The Night Lakota Died (25 pages)

The story opens on a rainswept funeral as Dr. Adam Spektor and his friends lay to rest the beautiful Lakota Rainflower. As the proceedings draw to a close, Police Inspector Frank Sinke handcuffs Spector and takes him away in the back of a squad car, under arrest for Lakota's murder. On the way downtown, Sinke recounts his reasons for the arrest: a frantic phone call from Lakota, begging the police to get to Spektor Manor "before he kills me;" finding Lakota dying as if from being exposed to a great heat, with a scrawled note on the desk saying "I CAN"T HELP MYSELF" and signed Dr. S----; and Lakota's last word, as Sinke asked who did this to her being "Adam." Sinke theorizes that Spektor had performed some bizarre experiment or conjured some demonic being, resulting in Lakota's death.

Spektor is left alone in a jail cell, but he isn't there for long when a brilliant light and an intense heat enter the cell and burn out through a hole in the cell wall. Spektor escapes through the hole and finds his car waiting for him. Driving, he follows the light to the foot of sinister Mount Algol, where the light stops moving and reveals itself as the super-hero Man of the Atom. Spektor then realizes that Lakota's last word had not been "Adam" but "Atom." The Man of the Atom tells Spektor how he had retired from public heroics and was working for a covert agency when he traced a source of intense radiation to a cave in Mount Algol. But before he can reveal more, the hero is overtaken by an intense pain, and forces Spektor to accompany him into the cave, where they encounter the revivified and beautiful witch Kareena.

Kareena shows Spektor that Lakota is not dead, but had been replaced by a doppelganger in her coffin. Kareena is holding the comatose Lakota prisoner in a bid to force Spektor to give Kareena his love. Spektor finds himself unable to feign affection for the witch, and she tells him how she had lured the Man of the Atom to rescue her from the pit into which she had fallen on their previous encounter (The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor #9). The Dark Gods had restored her youth and powers on the condition that she use her power, combined with that of the Man of the Atom, to bring the Dark Gods back into the real world on the night of the next lunar eclipse.

As Kareena and the Man of the Atom begin the ritual, concentrating their powers on a pool from which the Dark Gods begin to emerge, Spektor grabs the Man of the Atom and forces his arm into the magic pool, which super-heats the water, causing an explosion and resealing the doorway between worlds. In her rage, Kareena switches Lakota with her doppelganger, and destroys the doppelganger body, mening that Lakota herself is now buried alive and suffocating in faraway Graceland Cemetery. The Man of the Atom frees himself from Kareena's will, and points out that he can fly at the speed of light. He races to the cemetery and frees Lakota.

Adam escorts Kareena out of the cave, as she shows remorse for her deeds and expresses her fear of the punishment of the Dark Gods. Outside, Inspector Sinke and the police arrive to re-arrest Spektor. Just in time, the Man of the Atom returns to the scene with the very much alive Lakota Rainflower. Sinke releases Spektor, who promises to explain to Lakota what happened. Later, Spektor has coffee with Lakota, their friends Elliott Kane and Cindy Bask, and a man named Dr. Solar, whom Kane says he believes is no ordinary man. Spektor smiles secretly at the knowledge that Solar is in fact the Man of the Atom.
