Biography
There is nothing special about Algernon. He is merely a Ghoul, one who feeds on the dead. A denizen of the Dreaming, Algernon would visit the waking world for vittles. This would have stayed as it was for millennia if The Dreamer had not interfered. But he came, and he sought Kadath. One of Algernon's brethren, Pickman, agreed to help him...and the Ghouls did owe the Dreamer a debt. They called upon the Night Gaunts and were called to war...but little did they know they opposed the Crawling Chaos itself.
Cast from the sky, most of the Ghouls died instantly. The remainders were set upon by the Moon Toads, cultists of Hastur (whose name may not be spoken). Their numbers diminished, opposed by the Crawling Chaos, the Ghouls were decimated. Algernon was one of the few to survive. He walks the Earth, fleeing the agents of the Chaos who may still want revenge. His pack is gone. He is so lonely.
[Note: Based on the ghouls of H.P. Lovecraft's mythos]
Intelligence and Speech
Ghouls are bizarre creatures...one minute they may seem to understand every word, the next they are howling at the moon. In general, Ghouls can understand human speech, but only transfigured Ghouls (ones that were originally human, but changed under their own volition) can speak in a human tongue. Ghouls do have their own language though.
Algernon is largely animalistic, though when he's eaten he appears to become more intelligent. The hungrier he gets, the more likely he is to be absolutely feral.
