Yeah, riiight... 2

Cable kills Cap. The Avengers are the enemies of the world. Cable is back... How come I am not surprised at any of this? The Good:The Art. I've always liked Ed McGuinness' style. It just seems like modern, fun and light comic book art. Nothing spectacularly awesome or groundbreaking, but the man knows what he does.I like the X that is stylized as crosshairs on the cover. The Bad:There are so many things wrong with this book. I called it. It's neither surprising, not exciting nor fun nor unpredicta...

Answers to a question never asked 1

Michonne and Abraham head out to town to gather some more supplies, where they meet Jesus. Really. They do.The GoodThe book once again manages to surprise its readers by answering a question that was most likely never asked. And that question is "What happened to the rest of the world?" Well, not the entire world, but it's been so long since something resembling our world or even a society has popped up, we've forgotten that Rick and Carl and Michonne and everyone were just regular people once. ...

Boring beginning, good ending 6

In yet another Batman book, Bruce Wayne does things. In fact, his life is in mortal danger, because the Court of Owls is after him. Said Court is a group of black-clad, cape-wearing, masked people who kill people. This does not please The Batman. The GoodThe Court of Owls: They're a really intriguing group. Or maybe just one guy. Either way, I'm interested to see where this story is going... after finishing it.Gadgetry: Batman is using high tech gadgets. Him being the tech-hero of the DCU, he sho...

Tomorrow is boring - a review by a journalist 0

The old must make way for the new. This time, the Daily Planet gets it. Not as a paper, but as a building. They're getting a brand new skyscraper, with at least four helipads. Oh, and Superman battles a talking fireball, while being slightly miffed about something. The Good:They have a Superman title that's actually called Superman. I guess that was inevitable. The aspect that the Daily Planet is now part of a huge media corporation. And if that doesn't go anywhere, it's just like in real life. No...

I'm so glad to see this 2

Teenage metahumans appear everywhere. But while some might have good intentions, they can do more damage than good. That’s why Red Robin – Batman’s former sidekick – has to step up and try to knock some sense into the super-powered teens. The Good:It’s so good to see this. The Teen Titans are finally interesting again. The two heroes we get to meet in this issue – Wonder Girl and Red Robin – are different. Where the Titans pre-boot were basically the same character, there’s a thief who doesn’t wa...

Not so Fishy 1

Aquaman is getting his long-overdue revamp. And he gets to do all things we like: Heroics, action, love, good deeds. Well, everything but one thing: He doesn’t talk to fish. The Good:Aquaman is finally a hero again. He’s a heroic character and he doesn’t act all “outrageous” or snobbish. He’s just a guy who can survive the immense pressure underwater and help out. This is shown off beautifully by this book. The whole “Nobody’s Hero”-aspect is unique and new and pretty cool. I hope they stick with ...

Brilliant? Not yet. Exciting? Oh yes. 0

When a guy who has taken the semester of university returns to the dorms, he gets involved in a project his friends have been working on: They’re inventing superpowers. The Good:The premise is very, very interesting. The fact that the book is not set in the regular Marvel universes makes it all the more exciting, because we have absolutely no idea what will happen. And that’s precisely why I’ll keep reading it.Mark Bagley really outdoes himself on this book. I usually like his art, but here I’ve ...

I ache for something to happen 1

Miles Morales is the new Spider-Man. That’s it for this issue. The Good:They’re taking their time setting the story and everything. They want to do it right and they’re doing it right. This is very much a story about a human being and other human beings around him.The first wall-crawling was very well done on an artistic level. I really like it when comic books do the occasional cinematographic sequence. And here, it worked very well. The Bad:Nothing happens. We get a ton of exposition. We get a t...

Wait… what? No, really. What!? 1

In a world where bestiality is normal and the dominant sexuality, the vegisexuals are rioting. In the middle of those riots, Officer Jok meets Brin. Brin is a mineralsexual. From thereon out, a what I think should be tragic love story ensues. The Good:The setting: There’s something amazing about this book. Nothing is explained. We’re left to assume that this book is set in the near future, given the tech we see. But how did humanity end up having partners for life in dogs? Why? Nothing is explain...

This is how you do a sexy book 10

They’re young, they’re amazingly skilled, they’re wanted fugitives and/or thrillseekers, they can take on armies and middle eastern countries and they’re so in over their heads. The Good:Rocafort: Normally, I’d call this “Art”, but Kenneth Rocafort does more than just comic book art. He does art-art. I would eat his art if it tasted as nice as it looks.Sexy: This is how you do a sexy book. You don’t need every female ever to run around in her underwear, but you need to have her act the part as we...

Insults my womanhood... and I'm male! 5

In this “sexy and daring” book, Selina Kyle talks like a caveman, there are boobs everywhere, same with panties and there’s supposed to be a story in there somewhere. The Good:Art: Yet another very nice-looking issue. Even though there are fanservice-shots everywhere. There’s impressive stuff on the artistic side here and there. But for every nice panel, you get ten “Here’s a bra!”-panels. Most impressive was this one. It’s emotionally hard-hitting and not your typical “Oh my goodness”-shot, even...

Guest Star in her own book... again 7

A god has a hidden agenda, a woman has a child that is not yet around, neither is the father of said god and in the middle of it all, there’s Wonder Woman. The Good:Bizarre: This book is odd enough to keep me interested. It’s got a lot of weird characters in it who look weird and do weird things and then there’s a horse’s head cut off and all that. Solely based on the ideas in this book, I’ll give it another shot. The book is also surprisingly brutal.Supporting Cast: There are a lot of characters...

He's back! 4

With Dick Grayson being back to his Nightwing identity, things look very good for him. He’s fighting crime successfully, having fun at the circus his parents were killed… and then he’s being attacked by an assassin who has a personal grievance with Mister Grayson. The Good:Nightwing: I’m convinced that Dick Grayson is Nightwing. Not Batman. Regardless of how good he was as Batman and how awesome a Robin he was, Nightwing is his own thing. He was the first and he’s the only Nightwing. Nightwing is...

No more heels 8

Even before the Birds of Prey are officially a team, a party or parties of unknown are out to kill them. But the new Birds won’t have any of that. The Good:High Heels: This book impresses me first and foremost with the complete lack of sexy costumes. I greatly appreciate that. Black Canary’s costume still looks like Black Canary’s costume, but this time, it actually looks like it could hold up in fight. Well done.Nei Ruffino: Nei Ruffino colours this book. I am madly in love with her work and I c...

The Channelling of the Bendis 0

With the world officially hating and hunting mutants, those who are still left outside of captivity are running scared. They hide, they lie, they cheat, they try to rebuild in some cases. The Good:Realism: It's nice to see that the news that mutants were man-made has not only shaken the mutant community but also people everywhere. There are riots and widespread fear. However, I find it kind of hard to see why people are rioting about something that doesn't affect them at all. Sure, the president ...

Meh-mon Knights 0

Etrigan and Xanadu and some others face off against invading hordes of invaders. The Good:Fun: The book is funny. It has some legitimately hilarious stuff in it. Vandal Savage going "My cod says that that's no lady!" is very clever while being silly at the same time.Language I: The speech mostly reads as if it's something that's not happening in this day. Sure, I can't tell whether or not people actually talked like this back in the day, but the speech puts enough distance between today's languag...

Slade Wilson is a mercenary. He can be hired to do anything. And it seems as if he's gotten old enough that he accepts to be partnered up with young and up-and-coming mercenaries because he's too old to do the jobs himself. Slade, however, disagrees. The Good:Cover: Look at that cover by Simon Bisley. It is simply awesome, even though it has precious little to do with the actual comic book. Sure, Slade kills people. But this is just generic hero pose... albeit a very good one.Art: Joe Bennett is ...

Same old, same old 1

Bruce Wayne is back as the one and only Batman. Damian Wayne is Robin. They're the new dynamic duo in Gotham. However, Batman Inc. in Russia is having trouble with nobody. The Good:Nobody: The new villain looks very menacing. And he's apparently a killer that can turn invisible. How cool is that then?Banter: Batman and Robin are very different. Damian is very cold and distanced, while Batman is strangely emotional. This is definitely a side of the characters worth exploring.Intro: Batman was very...

Calmest Rage Ever 6

With Krona dead of something that was supposed to be retconned out, Atrocitus needs something else to rage at. He finds it.The GoodArt: Ed Benes does a good job. It's very nice to look at.Side-characters: It's nice to see that at least one of the other corps that were introduced as the new and amazing and awesome characters that are totally here to stay finally get a bit more spotlight. During Blackest Night - which technically didn't happen anymore - the Corps became throwaway characters.Nose: ...

Words. Lots of them. 6

Miles Morales, extremely lucky black/hispanic teen is the new, sensational character find of 2011. This is his debut... if it weren't for his debut that happened a while ago in a different book. The GoodHumanity: All the characters feel human in this one. Miles seems to be a genuine person, his dad seems to be a genuine person and so does his uncle. His mother is not quite as present as you'd like her to be, but there are quite probably going to be more issues.Reality: This book feels as if it's ...

Swamp Who? 0

Animals start dying. Alec Holland is asked for help, but the formerly-dead-but-gotten-better botanist has demons of his own to battle. And there appear to be zombies.  The Good: The Villain: It's certainly a very creepy villain, the former Mastodon who has a knack for having people break their own necks. So that's good and it's a sign of great creativity. Also, the fact that you don't see the villain clearly is quite something and adds to his spookiness. The Hero: Alec Holland is supposed to be ...

This is war. 0

Joe Rock is a soldier. He has stopped counting the number of tours he's done in the warzone. He, however, frequently disobeys orders and is only kept on the armed forces because he's that good. But now, a man comes along that just might change Joe Rock's career.  The Good: Perspective: I enjoy the look this book sheds on the new DC Universe. Sure, we've had comic books starring soldiers before, but they were kept separate from the supervillains up until now. This is not too surprising, since one...

That bad, that quick 6

So OMAC rampages. That's it.  The Good The Look: O.M.A.C. certainly looks rather interesting. The blue skin, the sort-of-mohawk and the shiny elements on his design make him interesting to look at. The sparks from his - for lack of a better word - mane make me instantly go "Wow, what an interesting character" because he doesn't look anything like any of the other characters. I greatly appreciate DC going out on a limb and daring new things. O.M.A.C. is not a sure bestseller like Batman or Superm...

A comic is more than just a story 0

Hawk and Dove fight scifi cyborg zombies and try to find their place in this new world. Also, Deadman.  The Good The story is yet another angle of supehero life. Before the reboot, the sole motivation for heroes to do good was "I do good things because doing good things is good." This was most evident with the Teen Titans of days gone by. Here, we have two people stuck working together because some higher power tells them to. One is not happy with the arrangement at all, the other is "Comfortabl...

What a reboot! 0

Metropolis is a city, ruled by insider trading and slave-like labour. One man stands against all that. His name is Superman and he doesn't like the way things are done.  The Good Superman finally has a character again. In this one, Superman is not a blank canvas to push whatever political agenda the writer feels the need to push. He also isn't about some lame "We're all equal"-thing, from the looks of it. He's for the people. The city was alright, built upon injustices that had many be alright, ...

Does the Justice League have a Battlecry? 7

Batman is chasing an alien or a monster. Green Lantern, a cocky, self-absorbed hero, helps him. Together, they investigate this seemingly intergalactic mystery and they decide to go ask other aliens on Earth.  The Good Adventure: The book finally has a sense of adventure again. It's not just a bunch of heroes who have known each other for what seems millennia and just sit about in their big tower or satellite or cave and wait for the next alien so that they may go and punch it in the face. So wh...

The code is "Howdy" 0

When a race of concquering aliens decides to invade the earth of the WIld West, it's up to warring cowboys and indians to save Earth.  The Good: The concept. It's highly original. It's very well done. It's really good. All in all, I am very impressed by the story and the concept of the book. The aliens, the cowboys and the natives distinct ways of talking. It makes their respective factions and their entire world much more believable. Even though this book is wildly historically inaccurate, it f...

Could use some more architecture 0

James Gordon Junior has returned. And with him, the doubt in his family: Is he still a psychopath or is he - as he claims - reformed? And why does the Joker claim to not be behind crimes that fit his modus operandi perfectly?  The Good: The Cover. It's spectacular. It's easily the best thing about the issue. It's creative, it's haunting and it really pushes the medium of comic book art. They should make a poster of that cover. Is it me or are the recent Batman stories much more "down to earth"? ...

Same old, same old 4

Subject Zero from the first issue is now suddenly a villain and Kal, aka. Subject One is... a kid. In this flashbacked tale, we get to see how Kal gained and lost friends.  The Good: The Art: It's pretty cool. You can tell that Subject Zero is huge. Unlike with Cyborg a couple issues ago where you had to have the Flash explain that Cyborg is more buff, it's absolutely clear that Subject Zero is huge and indestructible. It's great art for a nice book that has to convey a lot of different freak-fa...

Just don't think 0

Optimus Prime, Megatron and all the other giant robots return to bash each others' heads in some more. This time, our favourite truck has to fight a firetruck and another truck.  The Good There is an amazing lot of stuff in this film that just looks cool. The cars look cool, the clothes look cool, Rosie Huntington's cleavage looks cool. There are cool people in this. Sam Witwicky is awesome, but the world fails to see it. And that gives him the vibe of being an actual human being. I can totally ...

Emperor Aquaman is still hellbent on killing the Amazons. He mounts an attack on England which has now been raised out of the water and is up there in the sky. And while the poor sods who get to try to kill Terra are climbing a mountain that is half a mile high, Aquaman remembers his roots.  The Good The Art: It's nice, it's solid, it's cool to look at. In contrast to the main book, they actually do manage to make a clear distinction between the star of this book and his regular universe counter...

To Mrrr or not to Mrrr 0

We're already past the halfway point of Flashpoint. The Flash, Cyborg and Batman are now on a mission to get the Justice League of the regular DCU back together. They're getting their first recruit: Superman. The Man of Steel, however, is hidden away in a government bunker.  The Good The Pacing: The story flows nicely. The exposition about the role of Cyborg in this universe is nicely handled and neatly snuck in between important plot points. This gives it a feeling of purpose, like it is meant ...

Quite a punchline 2

The Joker has Dent's kids. Jim Gordon has the intel. Oracle has given it to him. Batman doesn't know. The Dark Knight of Vengeance just might be too late.  The Good: The Joker: I greatly appreciate any kind of re-imagining of the Joker, because the regular Joker has been broken. This is because every writer out there thought at one point that he was the one to write the next big, epic and character-defining Joker-story. Every writer seemed to be hellbent on writing a Batman vs. Joker story. And ...

Being super kind of sucks 4

Neil Sinclair. Soldier, spiritual man... Superman? After volunteering for something that might be called Project Superman, which is never named that, Sinclair gains superpowers and decides to do good for the glorious United States.  The Good: The character design: I really like Sinclair's look. The costume is also rather nice, even though he's not really wearing a costume. And his hair is really nice to look at for absolutely no good reason. I just like Sinclair's look. The characterization: The...

And now... what now? 0

Rick and the survivors of the town are trying to rebiuld their lives, training for the things to come and Rick is worrying about Carl.   The Good: Character development: I like the fact that - after a lot of pointless hacking and slashing in the previous issues - Kirkman is taking the time to give his characters a bit of time to have a nice chat. The spreadpage: The last two pages (well, three if you want to be technical about it) are spectacular. The contrast between Rick's hopefulness and his ...

He's not really... dead, isn't he? 0

This is it. Spidey is making his stand. His final stand against... well, everyone. And with a title like this, are you surprised he's dead?  The Good:  Pretty much the only thing I really like about this issue is the fact that the actual death is not overblown and doesn't take up half the issue. There's nothing worse than listening to people whine about what they regret and everything in life while they're bleeding out and have received a headshot. Humans don't work that way. So yeah, Spidey dyi...

Whose side are you on, anyway? 0

Michael Desai is The Outsider, the morally corrupt and hard-to-pinpoint multi-billionnaire in the world of Flashpoint. However, that's all we'll learn of him.  The Good It's an entertaining read. Michael Desai is not obviously good or bad. And with him being a completely new character, we don't know what to expect. So that makes this really good. Throughout the entire book, we don't know what his agenda is, whose side he's on and what his goals are. We know he's got little to no hesitation to ki...

He's not a monkey, he's an ape 0

Grodd has won. Africa is his. Every living being on the entire continent is under his rule. Still, the gorilla with the psychic powers is frustrated. He wants more. He wants fame.  The Good The art. Ig Guara - who has an awesome name, by the way - delivers very good art. Grodd looks menacing and frustrated at the same time. Given the fact that Guara is probably used to drawing humans and does that way more often than he draws gorillas in cars with helmets on who happen to have the ape-equivalent...

Too little, too late 1

Some Indian Demon is loose. He's obviously beaten all the Titans but the newest one and Beast Boy. It's up to the motly crew of two to save the day.  The Good My first thought when the issue popped up ontop of my pile was "Oh man, now I have to read this again". I had no motivation to do it. Absolutely none. But when I did, I found myself pleasantly surprised. JT Krul delivers a readable story. It's far from interesting and it's nowhere near as engaging as Krul would like it to be, but it's not ...

The grand finale is upon us. Selena and Clint must take their last stand against millions of Infected and the entire US Army  The Good I do love a series with an ending. There's something very satisfying about seeing your favourite characters that you've grown fond of over a period of time get closure. They actually appear to acknowledge the existence of 28 Weeks Later. Very nicely done, I must say. It's not like the movie is the best, but the thing is that they're not erasing previously establi...
