That's not to mention other stuff out there that is also either currently published (Justice League 3000), was published (pre-DCnU depictions), or in other media like movies or shows. We get more evil Kryptonians, morally void Supermen, mind-controlled Supermen, copycat Anti-Supermen, and alternate dimension universe shattering versions of Superman.

So why so many evil Supermen? You'd think we'd get tired of this story.

My answer: It is the only story that makes sense.

When you have a character that is virtually the most powerful creature on the planet, you run into two main problems. First you can't give him many (easy to write) threats. You typically end up with a villain that is way too weak to fight Superman, so for the sake of the story Superman is significantly weakened, or you have world destroying force. What's another thing that can take on Superman? Well, Superman of course!

Here is another way to put it. We know Superman isn't perfect, but he isn't far, he's one step under perfect. So as far as threats go, you can't send an infinite power against him, cause that's perfect. So you at best can send, one under perfect, someone like Superman.

The next reason why Superman is so commonly depicted with the negative, way more so than other hero's, is because we love seeing what happens when good becomes corrupted, when innocence is no more. NAAUGHT!

The reason why that logic simply doesn't work is because that is the case with almost all our heroes, or at least the non-anti-heroes. But Superman still gets the brunt of it. And we can reason with it saying that he is the most powerful and the ultimate symbol for good, but I just can't by it, and I'll say why in a second.

Before that let me say what the real second reason is. It's because it is the only one that makes sense. We have an alien raised in the United States taught mid-western southern values, who grew up to protect the world. And although there are many positive attributes to southern values, that isn't enough to say Superman turned out the way he did because of that. This guy is the world's strongest guy, doesn't feel physical pain, eats out of habit, gets energy from the Sun, doesn't need a job but has one anyway that pays better than most Americans actually make, let alone the world, has his own fortress, prison, and zoo, and managed to woo Wonder Woman while having Lois Lane benched for when it doesn't work out, is the last of his kind...conveniently with others of his kind. His life was so good that when they rebooted his story, they killed off the Kents because they needed Superman to feel some kind of pain. So, how can this guy really empathize with the struggles of humanity. We are literally ants to him.

So that guy that I just described, now has miraculously decided to protect us. Now under what standards? He can use the morals that his family taught him, but what if they go against the law? I mean, I hardly doubt he has a search warrant for his X-Ray vision, nor is imprisonment or death sentence without trial also legal.

We can have a Superman that follows American law. However if the law doesn't protect the people, is he just idly going to stand down because it is the law? No, we know he doesn't because he dabbles in this stuff all the time and at his own fancy. Plus the law isn't perfect, it's constantly changing to better improve and serve our society (at least I hope...). So you see, the next logical step because of those blurred lines always being crossed, is that Superman goes bad (if he is to continue crime fighting that is). Any other story really asks the reader to temporarily turn off any logical part of their mind to believe it, which we can only do to some degree. If you don't believe me, try reading Ann Nocenti's Catwoman.

Here is the kicker that should rightfully tick off any Superman fans who think it still somehow possible that an objectively good Superman is possible. There is always a foil to this evil Superman. And let me give you a hint, if Superman is essentially perfection, then what isn't he. He isn't human. However there is a hero out there that is human. One that worked hard to get all his abilities, instead of being born with them. One that really know suffering, instead of being too young to remember it. One that pushes himself every day, instead of tanning in the sun. Remember that ultimate symbol for good that I mentioned earlier?!?! Oh ya, you know where I am going to with this....na na na na na na....

Batman is the yin to Superman's yang. So while it is easy to see Superman go down a bad path, (and if you can't see that, pick up any comic about Superman, you have a high chance of of witnessing it yourself), you hardly see what if Batman was bad stories. And in a weird twist in fate, in almost all the bad Superman stories, it is Batman is who is fighting to oppose him. Even when we got the Crime Syndicate, Ultraman was pure evil while Owlman had some human in him trying to save Nightwing. You'd think these two best friends wouldn't butt head so often...

With that said, I am curious to see where Geoff Johns takes us with Ulysses. Will he be a good Superman, or will he follow the trend and be yet another bad version of Superman?

Remember this movie is also coming out. A sequel to a movie where Pa Kent's values are seemingly off, Superman destroys Metropolis, and kills in his first public outing. No wonder they brought in Batman...and WW and everyone else...

While this Superman saves the world in a terrorizing way ultimately leading him to work for Brother Eye in the Future's End...dun dun dun!!! Though Lois Lane (his not girlfriend) suspects him to not be Clark.

Future's End also promises us a fight between Apollo and Superman...one that Apollo supposedly wins. Though don't worry about him losing control though. We've seen him attack Stormwatch, and yes his Batman-esque boyfriend, Midnighter, was the one to stop him.

The (Weak) Argument Against Diversification

So lots of people get upset when a character’s race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or what have you is changed, even if it doesn’t change anything core to the character. I mean, let’s be real, Batman’s whiteness isn’t really ever brought up, not even in comparison to non-white characters. It’s this odd need to preserve consistency of characters created in a supposedly more racist times, which in turn preserves the racism of that time. So, while I think people are justified in being upset with Tim Drake, (Red) Robin's, changes because the changes totally change the character, including his personality, the People who are upset with Alan Scott being gay are unusually quiet about him being changed to a young CEO.

But beyond the fact that Heimdall’s character stays completely intact in the the Thor movies, many people like to say that it is historically inaccurate, Norse Gods are white! They say that someone’s race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, takes them them out of a fictional story about fictional people.

What And Why?

So here are what some characters would look like if they were, you know, a bit more accurate. And just so you all know, I am doing this for two main reasons. The first is to show the logical flaw in saying historical accuracy is needed to keep someone a white man. And second, to restate the reason why diversity is important, because the more we see all types of people as good guys and superheroes, the more we actually see these real people as good people...real people. And please post some if you come up with any!

Hope this gave you a thing or two to think about! And yes, it's a DC heavy list, but hey, gotta stick with what I know!

I'm going to start this by saying that Batman is a notorious loner that hangs out with A LOT of people. He has had a multitude of sidekicks, been on many teams, and started many of his own, but shockingly enough his direct family has been lacking in diversity.

Out of his direct family we have all the Robins which were white carbon copies of each other (features at least). They tried to make Jason Todd blond but retconed it. The only person out of the Robins that has any form of diversity is Damian Wayne who is biracial. He is half white and half whatever Talia is. But unfortunately DC hasn't realized the potential of that character to play on it, there aren't many multi-ethnic characters out there since people like to make "racial pairs" like Storm and Black Panther, or Black Canary and Green Arrow (and you thought it was just a coincidence they were both blonde, out of the fewer blonde characters out there). Damian Wayne has been treated and drawn like a white person so for all intensive purposes he is white.

Then you have the Batgirls, Barbara who is a red head (which I wish was an example of diversity but red headed females are REALLY common in comics and cartoons), Stephanie who is the only Blonde character in the bat family so she gets points for that (I don't know much of the character and I don't know if she has dealt with any stereotyping due to her hair but I doubt it). And then you have Cassie! The first real step to any diversity, she is Half-Chinese and Half-White. She is almost Damian 1.0, but we actually were aware of her heritage. Unfortunately DC's editorial staff didn't like her tried to ruin her and now got rid of her. They also did the same with Stephanie brown too...

Outside of his family Batman's main team has always been the Justice League, and if I ask you to name who are the members of the Justice League here are the names that might come up: Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Hawkgirl (the TV show had a lot of influence), and if you have been reading DCnU Cyborg. My point being that you either have to be white to really be on the team for a long time. Multiple attempts have been made to diversify the team the two most famous is for JL cartoon by using John Stewart and now with Cyborg but overall the trend is the character needs to be white (btw Martian Manhunter's alter ego is a white guy). It actually gets even worse with the Justice League because its made up of elitists. You have your billionaires (Batman and Green Arrow), your Royalty (Wonder Woman, and Aquaman), and your superpowers and I mean they are the MOST powerful just by power set alone (Superman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, and the Flash) who also happen to be connected to the military/police in some way (except for Superman).

So where have people tried to enter diversity into Batman's world? By his extended teams.

The first real major attempt was the Outsiders which had Black Lightning (he's black), Katana (can you guess that she's japanese), Geo-Force (ok this one isn't obvious, eastern european), Metamorpho (he's a rainbow of colors!), and Halo (who is this naive girl, can you guess what her hair color is). This is a much nobler attempt to diversify Batman's world but the problem is why not introduce someone directly into his family. They have to be extended and from another country. This is repeated in JLI and Batman Inc. All attempts to give us a black Batman, or a brazilian team mate. But thats the thing, they are all from other countries, they don't hail from gotham (other than Black Lightning) but even so they don't work with him in Gotham. They are separate worlds essentially. He has his white gotham, and diverse groups outside of the country.

Has the Bat Family made any headway into diversity. I would argue yes, and definitely in the gender and sexuality front. Batman's world has been very good at including strong independent women. At a time there were even more females (Oracle, Huntress, and Batgirl) than males (Nightwing and Robin) that were part of the family. Oracle becoming a major player in all DC, and I would say is the only Bat character that didn't remain in the shadows of Batman. Thats pretty impressive and empowering to women. And on top of that she has been the number one Superhero on a wheel chair for the past 2 decades (and totally outshining Professor X). And since I am at it with people that have disabilities Batman also had a genius mute named Harold working with him. You also have a lot of growth in the Lesbian front with Batwoman (who was ironically introduced to fight claims of Batman's homosexuality, brilliant move DC!), Maggie Sawyer, and Renee Montoya. And best part is I don't feel that their sexuality rules their character so I definitely applaud for that. Though you definitely see how their sexuality plays a role and affects their life.

There is a lot of growth even in the sphere of sexuality though. Gay and bisexual characters are practically non existant, so here's to hoping Harper Row and her brother develop and grow.

Why is this a problem?

1. I am actually going to make a list for this cause there are a multitude of reasons. The first is simple representation and subliminal messaging. Without decent representation of different groups then you get subliminal messaging of the represented groups superiority. A very real example is Superman was first introduced to represent white america. Many of his inicial villains were foreign, and what did he fight for again, Truth, Justice, and The American Way. So there are problems when you constantly present rich white people as the saviors. It might sound ridiculous but the affects of subliminal messaging is powerful, when all you read of black people in the comics are is that they are poor people that need saving, or thugs that rape and beat innocent people (never the crime boss though). It sends this subliminal message that black people are inferior and need white people to save and protect them, that or they are dangerous and avoid them. Plus it ends the perpetuation that Americans are white and anyone else is foreign. Last time I checked everyone tracks their heritage from another country, except Native Americans who are practically extinct (if a group of people can be extinct).

2. Here is an economic reason, if you create characters that have different ethnicities, then people of those ethnicities might start being interested in reading that character. I mean Wonder Woman was an icon for women, and attracted many female readers. Logic doesn't fail that if you create and Arab superhero that more Arabs would start reading it (especially cause the hype around Arab superheroes is usually so dramatic).

3. Batman deals with characters with many psychological issues, heroes and villains. There is a hugely untapped area of stories that are all around diversity and the psychological issues that surround it. A variety of identity issues come up from growing up as a Black person in a white society, constantly having to straighten your hair, dress like a white person, talk like a white person, simply to fit in. I won't go into a rant about it but drug laws highly target African Americans. Latino and Asian-Americans are constantly being used for cheap labor. The issue of being bi racial where people perceive you to be one thing when really you are both. Transgender issues where people are simply just uncomfortable being around you. The double sided discrimination Bi-Sexuals get from both the Homo and Hetero sexual communities. The fact that no matter how many generations your family has been in America Asian's will always be viewed as Asians and not Americans. And the list goes on, and all of it is very juicy untapped character stories.

Now I am not saying diversity for diversities sake is a good thing, in fact that can lead to one note boring characters. But entering diverse characters into the Bat Family can lead to very intriguing story lines. I mean one of my favorite stories that I read was actually how this Arab-American who has the powers of storm is in a plane that is about to fall. He attempts to save the plane but at the same time as Power Girl and Batman, and everything thinks he was the one bringing down the plane. Dealing with his fears, and and what happened to him was REALLY interesting and REALLY real. And it was different from everything else I have read regarding Batman. We've seen the mugging, we've seen the bank robberies, we've seen the murders (all blue collar crimes btw...) but we don't ever see that! And thats what I want!

So after looking at Diamond comics top 500 comics sold in 2012 here are some interesting observations

Out of the top 10 graphic novels only 2 DC graphic novels were in it, both were Batman

Out of the top 20 comics only 1 DC comic was in the top, and you guessed it it was Batman

In fact Batman was in all top selling comics for DC until number 58.

Top 20 of all DC comics made up up just Batman and Justice League (both had Batman in it)

Out of Dc's Top 100, Batman was in 76% of those comics

I did however include some DotF tie ins which didn't actually have Batman in it but they only made up 6% of the list...which still puts Batman at 70%

Something else to notice many of the other comics that didn't have Batman that made the list were numbers 5 and 6 which means they were still coming down from the New 52 launch, the only exceptions being Green Lantern and Action Comics.

So if people are still curious why DC has so many Batman books, why they are constantly launching new Batman shows, why DCUAOM feature Batman over a third of the time, or why he appears in other titles, well its simply because he SELLS!!!
