FINALLY! We find out the terrible secret the Kingdom has been hiding. Next issue, we get to find out the identity of the bad guy. They have been hinting that it is the general who Batwing served as a child, but I think its pretty obvious who it really is... Still, this issue does a good job of wrapping up the first plotline and getting us ready for the epic finale next week.

Bottom Pick: Stormwatch

Stormwatch is a hard title to get right, or at least a hard one to get me interested in. Too often it veers towards theoretical science and just saying a bunch of smart sounding words together and hoping we will be impressed. It's the same argument I had with Mr. Terrific essentially. I was intrigued by the traitor on the team, new characters and other elements of Cornell's run, but this issue doesn't quite stand up to the standard he set.

Top Pick: Legion Lost

Suicide Squad was (of course) awesome this week, but I'm picking Legion Lost for another reason. Often when a title you like gets another writer, you're worried it won't be as good. This issue laid my fears to rest and got me excited for a new direction for this book!

Bottom Pick: Batgirl

It's okay, but not enough to keep my interest week to week. Barbara is not the same smart, confident character that many of us know. She has essentially been turned into another straightforward super-hero book without anything unique except for the fact she has post-traumatic stress from her former paralysis.

I didn't like this book at all at the beginning, but now I'm getting into it a little more. This issues introduces a couple more gods: Eros (Cupid) and Hephaestus (Vulcan), reveals a dark secret about the amazons and leads up to Wonder Woman's descent into Hell next issue.

Bottom Pick: T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents

Not a bad issue, I just didn't like some of the plot twists. SPOILER: many characters who have died are brought back and then my favorite character is killed off. I'll wait until the next issue to judge the miniseries as a whole...

Top Pick: Green Lantern: New Guardians

This series has been building slowly (almost too slowly), but it finally pays off with this issue! There are a lot of reveals including who stole the rings and why, the backstory of Invictus and his relationship with Larfleeze and the story behind the fake solar system. In addition to giving us all this information, we finally start to see the team acting like a team. I'm looking forward to seeing how the series progresses from here.

Bottom Pick: Teen Titans

What should have been an epic conclusion to a story arc was mediocre in my opinion. I'm thinking of dropping this title, but I have to at least stick around for "The Culling" and crossovers with Legion Lost...

Other Thoughts: Superman got another try out because of the new creative team. It looks like it might be a little better than the last six issues were, so I'm adding it back to the list.

I was reading a Vertigo preview of a new series coming out by Dan Abnett called "the New Deadwardians". Essentially, its about vampires during a zombie apocalypse (there's more to it than that, but I'll let you go discover it for yourself). It got me thinking about the important things in life: specifically, who would have the advantage in a zombie apocalypse between vampires and werewolves?

The cop-out answer is: it depends. There have been so many different versions of the mythology that governs vampires and werewolves that its hard to pick a clear winner. It depends on their weaknesses, strengths and the other rules of their species. Hobbling together rules from a bunch of different sources (Buffy, Walking Dead, etc.), this is what the breakdown looks like:

Vampires

Advantages

• Will not be attacked and can't be turned into a zombie
• Long life
• Super-strength?
• Do not require sleep

Disadvantages

• Only sustained by living (non-zombie) flesh
• Powers weakened by feeding on smaller animals

Top Pick: Animal Man

This issue is essentially filler, but is enjoyable enough that you don't really notice. Rather than giving us an issue of everyone standing around talking about what happened last week with a few hints about what's about to happen next week (see JLI or Stormwatch this week to see what I mean), we get to watch some of Buddy Baker's film career. Buddy Baker has been a stuntman for a long time, but this is the first time I can remember actually seeing him act in something. The film itself is about an aging, down an out superhero which seems to have a lot of parallels to Buddy's own life.

Bottom Pick: Stormwatch

As I mentioned above, this issue is essentially filler between the battle with the traitor on the team last issue and the alien invasion that seems to be on the horizon next issue. Much like JLI this week, this issue is all about bringing the team together: a leader is chosen, Apollo and Midnighter finally join and the ship is (somewhat) brought into line. I gave it a "good" rating, so I really don't have much to complain about this week, it was just a little slower than usual.

I didn't think this issue was particularly bad, I just forgot who all the characters were since the last issue and had a hard time following the plot.. I'll wait until its a trade so I can read the whole thing at once and maybe understand what's going on a little better.

I like how this issue starts from the point of view of one of Choke's mind-controlled henchmen. It slowly introduces us to the team and the storyline from an outsider's point of view. In the second half, the team formulates a plan to draw Choke into the open, but end up in a trap themselves! It seems to be leading up to an exciting conclusion to the first storyline.

Bottom Pick: Captain Atom

I've been mostly disappointed with this series. I think I held onto it so long because I was hoping for something more like the original Captain Atom series. I don't really like the artwork of this series, don't really understand the random ticking clock and don't really feel like sticking around to see where its going...

Top Pick: Aquaman

This issue is mostly character-driven and focuses on Mera. Mera's a character who always seems to be around in Aquaman titles, but doesn't really have much depth. I like how Geoff Johns had added a little background and personality character through Blackest Night, Brightest Day and now this series. It's filler issue before the "Who Sank Atlantis" storyline, but still a very entertaining read.

Bottom Pick: Voodoo

I don't like the direction this book has taken since Ron Marz's departure. It was cool when it was a fugitive, cat and mouse book. Now it seems to be more of a secret alien invasion book, along the same lines as Grifter. Not really a fan.

A lot of action going on in both titles this month. Buddy fights to save his family, only to have his daughter unleash all sorts of zombie monsters at the end. Meanwhile, Alec finally learns how to channel his plant powers without turning entirely into Swamp Thing and has a knock-down, drag-out with his girlfriends evil brother. The two books are moving closer together and a crossover is on the way!

Bottom Pick: Huntress

Starting to get bored with this one. I would have preferred a miniseries with less issues, but a faster-moving, more concise storyline. I'll pick it up when it comes out as a trade.

Top Pick: Resurrection Man

This issue reveals the origin of Resurrection Man, and it is very different than what we saw in the first series. The origins of Hooker and the Body Doubles are also hinted at in this issue, as well as future plotlines. All-in-all a good issue that shows that Abnett and Lanning still have stories to tell about the character they created, and they are not just rehashing what they have already done.

Bottom Pick: Grifter

Top Pick: DC Universe Presents and Blue Beetle

I didn't have a strong feeling about my favorite book this week, so I decided to split the top spot. I didn't really understand the whole "looking for a new question of existence" plot, but I liked this issue of DCU Presents because it was a good wrap-up of the Deadman feature. Deadman got to accomplish his goal and come away with more appreciation of his power, so that's all good. Blue Beetle has also been good recently. I don't like some of the changes to characters from the original series, but I guess it's a good thing that the writer is going in his own direction with the character. I liked this week's issue about the same as Catwoman and BoP, but I picked Beetle because I was actually suprised/excited at the end of the issue and wanted to see what happens next week.

Bottom Pick: Legion of Super-Heroes

If ever there was a filler issue in the long, proud history of comic books, this is it. Each 1-2 pages focuses on a different Legionnaire and the result is that absolutely nothing exciting happens this issue. All the evidence needed is found on the cover, it depicts three "exciting things" that turn out to be mundane tasks the Legionnaires are doing in their free time. Ultra Boy "pushed to the limit" is just testing out some new weapon on a target in a training room. Glorith "turning her back on the Legion" is just her sitting in her room meditating before she decides to go downstairs for some lunch. Chameleon Boy "and the Science Police" is one page where the SP are like "hey Chameleon Boy, let's chat about your last mission".

Top Pick: Aquaman

This is a good transition issue between the Trench storyline and the Who Sank Atlantis storyline. It switches back and forth between Aquaman stuck in a desert miles from any water and the story of how he got there. At the end, Aquaman makes a revelation about how Atlantis sank that will doubtless set him on some sort of quest in the next couple issues. There are also a couple fun facts we learn this issue (e.g. Aquaman has super hearing, the "A" on Aquaman's belt stands for Atlantis)

Bottom Pick: Savage Hawkman

I'm dropping this book because it's not holding my interest very well. We haven't learned too much about the character at this point and don't care a lot about what happens to him. The supporting cast is boring and interchangeable. The threats all seem to be some sort of amorphous, shape-shifting monsters that aren't too interesting. I'm also not a big fan of the artwork. Maybe I'll check it out under a new creative team, but will likely just let this one go.

Top Pick: Batwing

I picked Batwing this month because I liked the fact that they gave us David's back story. Revealed as a child soldier in an evil man's army, we can see that there are many paths to becoming a Batman. Where Bruce Wayne is out for revenge/justice, it seems that David is more about redemption. Of course, he's not doing a very good job protecting the former members of "The Kingdom", but I guess we'll let that slide. It also seems that they are setting up Massacre to be David's supposedly dead brother Isaac. A pretty obvious plot twist, but cool nonetheless.

Bottom Pick: Detective Comics

While I didn't find the story terrible, I just figure with ten other Bat-books out there plus appearances in Justice League and JLI, I can afford to drop some of the more mediocre ones. I wasn't a big fan of Tony Daniel's work in "Batman" and this series hasn't been much different, so I think I'll drop this book until a new creative team comes on board (hopefully soon...)

Random Thoughts:

Giffen and Jurgens did a good job on Green Arrow.. hopefully the next creator change for this book will help it even more. Whatever happened to Maxwell Lord - will we ever see him in JLI? Was that Twilight that made an appearance at the end of Stormwatch? If so, I'm excited!

Top Pick: Suicide Squad

A lot going on this week. First, Captain Boomerang takes the lead in a mission against a snake-themed bad guy group. On DC's website, they are called "Kobra", the long-standing DC group, but in the comic they appear to be called Basilisk, a little confusing. Anyway, as the solicit states there is a betrayal and a member of the Squad "falls" (not necessarily dies). I didn't see the twist coming in this issue and enjoyed it thoroughly. Next, after learning of Joker's recent troubles in Detective Comics, Harley apparently starts a metahuman prison riot that the Squad is tasked with ending in 18 minutes before their heads explode. All-in-all an exciting issue which sets up the next three Harley-centric issues, can't wait!

Bottom Pick: Shade

I still like this book, but this issue was a little dull. It is essentially Shade talking and dreaming against his enemies the whole time. The last page is a semi-cliffhanger that makes me hope next issue will be more interesting.

Random Thoughts: Will Jimmy Palmiotti explain what happened to the first two Rays he was writing about in Freedom Fighters? Hooker's back in Resurrection Man - I'm excited! Is the "terrorist" group Fairchild is in Gen13? If so, are there now 13 members?

Top Pick: Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle is a book I've been on the fence about in the New 52. I really liked the first series with Jaime, especially his interactions with supporting characters like his parents, Paco and Brenda. Having almost everyone know his secret was also somewhat refreshing. In the new series, the characterization of Paco in particular has changed dramatically and I am having a hard time getting used to it. This issue convinced me that the book has potential. I particularly like the struggle between Jaime and the scarab, which is being handled well so far.

Bottom Pick: Red Hood and the Outlaws

Red Hood is another book I've been on the fence about, but decided to go the other way and drop this one. I don't think its a bad book, I'm just having a hard time getting invested in the plot, or caring about the characters. Maybe I would pick this one back up under a different writer...

Top Pick: Aquaman

This issue wraps up the "Trench" storyline pretty well and also brings the "Aquaman is nobody's favorite superhero" bit full-circle. It also teases the next story, what sank Atlantis? I'm not sure if we should expect to see the Trench again, I could go either way at this point. I do expect to see the marine biologist that Aquaman had an adversarial relationship with sometime soon, and looking forward to it!

Bottom Pick: Superman

I was thinking of dropping Superman after this week, but I want to read the upcoming Stormwatch crossover (issue 6) and re-introduction of Helspont (issue 7) so I guess I'll hang on. The current story is a little too dry and slow moving for my taste. Hopefully the next couple issues will be a little better as the storyline wraps up. Edit: After re-evaluating, decided to drop this title and pick up #7 for new creative team

This is where I rate the new DC comics I've read from last week. Usually, I won't continue reading comics next month that I've rated "Not Interested". From now on, I'll only give the "Pleasant Surprise" and "Disappointment" awards if a comic is much better or worse than I expected, rather than picking a comic to fit these categories every week.

I came out of week 1 with pretty high hopes. I think this is largely in part to Action Comics. It did a great job of taking Superman and his supporting cast back to their roots, while at the same time modernizing and making it fresh. Unlike most stuff that Morrison has written recently, I could actually follow the storyline! I was also very intrigued by Batwing. You would think that with so many Bat books flooding the shelves, the concept would get stale, but Winick adds another character to the fold and pulls it off pretty well I think. Animal Man and Swamp Thing were weirder than the stuff I usually read, but they were still interesting. The titles that I didn't like this week were expected, so I wasn't that disappointed. The biggest disappointment was Static, but I guess my expectations were pretty high since I like Rozum so much. Justice League International was also not as good as I had hoped, but I think that it definitely has possibilities for the future. Most of the first issue was devoted to set-up, so I'll wait until next month to see how I feel. The rest of the comics this week were about what I expected.

This was the week of disillusionment. Although there weren't any titles that I flat out disliked, many titles were not as good as I had hoped. Although I have the same number of issues I liked as Week 1, I'd have to say that overall I liked them less. Green Lantern seemed like just another arc in John's GL run, which is good but didn't blow me out of the water. "Sinestro is a green lantern again" is an interesting storyline, but I expect to see Hal back in the seat pretty soon. Legion Lost and Mr. Terrific were two titles that I was looking forward to the most, but turned out to be just okay.. Superboy, which I expected I would hate, actually turned out to be one of my favorites. Red Lanterns was also better than I had expected. I picked Suicide Squad as my favorite this week because it set up the first mission very well and made me excited for next week. I have high hopes for this book, as the first Suicide Squad was one of my favorite comics. However, I know that not everyone can write the Squad as well as Ostrander (since the second Suicide Squad volume is one of my least favorites...)

I liked most of the comics I read this week, but there were a few disappointments. Having never read anything by Brian Azzarello (except for his Flashpoint mini), I wasn't sure what to expect from Wonder Woman. I'm sorry to say I wasn't blown away. The inclusion of a couple greek gods was interesting, but I feel like they were focused on so much that we really didn't learn anything about WW in what is supposed to be her introductory issue. I liked most of "Red Hood" except for the new characterization of Starfire. The fact that she doesn't remember Dick Grayson or any of her time with the Titans is pretty insulting to the character and her fans. We were told that although there would be changes to the characters, they were going "back to basics" and would essentially be the same. I don't think Starfire is... On the flip side: Green Lantern Corps is an excellent introduction to John Stewart and Guy Gardner and sets up the story to follow. Batman does a good job of showing regular readers that the status quo will be maintained, but also setting us up with a cliffhanger. I wasn't really expecting much from Birds of Prey, but was pleasantly surprised. I was a little annoyed that Captain Atom now seems to have Firestorm's powers, but the story was still interesting.

I liked the five books I picked this week a lot, but they all had the same problem: not much happened. They were excellent introductions and first issues, and made me anxious to read next week. All-Star Western and Savage Hawkman were better than I expected. Superman, Firestorm and Dark Knight weren't as good as I expected. I Vampire looked interesting, but I wished they had given more basic info about how vampires work in the DCU. They don't die with sunlight and they can shapeshift into anything, WTF? Teen Titans was pretty much what I had expected from the various interviews and articles I had read. Essentially just a fresh look at the four main characters. None of them are associated with their adult counterparts anymore, but it doesn't seem to take away from the story yet.

Action Comics #1 - Grant Morrison and Rags Morales 
 
Not a lot of detail is given here, so it's hard to decide how excited I am for this one. The cover is a little silly: showing Superman wearing the practical jeans and sneakers, but still wearing the cape? If they were trying to go with the Superboy jeans and t-shirt look, they might as well have gone all the way. Considering his costume on the cover of Superman #1, I don't think its a big deal, just pointing it out. Other than that, there's not a lot to say on this yet. It's really annoying that they are restarting the numbering, but I'm sure they'll switch it back once they hook their new readers. Grant Morrison is cool, so I'll be interested to see what he has in store for Superman.
 
Superman #1 - George Perez and Jesus Merino
 
I know George Perez has done a lot of art, but I'm not familiar with his writing, so I can't draw much from that. Not much detail given here either except for that this will be a Superman book... so yeah.

Supergirl #1 - Michael Green, Mike Johnson and Mahmud Asrar
 
This one caught my interest. I liked Green's work on Superman/Batman, Smallville and Heroes, so I know he can write. The line that caught my interest was that Supergirl had none of Superman's affection for the people of Earth. This was played at in stories like Amazons Attack and New Krypton, but it will be interesting to see how this is handled in her solo series. I think the costume is good, looks more Kryptonian which probably fits with her new storyline better.
 
Superboy #1 - Scott Lobdell, R.B. Silva and Rob Lean
 
The initial reaction people had to this was "Superboy's a robot now?" It certainly looks that way from the cover, but they also mention "Kryptonian and human DNA" in the description, so maybe he is not THAT far off from the Superboy we all know and love (The Superboy on the cover of Teen Titans doesn't look like a robot..). It looks like the "Young Justice" superheroes are starting over, so it will be interesting to see if the Death and Return of Superman is retconned, as well as Superboy's relationship with Superman and his earth parents. All in all, I am only mildly interested in this one.
 
UPDATE (6/13): The description of the book now mentions that Superboy is a clone, so maybe the machines are just used to grow the clone? Since they appear to be starting over, the first issue will probably see Superboy's escape from wherever he is being kept.

Stormwatch #1 - Paul Cornell and Miguel Sepulveda
 
I have to admit, I'm looking forward to this one. I'm probably one of the few people who liked Stormwatch more before it turned into the Authority. I don't foresee Authority happening in the DCU anytime soon since the whole point of that book was that Apollo, Midnighter and the others were so much more powerful than the rest of the world. I'll be interested to see how they are handled now that they are just a drop in a bucketful of powerful heroes on Earth. I'm also wondering who will be included in the "surprising new roster". Is it too much to hope for some characters from Shadow Cabinet? probably... I'm surprised to see J'onn pop up here. I was really hoping that he would be a member of the JLA, but I guess that's not the case. In my head, J'onn is sort of a big friendly giant who does notcondone the kind of violence that became common in the Stormwatch line. I guess we'll see if that has changed...

All-Star Western #1 - Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Moritat
 
It's interesting that the name of this book was changed from Jonah Hex to All-Star Western, yet it still appears to star Jonah Hex. I love Hex, but I hope that we will see some of DC's other wide range of western heroes in this book. Otherwise, appears to simply be a continuation of the current series (which isn't a bad thing as far as I'm concerned)
 
Deathstroke #1 - Kyle Higgins, Joe Bennett and Art Thibert
 
I think Deathstroke is a cool character if handled properly. I don't know anything about the writer, so this series could go either way. It looks like there will be a lot of "guys with guns" comics coming out in this release. Where Blackhawks and Sgt. Rock are war and All-Star Western is western, I hope that Deathstroke will continue to interact with the rest of the superhero community in his book. He's already proven he can hold his own against the biggest heroes in DC, so it would be anticlimactic if his book was about him taking contracts on anything less than superheroes and supervillains.
 
Grifter #1 - Nathan Edmondson, CAFU and BIT
 
In my mind, Grifter is the most iconic character from the Wildstorm universe. I'm not sure why... It looks like his book will have him battling Daemonites? If that's the case, I hope it only lasts for a couple issues before he moves on to something else. I imagine Grifter in my head as a drifter. In Wildstorm, he had a hand in everything from government ops in Team 7 to gladitorial combat with the Coda to superheroics and space-age warfare with the Wildcats. I'd like to see Grifter make his way through the DC universe to see what kind of trouble he can get into.
 
OMAC #1 - Dan DiDio, Keith Giffen and Scott Koblish
 
Hm... not really interested. I was not a big fan of Didio's run on the Outsiders, and the OMAC concept has never really interested me. This run looks like a rip off of the Hulk.
 
Suicide Squad #1 - Adam Glass and Marco Rudy
 
This was on my list of series I wanted to return. The original run of Suicide Squad by Ostrander was one of my favorite comics of all time. I really liked how it took some very one-dimensional, underused characters and gave them interesting and unique personalities. We had the opportunity to dive into the minds of many DC heroes and villains who did not see the world in black and white. Of course, there is always the possibility that this will suck (can we talk about Suicide Squad vol. 2?), but I'm holding out hope! Harley's redesign is interesting.. I also see Suicide Squad vet Deadshot has returned to the fold. I wonder if they will acknowledge the fact that he just shot Amanda Waller for trying to recruit him and said he would never join again. Probably not. I guess at this point we don't even know that Waller will be involved in this version of the squad. Only time will tell.
 
Blue Beetle #1 - Tony Bedard and Ig Guara
 
This is another series that I wanted to see return after the revamp. I think Blue Beetle and Static have the potential to become very popular with young readers, so I'm glad to see they are getting their own series again. I like Bedard, but hopefully he will keep the same lighthearted tone that Rogers maintained in the original run.
