@Warlord: Optimus Primal is the leader of the Maximals, the descendants of the Autobots. He named himself after Optimus Prime, in order to honour him. He fought against Megatron (not THE Megatron) and his Predacons (descendants of theDecepticons) during the Beast Wars. He is, arguably, a greater hero than the Transformer from whom he took his name, who he actually saved through a time paradox.

Basically, the Transformers race, in some unspecified period of time after the Great War between the Autobots and the Decepticons, went through "The Great Upgrade", where they took on smaller, more compact robot modes. These robot modes were also capable of assuming more organic alt modes, which after a team of Maximals and Predacons went through a dimensional tear that sent them to pre-human Earth, allowed Optimus and the others to assume "Beast Alt Modes". Optimus assumed the form of a gorilla, and became Optimus Primal.

Watch Beast Wars.  It has 90s computer animation, but it is - quite possibly - the best toy-line-tv show, and is easily the best transformers TV show.

It's out again on DVD.  Buy it, watch it, and love it.

... Optimus Primal is one of the greatest Transformers ever. He was the leader of the Maximals in the Transformers: Beast Wars series - the best Transformers series ever made.
