I like going back to the roots of the amazons as good guys. I don't mind them not being perfect, but they got pretty downright villainous for a bit there.
As for Diana, I'd go with the best take I've seen of her and play up her archetype as an athlete. The warrior/diplomat thing is always at odds, and an athlete is a good middle ground because they can by physically mighty but still inspirational & inspiring. Famous athletes have used their platforms to promote justice and peace, so I think it's a good fit. I think part of her old backstory was that she won some sort of paradise island mini-olympic games too (that happened to include spear throwing and sword fighting). I forget where I first read that take on her. Probably somewhere on Project Rooftop. But I always liked it.
People write to challenge the powers instead of the personality.
Of course they do. What's the point of Superman having powers if he's not going to use them or show them off?
This is a common thing I've noticed when people suggest ideas for challenging Superman - put him in a situation where his powers don't matter! So instead, Superman just ends up like Reed Richards, except without even the stretching powers, mind-powering his way through everything.
Which then begs the question, if that's the best you can come up with for Superman, then what's the point of him having powers in the first damn place?
The problem is his powers are no longer unique from so many spinoffs. So when you ask the question, "what makes him unique and interesting?" you can't say "because he can fly."
