the week: Static Shock

I came out of week 1 with pretty high hopes. I think this is largely in part to Action Comics. It did a great job of taking Superman and his supporting cast back to their roots, while at the same time modernizing and making it fresh. Unlike most stuff that Morrison has written recently, I could actually follow the storyline! I was also very intrigued by Batwing. You would think that with so many Bat books flooding the shelves, the concept would get stale, but Winick adds another character to the fold and pulls it off pretty well I think. Animal Man and Swamp Thing were weirder than the stuff I usually read, but they were still interesting. The titles that I didn't like this week were expected, so I wasn't that disappointed. The biggest disappointment was Static, but I guess my expectations were pretty high since I like Rozum so much. Justice League International was also not as good as I had hoped, but I think that it definitely has possibilities for the future. Most of the first issue was devoted to set-up, so I'll wait until next month to see how I feel. The rest of the comics this week were about what I expected.

Week 2

Interested me enough that I want to buy it next week: Green Lantern, Resurrection Man, Suicide Squad, Superboy

Was okay.. might buy the trade: Batman and Robin, Batwoman, Deathstroke, Demon Knights, Frankenstein Agent of SHADE, Grifter, Legion Lost, Mr. Terrific, Red Lanterns

Top pick of the week: Suicide Squad

Worst of the week: Didn't particularly dislike any of them... maybe Demon Knights?

Most pleasant surprise of the week: Superboy

Biggest disappointment of the week: Legion Lost

This was the week of disillusionment. Although there weren't any titles that I flat out disliked, many titles were not as good as I had hoped. Although I have the same number of issues I liked as Week 1, I'd have to say that overall I liked them less. Green Lantern seemed like just another arc in John's GL run, which is good but didn't blow me out of the water. "Sinestro is a green lantern again" is an interesting storyline, but I expect to see Hal back in the seat pretty soon. Legion Lost and Mr. Terrific were two titles that I was looking forward to the most, but turned out to be just okay.. Superboy, which I expected I would hate, actually turned out to be one of my favorites. Red Lanterns was also better than I had expected. I picked Suicide Squad as my favorite this week because it set up the first mission very well and made me excited for next week. I have high hopes for this book, as the first Suicide Squad was one of my favorite comics. However, I know that not everyone can write the Squad as well as Ostrander (since the second Suicide Squad volume is one of my least favorites...)

Week 3

(I put Justice League here because it looks like that's where it will be in the line-up in the future)

Interested me enough that I want to buy it next week: Justice League, Batman, Birds of Prey, Captain Atom, DC Universe Presents, Green Lantern Corps

Was okay.. might buy the trade: Blue Beetle, Catwoman, Legion of Super-Heroes, Nightwing, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Supergirl

Not interested: Wonder Woman

Top pick of the week: Batman

Worst of the week: Wonder Woman

Most pleasant surprise of the week: Birds of Prey

Biggest disappointment of the week: Wonder Woman

I liked most of the comics I read this week, but there were a few disappointments. Having never read anything by Brian Azzarello (except for his Flashpoint mini), I wasn't sure what to expect from Wonder Woman. I'm sorry to say I wasn't blown away. The inclusion of a couple greek gods was interesting, but I feel like they were focused on so much that we really didn't learn anything about WW in what is supposed to be her introductory issue. I liked most of "Red Hood" except for the new characterization of Starfire. The fact that she doesn't remember Dick Grayson or any of her time with the Titans is pretty insulting to the character and her fans. We were told that although there would be changes to the characters, they were going "back to basics" and would essentially be the same. I don't think Starfire is... On the flip side: Green Lantern Corps is an excellent introduction to John Stewart and Guy Gardner and sets up the story to follow. Batman does a good job of showing regular readers that the status quo will be maintained, but also setting us up with a cliffhanger. I wasn't really expecting much from Birds of Prey, but was pleasantly surprised. I was a little annoyed that Captain Atom now seems to have Firestorm's powers, but the story was still interesting.

Week 4

Interested me enough that I want to buy it next week: Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Justice League Dark, Voodoo

Was okay.. might buy the trade: All-Star Western, Batman: The Dark Knight, Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men, I Vampire, Savage Hawkman, Superman, Teen Titans

Not interested: Blackhawks

Top pick of the week: Aquaman

Worst of the week: Blackhawks

Most pleasant surprise of the week: Justice League Dark

Biggest disappointment of the week: Superman

I liked the five books I picked this week a lot, but they all had the same problem: not much happened. They were excellent introductions and first issues, and made me anxious to read next week. All-Star Western and Savage Hawkman were better than I expected. Superman, Firestorm and Dark Knight weren't as good as I expected. I Vampire looked interesting, but I wished they had given more basic info about how vampires work in the DCU. They don't die with sunlight and they can shapeshift into anything, WTF? Teen Titans was pretty much what I had expected from the various interviews and articles I had read. Essentially just a fresh look at the four main characters. None of them are associated with their adult counterparts anymore, but it doesn't seem to take away from the story yet.

DC Revamp Day 8 (6/10): Superman

Top pick of the day: Supergirl
Not interested in:

Action Comics #1 - Grant Morrison and Rags Morales

Not a lot of detail is given here, so it's hard to decide how excited I am for this one. The cover is a little silly: showing Superman wearing the practical jeans and sneakers, but still wearing the cape? If they were trying to go with the Superboy jeans and t-shirt look, they might as well have gone all the way. Considering his costume on the cover of Superman #1, I don't think its a big deal, just pointing it out. Other than that, there's not a lot to say on this yet. It's really annoying that they are restarting the numbering, but I'm sure they'll switch it back once they hook their new readers. Grant Morrison is cool, so I'll be interested to see what he has in store for Superman.

Superman #1 - George Perez and Jesus Merino

I know George Perez has done a lot of art, but I'm not familiar with his writing, so I can't draw much from that. Not much detail given here either except for that this will be a Superman book... so yeah.

Supergirl #1 - Michael Green, Mike Johnson and Mahmud Asrar

This one caught my interest. I liked Green's work on Superman/Batman, Smallville and Heroes, so I know he can write. The line that caught my interest was that Supergirl had none of Superman's affection for the people of Earth. This was played at in stories like Amazons Attack and New Krypton, but it will be interesting to see how this is handled in her solo series. I think the costume is good, looks more Kryptonian which probably fits with her new storyline better.

Superboy #1 - Scott Lobdell, R.B. Silva and Rob Lean

The initial reaction people had to this was "Superboy's a robot now?" It certainly looks that way from the cover, but they also mention "Kryptonian and human DNA" in the description, so maybe he is not THAT far off from the Superboy we all know and love (The Superboy on the cover of Teen Titans doesn't look like a robot..). It looks like the "Young Justice" superheroes are starting over, so it will be interesting to see if the Death and Return of Superman is retconned, as well as Superboy's relationship with Superman and his earth parents. All in all, I am only mildly interested in this one.

UPDATE (6/13): The description of the book now mentions that Superboy is a clone, so maybe the machines are just used to grow the clone? Since they appear to be starting over, the first issue will probably see Superboy's escape from wherever he is being kept.

DC Revamp Day 7 (6/9): The Edge

Top pick of the day:  Stormwatch
Not interested in: Blackhawks

Stormwatch #1 - Paul Cornell and Miguel Sepulveda

I have to admit, I'm looking forward to this one. I'm probably one of the few people who liked Stormwatch more before it turned into the Authority. I don't foresee Authority happening in the DCU anytime soon since the whole point of that book was that Apollo, Midnighter and the others were so much more powerful than the rest of the world. I'll be interested to see how they are handled now that they are just a drop in a bucketful of powerful heroes on Earth. I'm also wondering who will be included in the "surprising new roster". Is it too much to hope for some characters from Shadow Cabinet? probably... I'm surprised to see J'onn pop up here. I was really hoping that he would be a member of the JLA, but I guess that's not the case. In my head, J'onn is sort of a big friendly giant who does notcondone the kind of violence that became common in the Stormwatch line. I guess we'll see if that has changed...

Blackhawks #1 - Mike Costa and Ken Lashley
Sgt. Rock and the Men of War #1 - Ivan Brandon and Tom Derenick

I'm sure these books will have an audience, but I'm not it.. Sorry but I'll pass.

All-Star Western #1 - Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Moritat

It's interesting that the name of this book was changed from Jonah Hex to All-Star Western, yet it still appears to star Jonah Hex. I love Hex, but I hope that we will see some of DC's other wide range of western heroes in this book. Otherwise, appears to simply be a continuation of the current series (which isn't a bad thing as far as I'm concerned)

Deathstroke #1 - Kyle Higgins, Joe Bennett and Art Thibert

I think Deathstroke is a cool character if handled properly. I don't know anything about the writer, so this series could go either way. It looks like there will be a lot of "guys with guns" comics coming out in this release. Where Blackhawks and Sgt. Rock are war and All-Star Western is western, I hope that Deathstroke will continue to interact with the rest of the superhero community in his book. He's already proven he can hold his own against the biggest heroes in DC, so it would be anticlimactic if his book was about him taking contracts on anything less than superheroes and supervillains.

Grifter #1 - Nathan Edmondson, CAFU and BIT

In my mind, Grifter is the most iconic character from the Wildstorm universe. I'm not sure why... It looks like his book will have him battling Daemonites? If that's the case, I hope it only lasts for a couple issues before he moves on to something else. I imagine Grifter in my head as a drifter. In Wildstorm, he had a hand in everything from government ops in Team 7 to gladitorial combat with the Coda to superheroics and space-age warfare with the Wildcats. I'd like to see Grifter make his way through the DC universe to see what kind of trouble he can get into.

OMAC #1 - Dan DiDio, Keith Giffen and Scott Koblish

Hm... not really interested. I was not a big fan of Didio's run on the Outsiders, and the OMAC concept has never really interested me. This run looks like a rip off of the Hulk.

Suicide Squad #1 - Adam Glass and Marco Rudy

This was on my list of series I wanted to return. The original run of Suicide Squad by Ostrander was one of my favorite comics of all time. I really liked how it took some very one-dimensional, underused characters and gave them interesting and unique personalities. We had the opportunity to dive into the minds of many DC heroes and villains who did not see the world in black and white. Of course, there is always the possibility that this will suck (can we talk about Suicide Squad vol. 2?), but I'm holding out hope! Harley's redesign is interesting.. I also see Suicide Squad vet Deadshot has returned to the fold. I wonder if they will acknowledge the fact that he just shot Amanda Waller for trying to recruit him and said he would never join again. Probably not. I guess at this point we don't even know that Waller will be involved in this version of the squad. Only time will tell.

Blue Beetle #1 - Tony Bedard and Ig Guara

This is another series that I wanted to see return after the revamp. I think Blue Beetle and Static have the potential to become very popular with young readers, so I'm glad to see they are getting their own series again. I like Bedard, but hopefully he will keep the same lighthearted tone that Rogers maintained in the original run.
