Comics I've Read - 2013
Every comic I've read this year...including almost every one I'd ever read before this year, because I reread what I had when I decided to get back into comics.

The beauty of reading the first two issues together is that I get to split my "review" between them. Last time I focused on the writing (and in this issue…). Now I want to talk about the gorgeous and unique art style of this book. Doyle & Bellaire deliver a fresh, clean look to Wood's tale, which is particularly important given the action inherent in a book starring a world-famous athlete. Wasn't ready for this issue to be over -- and I already dread the fact that this is only a six-issue run.
Picked this up due to Babs' recommendation, and am glad I did. As an introduction to Wood, this was perfect: interesting premise, a character I want to know more about, and great control over the exposition. The issue ended in a way that made me need to keep reading, need to know what happens next. Also, the little interview with Wood was nicely insightful. I'm also looking forward to his new X-Men run!
I laughed out loud several times, and was smiling throughout the rest. From the first page I thought it was going to go real dark, but it did not, and I think it was better for it. Some very good exchanges here for sure, and a reminder that this game isn't just going to be a brooding dystopian nightmare.
Gorgeous artwork. But this story is kind of outrageously depressing. I've always viewed the X-Men as a welcoming group that looked out for the less fortunate, but I guess non-mutants aren't part of the initiative. One cold shoulder after another...made me want to wipe away Tandy's tears myself.
As a fan of noir in general, I thought this was a particularly strong mini. Very cool seeing all the nods to canon despite the great liberties taken. Strong argument for the need for heroes (or anti-heroes) willing to use a gun here. Love the twist on power/responsibility this series took.
Overall this was a fun little series with generally very good art (didn't care as much for most of the Storm book's art though). This was my first comic exposure to Black Widow and now the fact that Liu wants to pair her with X-23 makes SO MUCH SENSE.

This was quite a blast, first comic I ever hunted down on eBay. Made me love Squirrel Girl, and featured a cutting commentary on the brutal state of comics.
Check my review. I loved this so much.
Finally, I read the book I'd heard so many talk about. It's funny, it's cool, and perhaps most importantly, it made me happy.

The first volume (covered in three digests) blew me away. I was glad to see that Runaways continued to be great after its hiatus.
First Marvel NOW title I've purchased. I enjoyed it well enough, though it's too early to be sure if I'll love this series as much as I want to.
Technically not "bought," but received. In case you didn't notice, there are many free issues on this list.
Received.
Of all the books I should probably be reading, this is at the top, because I know nothing about Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash, or Cyborg. I know.
Got it for Fixman.
Bought years ago, re-read when I got back into comics.

After reading all the other X-23-centric stuff, this was required reading. Quite a gut-puncher, but I felt it told a very strong story. This short run added something much needed to comics, and I wish there were more books like NYX to cover the less happy side of mutants.
It seemed the best way to get an insight into this controversial series cheaply to just buy the first trade. I loved it, and proceeded to make this part of my monthly pull list.
Borrowed from my brother. Believe the hype.
I just don't like it. I get why people do, but it's too blatantly edgy for my tastes.
I didn't care a whole lot for Liu's run. It had its moments, but missed for me more than it hit (especially reading it almost right on the tail of the two Kyle/Yost minis). This was the weakest of the three volumes.
This will remain the high point of Liu's run for me, trade-wise, if for no other reason than all the things involving Jubilee. I found the whole FF sideplot tedious, however (though Spidey's suit is pretty awesome).
This remains my favorite stand-alone X-23 issue. Laura, under a sicko's blade, finally shows the ability to care for herself. It's brutal.
The only reason I tolerated the Daken cross-over was because it was short. I'll probably never go back and read this issue again. Redeeming point: Tyger is lovely.
That issue where Laura fights a shark. And gambit just kind of exists.
I wonder whether I would have liked this more had I not just read Target X. Liu's take on Laura isn't bad, but it didn't blow me away.
This is pure "vapid," but written and illustrated beautifully.
It's nice. It's different. I'm still not really caring...
Meh.
I REALLY loved this. Only reason I didn't immediately get volume 2 is because I want to have this sitting on my shelf. It's gorgeous, very different, and quite cute.
