a Team Divided 0

Synopsis After the events of last issue, the team struggles to gather their wits. Can they remain friendly? How can they reconcile?  The Good  I don't want to sound like a broken record but Charlie's artwork is always spot on. This is the only black and white comic I read but I don't even know the difference. Enough detail in each panel to give you what you get in any other comic.   This plot wraps up the events in last issue and then transitions into the next issue. Much to look forward to in t...

The Squad Gets Fat? 0

Synopsis The Super Hero Squad is on the hunt for more fractals. When they find one they meet the blob and have a bit of a role reversal. The Heroes turn into blobs and the Blob turns in to a health nut.   The Good   Not much to report here. I guess the art is on par with the rest of the series and you can't expect much change here...The other good thing is that I'm glad I pre-ordered this book because I didn't pay full price :)  The Bad  Every story in this book. The heroes and the Blob switchin...

Battle Royal 0

Synopsis  This brings a close to the World War Hulks story line. I wasn't around for the entire ride but caught the last few issues from Hulk and The Incredible Hulk. I haven't been a fan of the Hulk but these last issues may have turned me into a fan. If they keep up with this much action, I may have to add this to my weekly pull list. The Good  This goes without saying ... the art by Ed McGuinness! His photo-realistic pencils and the detail work by Mark Farmer make this book some serious eye c...

Lex at the helm? 0

Synopsis This is the first ever Action Comics issue I've ever read. From what I remember Action Comics was supposed to be about Superman, right? I'm not complaining about the lack of Kal-El in the issue I am merely saying I was surprised. Apparently I have jumped in the middle of an arc but it may be worth following further--and maybe going back to the beginning. Will Supes  join at some point? I don't know if I can take a Lex only series....The Good  The art wasn't bad and it made the issue mor...

I'm Out! 0

Synopsis  Barry is going to be arrested for a crime he didn't commit--yet (Minority Report-style). The cops from the future (the Rogues) come to take him down. One of the Rogues feels bad for Barry and gives him inside information. Barry does a Matrix-style rescue of helicopter occupants and does the boogey around exploding boomerangs.  The Good  It is hard to dismiss Manapul's artwork. I really like it but, sorry, it doesn't make up for the story. I really like Manapul and what he's done for th...

More Skinner? 0

SynopsisThe first "arc" comes to an end in this issue. Perl gets her revenge and Skinner (in a co-feature) makes his presence known. If I'm not mistaken, this is the last issue where Stephen King is involved--I could be wrong. So far on this series, so good. Is it me or is this an over-sized issue? It seems like this book is a bit on the heavy side. The GoodThe battles in the main story. The new age vampires vs. old school vamps in their home. It was a battle royal and I loved every minute of it....

Soon to be attack of the zombies! 0

Synopsis  We get a little back story of where this "queen" comes from, a creature (unknown what it is) who I'll call a "hedgehog" gets a battlefield promotion, and Hellboy and company are visited by a zombie army. This is the second of three issues of The Storm mini from Dark Horse comics. The Good  Artwork is great. This book definitely has a, for lack of a better term, dark and eerie feel to it.  I have since been converted to Hellboy and BPRD in general and this book is right on par with what...

Blade B.P.R.D Style 0

Synopsis  Baltimore, a vampire killing professional, is going through France trying to find the leader of the vamps. He, begrudgingly, enlists the help of a local to help track down a trail of the vampire horde and heads off to locate the group. The Good  I don't think this has to be said, but the Artwork. Can we expect any different? Art is great in almost anything Mignola is involved with. I'm beginning to think Dark Horse makes careful selection of their artists. I have yet to be let down wit...

Ugh..the Format 0

Synopsis  The 12 characters resurrected during Blackest Night are still investigating why they were brought back and none others. The book still breaks up the characters quests into shorter stories in each issue and jumps back and forth. This one has Martian Manhunter, Deadman, Aquaman, and Firestorm. It is missing Hawkman/Girl ...thank heavens. The Good  I'm really liking what they're doing with the first three I've mentioned above (i.e. Martian Manhunter, Deadman, and Aquaman). I could not care...

Can't Keep a Good Thing Going 0

Synopsis  The Agents of Atlas and 3-D man are on a murder investigation which leads them to many places around the globe. They have to deal with demonic possession, drones, and the injuries of teammates. This book also has an origin story of M-11 which is probably the best part of this book--but it could/should have been a tie-in and not part of this--otherwise--short issue. The Good Artwork is by far the best part of this book. I can't get enough of Gabriel Hardman. His pencils are worth their ...

Keep This Going! 0

Synopsis  The Avengers have to wrestle with demonic possessions to get the Eye of Agamato back. Lots of action in this book which requires teamwork from everybody to get the job done.  The Good  Hands down the artwork! Stuart Immonen has a Gabriel Hardman look to him and that's definitely a good thing. There is hyper detail on everyone and everything in the book. Everyone has realistic facial expressions and seems to be more like a photograph or a motion picture than drawings on a page. I don't ...

Avoid the Preview! 0

Synopsis  Tony, while investigating a thief of his technology, finds himself directly in the middle of a war between Latveria and Transia. While in Transia, Iron Man locates the thief. During his extraction he is confronted by Radioactive Man. An altercation happens between Radioactive man and Iron Man. Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo see the fight and stop to be the heroes. A large fight ensues and they are stopped by a large number of Doombots...       The Good  The writing was pretty good for...

Iron Man vs. Iron Men 0

SynopsisA large battle rages and brings unlikely allies together to defeat a common foe. These comics are getting predictable! The only twist to this plot was Iron Odin who came to save the day.The Good  The art is on par with what you'd expect. However, Tony is in a different suit which I'm not used to. He has a 'V' where his eyebrows are and sometimes this bugged me. I know that Tony has many suits and one for each occasion. I guess I'm just more used to the most commonly portrayed suit on tel...

Hurray! It's Finally Over! 0

Synopsis  Ghost finally gets revenge and winds up bing the hero. Can you say pre-dict-a-ble? I'm glad that this miniseries is finally over and I don't have to suffer through anymore of these video game ripoffs. Yeah, I know I didn't have to buy them all but I pre-order so I already bought 'em before I found out they weren't worth reading. Guess that's the pains of pre-ordering. For all the fans of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, stick to the video game and don't bother with this in-print story. T...

Just when you think it couldn't get better 0

SnyopsisThe Walking Dead has reached milestone issue #75. Wow, I can now say that this is the longest consecutive run I've followed in my comic reading history. This issue is definitely picking up where the last left off and Rick has raised the stakes--again. Let the battle begin!  The Good I only have 1,000 words to describe the entire review and 999 could be spend in this section. This was a fantastic issue as nothing can ever be peaceful around Rick and company. With the cliffhanger at the en...

10,000 Leagues Underwater 0

SynopsisThe B.P.R.D hires an 'ol seadawg to transport Abe Sapien into international waters. They are in search of an ancient artifact in a sunken submarine at the bottom of the Russian ocean. This issue gives a brief history of where the artifact came from and why it's important to recover....but I'll bet you don't see <enter unpredictable event> coming. You'll just have to read it to see what I'm talking about. The Good Uh...everything? Can I stop here? The art is great and what is to be ...

Off to a slow start 0

SynopsisThe Sith are attacking Jedi into extermination. They attack the Jedi Temple in Coruscant and it is destroyed. The Republic and some of the Jedi retaliate against orders, the peace treaty, and agreed upon cease fire between sides. The GoodThe artwork is worth mentioning. The pencils, inks, and colors really bring the mediocre story to life. There is plenty of detail in each panel and the colors bring a realistic quality to the story. It almost seems like you're watching a movie as opposed...

Another great issue! 0

Synopsis  Now that General Hume has risen from his coffin, he is in full-force search mode for his "lost gun". He gathers his henchmen and zombies to make his first attack on Drake Sinclair, Billjohn O'Henry, and Becky unsuccessfully.  The Good  The artwork is nothing to be afraid of and shouldn't be taken lightly. Brian Hurtt knocks this one out of the park and deserves a medal or something for this series. Great job illustrating this series so far and now I don't want this to end. Another grea...

Judge a book by its cover! 0

Synopsis  A mystical gun is now a family heirloom and passed down from father to daughter. It has powers which allow the bearer to see visions of the past. Unknown to the new owner, the gun used to belong to an evil man who has now been exhumed from the grave and is coming to reclaim his possession. The GoodI'm going to have a hard time with this one...not for lack of things to say but to keep from getting verbose. For lack of time and room in this review I will only pick a few of the highlights...

Just when I started liking this book... 0

SynopsisTony is recruiting people into Stark Resilient to help commercialize repulsor technology as an energy source. He hires three noobs for the project, speaks with the HAMMER girls, meets Detroit Steel again, and hangs out with war machine. The GoodAs usual Fraction does not disappoint. The plot is progressing fairly well as Tony rebuilds his company and relationships with his friends post-mindwipe. Too bad that he can't be at odds with Justin Hammer but you get the daughters--a close second...

Off to church we go... 0

Synopsis  Another good issue as they build for something bigger. I know there are a lot of trade waiters on this book so I won't spoil any plot. Again, you get a sense that something big is about to happen in the storyline. With the cliffhanger at the end of the issue it makes you wonder if you can trust anybody. Great art, good use of foreshadowing (again) and lots to look forward to in the next few issues. The GoodI feel like a broken record on the good stuff for this title. The art is always ...

Storm the editors! 0

Synopsis  Another great issue by Super Hero Squad! These issues are definitely for all-ages but who says adults can't enjoy them? Each of these issues have three separate stories in them. Sometimes they're intertwined into a larger plot and sometimes they're not. This is one of those times when they're tied together--It's these I enjoy most.  The best part was that they were obviously throwing some inside editor/publisher vs. creator jokes in that last story. The Good  Great story! The last two ...

Iron Man...an onion? 0

Synopsis  Another Iron Man on-going? I already subscribe to Invincible Iron Man but heard good things about this one, so I thought I'd give it a try. I have to admit, I'm not that familiar with Van Lente's work so I'm just getting acquainted with his writing style on this issue. Overall, this was a good issue for three reasons: First, it's a super-sized issue which contains a reprint of Tales of Suspense #39 (Iron Man's first appearance). Second, there are a lot of cameo appearances. Finally,  e...

Deal with Diabloess 0

Synopsis  Ah...another Deadpool book, can I take it? Actually I was fairly impressed with this book. I most definitely cannot take anymore Deadpool books in continuity. This one is a slight departure from that and features Satana this time around. I have been getting these issues off-and-on and only when they catch my eye.The Good  Art and story. I don't know much about Satana but I'm glad that I got this issue. Shes smokin' (literally and figuratively) and Wade cannot get enough of her, so much...

Toy-splosion 0

Synopsis  I've never been a huge FF fan but Hickman has been keeping my interest. Uncle Johnny takes the kids to the toy store for a birthday present while Reed stays behind to teach science class. The GoodThe art in this book is excellent. Minute detail has been put on each of the panels. I especially like when the fight scene breaks out in the toy store and the Legos go flying around the store. You can see that each block was carefully drawn and detailed. Wonder how long it took them to draw t...

Corps vs Lobo 0

Synopsis  A brief appearance of the Spectre at the beginning then on to the meat and potatoes where Carol, Hal, Sinestro, and Atrocitus join forces to fight Lobo. Oh, and a dumb co-feature story of Dex-Starrr's origin The GoodI could care less about Atrocitus and Lobo. Since they were there most of the story I wasn't impressed. I wish there were more to The Spectre's appearance, I guess this is some foreshadowing on what's to come in future issues. It was good to see Hal and Carol interacting po...

Vampire on the run 0

Synopsis  Perl meets up with a friend who turns on her. Perl and her boyfriend flee from the Eurpoean vampires. We also get a co-feature which is a short history of Skinner's first days as a vampire  The Good  Artwork is one well worth the $ for this issue. It reminds me of a Jonah Hex book as it's a western and seems to have some of the same "rough" look as the early issues of Jonah Hex. I'm not much of a western fan but I'm really digging this series thus far. The plot draws you in enough to f...

The Ghost in the Bottle 0

Synopsis  Another great issue in this series. We're getting toward the end of this volume and learning more about the mysteries of the Ghost Projekt. Five of six canisters have been located and the last has been released! What will the ghost do to the people of Russia? The Good   Again, art is amazing! I will be sad to get a break from Rolston's artwork.  I can't get enough of the cartooney look of Rolston's art. I need to go and brush up on more of his work (Queen & Country). This is great ...

Ghost on the Ice 0

Synopsis  Ghost Projekt continues with another great issue in the series. Will Haley is still deep in the trenches investigating weapons of mass destruction in Russia. Those who have been part of the Ghost Projekt are continually surfacing dead and dismembered. Needing to get to the bottom of the search, Will and Anya struggle to find who is responsible. The GoodArt, does this really have to be mentioned? Steve Rolston's art is great and goes without saying the best part of this series. This is ...

Expect the Unexpected 0

Synopsis  After the wake of the Blackest Night, the Alpha-Lanterns are struggling to keep their power and to break off from the Guardian's control. In that quest for power they are attempting to recruit other lanterns into their fold by force. The GoodThe art is pretty good. Great detail in each panel and I'm liking the new artist on the book. I also liked the plot in this issue. I didn't see the ending coming and was caught by surprise. I am getting to like a John centered book as I'm used to a...

Namora - The Savior of the Sea 1

SynopsisGreat story, art, and teaser for the new Atlas volume by Marvel. Namora saves a sinking Russian submarine, locates a lost Atlantean tribe, and finds Imperius Rex all in one issue. There was lots going on in this issue too bad it was short lived! The GoodHands down the art was the best part of this book. I have to say it has a certain Gabriel Hardman look to it ... but that's a good thing. Namora was... very appealing... The story was good as well. From reading the other reviews on this i...

Captain Comeback ... With a Better Plot? 0

SynopsisBlah. That's about it....blah. Not much happens in this issue except someone escapes from prison and the Rogues from the future go and try to pull a Minority Report on Barry. Nothing original happening on this issue and it seems to be filler. I have to say I haven't been a Flash fan. My first real exposure to Barry or the Flash was Flash: Rebirth, so I don't really know how significant all these characters are, maybe that has something to do with the lack of excitement? The GoodFrancis M...

The Un-United Nations 1

SynopsisSpider-Man and the Fantastic Four join forces to stop a fight between Namor and Dr. Doom? Really? That's it? The strangest part of this is that this is a "1 of 4" series. The story is already wrapped up and there wasn't the infamous cliffhanger at the end making your wait for the next issue in the series. This title could easily have been a one-shot.  The GoodThe part I enjoyed most in this book is the attempt at humor with Human Torch and Spidey. They teased each other and pulled a fast...

The Bourne X-Files, Russian-style 0

SynopsisI saw this issue in the previews catalog and thought the write-up sounded good so I took the plunge. Boy did I get lucky on this title! I have never picked up a book published by Oni Press, nor had I heard of Joe Harris, or even didn't recognize the name of Steve Rolston. The solicitation said something about espionage, creepy stuff, and Russia--all three qualities that I look for in a title so I decided to give this a try. I recommend this book by all means possible! The GoodStory and a...

Two Unlikely Allies 0

SynopsisTwo teams rush to solve a riddle, are double-crossed, and wind up allying themselves to defeat a common foe. Sound familiar? This is exactly what this issue is about, they've only changed the cast. The one good thing about this series is the moral story in each issue. The GoodThis issue was cheap, got it from the dollar bin at my LCS.   The BadD-List characters. I have only heard of one of the villains--The Riddler. I guess you've got to learn about these characters somehow but to throw ...

Dead Man (Now) Walking 0

SynopsisWhoa! I didn't see that coming! Great plot twist at the end. This issue made up for most of the shortcomings of the last issue (however minor they were). This is the issue you've been waiting for in this arc. I am most definitely anticipating the next issue to be a classic. Bring it on!   The GoodHands down is the plot. Don't do it Lord Voldemort! 0

Synopsis   Great introduction to the most anticipated arc of this series. Does this mean The Gauntlet is coming to an end? I haven't read Kravens Last Hunt so I'm not 100% up to speed on this hype. I have to say, however, that this is off to a good start and has me hooked already with a few caveats.  The Good  The story. Great plot elements which leads up to the voodoo climax at the end of the issue. This issue is also oversized due to a co-feature on the history of Kraven the Hunter--more on th...

Just a Walk in the Park 0

SynopsisThis issue is one story split into three separate viewpoints. It is well put together and fun to read--yes I know this is supposed to be a kids book! The GoodI hate to say this (as I mention it in all my reviews--well almost) the Art. Super Hero Squad-ish art reminds me of the good 'ol days of Saturday morning cartoons. The good news is you don't have to read these on Saturday to enjoy them! I like the hard-line of the pencils and the colors add extra "environment" to each panel. I also ...

Dead Will Not Rise (hopefully into another volume) 0

Synopsis  Many flashbacks into Ghost's past. He is methodically locating and executing or torturing people who have wronged him. He still remains bound and held hostage inside of an elementary school room.  The Good  The good part about this series is that this is the  penultimate issue of the volume. Only one more to suffer through...phew! The BadI have a hard time with this artwork. It's not horrible but I can say that I don't like it's style. I also don't get the plot very much and have no co...

Synopsis  Agents of Atlas chase and apprehend 3-D man inside their secret lair.  After his apprehension they learn that he's in need of some help investigating his stalkers and murderer of his friend. They offer to help.  The GoodArt. Does this even have to be said? ANYTHING Gabriel Hardman does turns to gold. He is hands-down one of my favorite artist/creators going right now. He's hard to beat.
