How I Got The Tip Of My Life (Comic Ads #27)
| Comic Ads are more than just the mountain of Hostess Ads we know and love. Over the years, many a company has used one page comic ads to shill their products in the pages of comic books! So I thought I'd do a list series that showcases those ads, and shows you what issues I've found them in. To me, these are as much a part of comics history as any superhero, and I love 'em for the nostalgia they bring. I hope they do the same for you. Enjoy. |
Correspondence schools must have been all the rage in the 1970's, and that probably had a lot to do with the Vietnam War, which started in 1954, and wouldn't end until 1975. The USA had a lot of displaced veterans by the end of the conflict, who weren't necessarily welcomed home when they returned from The 'Nam. To look at comic ads, you would think that everyone's answer was to get folks to learn a trade, as there were numerous trade schools that advertised in comics. Universal Schools is just another one of those correspondence schools, and in this ad from 1972, they're hawking the field of accident investigation.
Ted, stuck at the "same old lousy job" at the plant, runs into Jim, who has hit the big time of accident investigation, and is all too happy to tell Jim how he can get in on it too.
...I couldn't help it though- the more I read this, the more it seemed like a made man telling his friend how to get into the mob, codenamed "Universal Schools." Especially since "accident investigation" was in bold every time he said it- like it was a codeword for something else. Seriously, try substituting "leg breaking" for "accident investigation," and tell me if it doesn't still make sense. ...Better yet, I'll just add it to the right.
When you think about it though, the field of accident investigation probably was booming. After all, someone had to figure out what happened to the guys who were found Out Cold!
