She Who Serves the Dark Gods (18 pages)

In a secret cavern, the beautiful witch Kareena uses a large enchanted mirror to communicate with the Dark Gods. The evil deities, who have no power in the physical world except over their servants, promise her a boon in exchange for which she must bring Dr. Adam Spektor into their service. Later, Kareena uses a torrential rain storm as a reason to beg a drive from Spektor and his secretary, Lakota Rainflower, and to insinuate herself into Spektor Manor, much to the displeasure of Lakota, especially when she catches Spektor kissing Kareena. As Spektor tries to convince Lakota that all is not as it seems, Kareena slips away from the house leaving behind only a compact mirror.

That night, Spektor's sleep is disturbed by haunting dreams of Kareena. The next day he is distracted in his work and very short with Lakota. He seems to be obsessed with Kareena's mirror. Finally, Spektor tells Lakota that he in fact loves Kareena, and that Lakota can stay as his secretary or leave as she wishes.

The compact mirror magically lures Spektor to sinister Mount Algol where he finds Kareena's secret lair and the beautiful witch waiting for him. She tells the smitten Doctor that they will be married by the Dark Gods and serve them together. The mention of the Dark Gods snaps Spektor back to his senses. Enraged at how he has been controlled and made to hurt Lakota, Spektor regains his own will. The Dark Gods tell Kareena to destroy Spektor since he cannot be subjugated. To this end, Kareena conjures forth Spektor's worst enemies: the living mummy Ra-Ka-Tep, the bestial Mr. Hyde, Baron Tibor, and the Frankenstein monster. The creatures force Spektor to the edge of a bottomless pit, where Lakota appears and tells him that she now serves the dark Gods and has come to finish him.

Spektor calls on his rational mind, and knows that Mr. Hyde is dead, that Baron Tibor, even if he had become evil again, could not venture forth in daylight, and that Lakota would not kill him, no matter how hurt she might be. The figures are all illusions conjured by Kareena, and they vanish when Spektor refuses to believe in them. As punishment for her failure, the Dark Gods take away Kareena's powers of illusion, revealing her to be a repulsive hag. Unable to accept her reality, the witch hurls herself into the bottomless pit.

The angry Dark Gods cause the secret cave to collapse, and Dr. Spektor barely escapes with his life. Rushing back to Spektor Manor, the Doctor is relieved to find that Lakota has not left, and the two join in a loving and forgiving embrace.

    The Pit (7 pages)

In Africa, Simbar, the were-lion, frees some captured lions from their cages. Resuming his human form, Simbar encounters Dave Price, the hunter who had imprisoned the lions. Simbar destroys the man's rifle and warns him to stay away from the lions before returning to the jungle. Price pursues Simbar into the jungle and tries to shoot him with another rifle. Enraged at being attacked, Simbar once again takes on his lion form. However, Simbar falls into a pit that had once been set to snare lions. As Price closes in for the kill, Simbar calls his lion subjects to surround the hunter. In his human form once more, Simbar commands his lions not to harm Price. He then banishes the hunter from the jungle forever.

Notes: Spektor of course first encountered the true versions of his illusory adversaries in earlier issues of The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor: Ra-Ka-Tep the mummy in issue #3, Mr. Hyde in issue #5, Baron Tibor in issue #1, and Frankenstein's monster in issue #6.

The work at hand for Spektor and Lakota is transcribing the notes from one of their encounters with Baron Tibor, either in issue #1 or in issue #8.
