The Adventures of Sgt. Shark! (Comic Ads #8)
| Comic Ads are more than just the mountain of Hostess Ads we know and love. Over the years, many a company has used one page comic ads to shill their products in the pages of comic books! So I thought I'd do a list series that showcases those ads, and shows you what issues I've found them in. To me, these are as much a part of comics history as any superhero, and I love 'em for the nostalgia they bring. I hope they do the same for you. Enjoy. |
Despite the quality of the art, I actually like this ad quite a bit. It has a lot going on. It introduces two characters (Sgt. Shark and his parrot, Gaff), a cool location (Tiger Island), a tug at your patriotic heartstrings (a U.S. Navy sub is in danger!), a display of the power granted by the shark's tooth pendant (he beats a shark and moves the sub), and a hint at further stories (a Navy captain with a pendant? Where could that lead?).
I'm not one to be taken in by such a blatant ad, but I have a tiny collection of comics related trinkets, and I find myself wishing I had one of these to add to it. I didn't just miss one opportunity, either! There's two order coupons at the bottom! One for me, and one to give to a friend! Oh well, maybe it's on e-bay.
