The Weird World of Aurora (Comic Ads #6)

No Caption Provided
Comic Ads are more than just the mountain of Hostess Ads we know and love. Over the years, many a company has used one page comic ads to shill their products in the pages of comic books! So I thought I'd do a list series that showcases those ads, and shows you what issues I've found them in. To me, these are as much a part of comics history as any superhero, and I love 'em for the nostalgia they bring. I hope they do the same for you. Enjoy.

Aurora Products Corporation brought us eight different snap together model kits, that included Vampirella, Frankenstein, Dr. Deadly, a Girl Victim, and four kits of lab equipment. Keeping in mind that 1971 was still a very conservative time, this ad is pretty shocking. In fact, I'd speculate that they were pushing the boundaries of shock, for what could be done in a mainstream comic at the time.

This is also funny, putting Vampirella and Frankenstein in the roles of flunkies to Dr. Deadly. Frankenstein chuckles, Vampirella is creeped out that Girl Victim might be turned into a fly, the boy at the end is gleefully snapping Girl Victim together (or is he creepily pulling her apart?) and the ad guys even take a stab at New York, the city they're headquartered in. If this were done today, it would have probably been done with photographs of the actual toys, in the style of Twisted Toyfare Theatre.

I had never seen this ad before I started flipping through comics, specifically looking for comic ads. So I think this is a pretty cool find.
