History
Origin
Piotr Nicolaevich Rasputin grew up on his family's farm in Russia. Piotr, his older brother Mikhail Rasputin, and younger sister Illyana Rasputin were also mutants. Piotr's ability to transform his body into organic steel allowed him to work around the farm and help out neighbors with ease. It should be noted that the Rasputin family was NOT related in any way to the fraudulent starets, or "Man Of God," Grigorii Efimovich Rasputin, who became one of the court favorites of Tsar Nicolai II through taking advantage of Tsarevich Alexei Nicolaevich Romanov's hemophilia.
Joining the X-Men
One day Professor Charles Xavier came to the Russian farm to ask Piotr to join his new team of mutants, the X-Men. Xavier was recruiting a new team to rescue the original team being held on the sentient island Krakoa. As Colossus, Piotr decided to remain in the United States to fight along side the X-Men. Piotr had a hard time adapting to the different American way of life, which differed from his Russian roots, but was an asset to his team.
Peter frequently wrote letters home. Shortly after joining the X-Men, Miss Locke kidnapped many of the team's loved ones to use as hostages in order to force the X-Men to aid her in freeing her employer, Arcade, from captivity by one of Doctor Doom's robots. Among her captives was Colossus' younger sister Illyana. Arcade brainwashed Colossus into becoming "The Proletarian," and he battled the other X-Men until they countered the brainwashing. The X-Men freed Illyana and she stayed with her brother Peter at Xavier's Mansion.
When the X-Men fought the evil mutant Proteus, Colossus thought he had killed Proteus on coming into contact with his metal skin. During his early career with the X-Men, Peter started what was arguably his most significant relationship with fellow X-Man Shadowcat. Although they were only together as a couple for a short while, the relationship provided the foundation of a deep and lasting friendship.
During the Dark Phoenix Saga, Colossus was forced to battle the Dark Phoenix. He punched the Dark Phoenix, temporarily stopping the Phoenix so that Cyclops could kill her. He then battled the Imperial Guard again, in an attempt to save Phoenix's life.
During a battle with the Brotherhood, Colossus was later turned into soild metal, but was returned to normalcy by the Morlock Healer. He soon ended his relationship with Kitty Pryde, and then battled the Juggernaut one-on-one.
During the Mutant Massacre, Colossus became heavily involved in the X-Men's efforts to save the Morlocks from the Marauders. When Kitty was severely injured by Harpoon, Peter gave in to his rage and snapped Riptide's neck. He tried to fight through his pain and anger, but eventually passed out from previous wounds inflicted by Riptide. Magneto, with the aid of Shadowcat, used his powers to heal Peter's armored form, but the process left him paralyzed. He was sent to Muir Island along with Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde and the surviving Morlocks to recuperate. Over time, Colossus' wounds healed, but he could only retain his human form.
When he saw the X-Men in Dallas during the "The Fall of the Mutants", he had his sister teleport him to the battle, where he became a wild card, as Destiny had not seen him in her vision of the X-Men's demise. When the team decided to sacrifice themselves to stop the Adversary, Colossus went along, dying to save the world. Like the rest of the X-Men, he was revived by Roma and decided to let the world believe him dead while he and the X-Men worked out of an Australian base.
Following the Inferno event, Illyana went back to live with their parents in Russia.
After the X-Men began falling apart with Rogue vanishing, Wolverine taking off, Longshot quitting, and Storm apparently killed, Psylocke telepathically prodded the remaining three to disband and travel through the Siege Perilous to gain new lives. Peter emerged in New York with no memory of his past life, inventing a new persona for himself as 'Peter Nicholas', where he quickly became a successful artist. He battled the Genoshan Magistrates. He began having visions of a beautiful model, who turned out to be Callisto transformed by Masque. The two were kidnapped by the Morlocks, though Peter had no memory of his time with the X-Men. He resumed his armored form and defeated Masque. He was saved by Forge, Banshee, and Jean Grey, who decided it better that he live his new life rather than be dragged back into theirs. Unfortunately, Peter was psychically dominated by the Shadow King and sent to hunt down Stevie Hunter and Charles Xavier. Xavier had no choice but to destroy the Peter Nicholas persona to break the Shadow King's hold. Colossus joined in the battle of the Muir Island Saga, and rejoined the X-Men as a member of Storm's Gold Strike Force.
Not long after, Peter's parents were slain and Illyana kidnapped by the Russian government, who hoped to genetically evolve Illyana to the point where she would have the use of her powers again, to defeat the mutant known as the Soul Skinner. Colossus, with the help of the X-Men, saved Illyana and brought her back to the Mansion.
The X-Men went to another dimension where they discovered Colossus' brother, Mikhail. Mikhail returned to Earth with the X-Men and became the leader of the Morlocks and transported them to another world.
Later, Illyana became an early victim of the Legacy Virus and died from it. The loss of his immediate family, as well as brain damage that forced him to remain in armored form, caused Colossus to rethink his position with the X-Men and join Magneto and his Acolytes, who had offered him an alternative to the X-Men's pacifist philosophy of peaceful mutant/human coexistence. Colossus would eventually recover from the brain damage, but decided to remain with the Acolytes of his own volition, hoping he could temper the Acolytes' extremist methods with what he had learned from Professor Xavier.
Joining Excalibur
After Magneto was left brain-dead and the space station was destroyed by Holocaust, Colossus joined his former love and teammate Kitty Pryde, with the team, Excalibur. Colossus accepted Kitty's new life with Peter Wisdom and chose to become a member of Excalibur.Excalibur eventually disbanded, and Colossus returned with Nightcrawler and Shadowcat to the X-Men.
The Death of Colossus
Using notes from the recently murdered Moira MacTaggert, Beast, claimed to have found the cure for the Legacy Virus. Unfortunately, it could only be made airborne with the death of its first user. Colossus sacrificed himself by injecting himself with the cure. Kitty Pryde took his ashes back to Russia to be strewn on his native soil.
Astonishing X-Men
In reality, after the X-Men truly believed he was dead, it turned out that Piotr did not die. His body was being held by an alien, named Ord. Ord explained that Colossus was only dead by "human" standards, and he had discovered that it was a mutant from Earth that would end up destroying his world. His goal was to experiment on Colossus's body. He revived him and, after discovering the Legacy Virus in his body, had him cured. It was Kitty who found him later and freed Piotr. Colossus returned to the X-Men and to Kitty. He and Wolverine also performed their move, the Fastball Special.
After a fight with Danger, Cassandra Nova used Emma to launch a psychic attack against the Astonishing X-Men. Colossus battles Sebastian Shaw. Colossus is taken out quite quickly, but is later awoken by the student, Blindfold, and goes to the basement to see Cyclops shoot the psychic illusions.
Nova also put Kitty under an illusion in her mind, where Piotr and Kitty had a baby, Michael. The X-Men, including Piotr, took the baby away from Kitty. Kitty was incredibly angry and threatened Piotr by phasing an axe between his head, but Piotr then told her where they're son was. This was revealed to be a plan by Nova to get Kitty to get her body (Stuff) from a cage in the basement. We also found out that Colossus is the X-Man destined to destroy the Breakworld.
When Nova was defeated, SWORD teleported the X-Men onto their ship, and took them to the Breakworld to stop the Breakworld from firing a missile at Earth. After having lots of sex with Kitty, Cyclops sets up the final mission. Cyclops, Emma and Colossus make their way to the core of the Breakworld, and if the others' plan fails, he rips out the core. It is then revealed to Colossus in the core that Aghanne was behind the plans.
During this time, Colossus also fought the Hulk when he came to the Institute to ask Professor X what his choice would have been. Through the battle his arms were badly bent, but these were fixed with the combined help of laser surgery (to heat his metal arms and allow them to bend) and Elixir (to heal).
In Messiah Complex, Colossus was part of the team that tracked the Marauders and tried to find the baby. He then took part in the final battle on Muir Island. After the X-Men disbanded, but in truth Cyclops only had the team on a much needed break, Colossus journeyed to Europe with Nightcrawler and Wolverine. After a stop in Germany, the guys arrive in Russia, where Colossus puts flowers on his parents grave, and they have a heart-to-heart and Colossus talks about how he "lost" the love of his life (another hint to Kitty possibly being dead or someone gone). They were then captured by the Red Room, while trying to leave on the train from Russia. Their captors are trying to find out why was all their mutant agents have been depowered and Colossus has not. A battle then occurred between the X-Men and the Russian government with Omega Red and after defeating them, They got a call from Cyclops that the X-Men are building a new base in San Francisco and that they should help.
When Piotr was in a Sentinel art gallery, he fought Magneto, whose powers are somehow restored, but is actually his costume that replicates his original powers. Still mourning for the lost of Kitty, many of the X-Men tried to cheer him up, but to no avail as he as not ready to move on. A young girl approaches Colossus and ask him if he'll save Kitty. Colossus has a moment and looses himself in his thoughts about Katherine Pryde. The girl quickly snaps him back to reality, when she points to her kitten stuck in a tree. Piotr grabs the tree and shakes the cat out for the little girl.
Colossus later helped Cannonball and Armor fight against the invading Skrulls in San Francisco.

Powers
In armored form, Colossus's strength and stamina are enhanced to a superhuman degree. While in this state he also does not require food, water or air to sustain himself and can withstand high impact assaults as well as extreme temperature variations. Despite this near-invulnerability, however, it is still possible to injure him, and if knocked unconscious, Colossus reverts to his human form. In his metal form, Colossus bleeds pure energy when injured, and he has no organic organs that can be damaged.
It is also worth noting that Colossus only uses these powers in violent situations with the greatest of reluctance. Instead, he feels it is his responsibility to use them for the betterment of others rather than for combat.
