Ive been really wanting to read SOME kind of X-Men comic for a while now. They're what got me into comics I the 90's (the cartoon and reading Legacy) but I've been out of the X loop for a while. I've been trying to get into Uncanny and Legacy and even the new generic X-Men book. But there are just WAY too many characters, back stories, etc. to keep track of. I've tried just wiki'ing what I don't know but I spend more time in the wiki then in actual books. I started checking into Astonishing (and from what I can tell) it seems to be outside of current X-canon (am I wrong?) but then I see the new issues have the Regenesis banner. Does that mean Astonishing ties into all the other books or is it just a banner they're putting on EVERY X-book regardless of its a part of the event or not? So long story short - is Astonishing (or any othter book) free of the long, convoluted X-history and worth reading?
I used to be SO hung up on continuity but the new 52 has actually allowed me to let go. Your example of Captain America was perfect. While reading Spider Island and seeing Cap was a giant spider I just said to myself - "this is just Cap in Spiderman's world" and Bucky is Cap in the Secret Avengers world, etc.
To me each title bring it's own continuity. As long as things stay continuous WITHIN each book I'm totally cool with characters doing other things in other books. They all still exist in the same universe (and same city in some cases) but each story is taking place in it's own time.
Thankfully I found all the volumes at my LCS for a decent price but Cataclysm seems like it will never be under $35. Here's hoping it gets a reprint too. I'd be willing to drop money on the NML reprints if they add new issues...
