@KainScion: I am not talking about Christianity, I mean way before that. When people were starting to come together. It helped them explain the world before science existed and it also helped them feel connected. So one tribe worships these gods and HEY that one does too! They can feel like one people and maybe work together. Mind you that time has long long passed and it now does more to drive people apart. The Church did kinda help bring Europe together as well.

See that brainwashing was good at the start to get people to form a society.

I always think about that. Why were Zeus and etc wrong but god is right? There were tons of religions in the past and they have all failed, what makes yours any better? I also do think of future religions that will replace them one day but hope there are none.

Religion did indeed at one time serve a purpose. In the past it helped get society to where it is today. It helped people settle and become civilized. But it no longer has a purpose, science is here as the rightful heir to explaining the world. Now religion only harms. it makes people ignorant of facts, hateful to others and mean. So many wars have been started over religion that could have been avoided. There would be a lot more peace in the Middle East without it too. People would stop being intolerant to gays on religious grounds. All those scape goats would disappear and the real reasons would pop up. The riches of the Middle East for the crusades, people wanting land and oil now and people just being hateful bigots to gays.

As for any "good" religion does? That is the worst of it all. It makes people delusional and ignorant. Instead of facing the fact that life just ends and there is no big space monster to protect them, they cloak themselves in a false sense of security. They believe a big dad is looking out for them so they don't have to look at the endless abyss of nothing there really is. People want to feel loved and protected even if there is nothing actually there to do it. Faith is just a word used by people as an excuse to believe the unbelievable.

I won't point out all the bad that "religion" has brought to the world - human beings are what we are - but I do feel compelled to point out the obvious. God does not exist. The Bible and Koran and similar texts are nothing but compilations of legends blown out of proportion, erroneously told as feats of the supernatural. A compilation of tales to add to the many other myths out there like Zeus and Odin and Ganesh.

Time to move on.
