A Bullet for Adam (25 pages)

Seeking refuge in a cheap flophouse, Dr. Adam Spektor becomes the wolfman and attacks a thug who had tried to rob him, and is pursued by a torch-wielding mob. As the Spektor beast makes his escape, he is observed by a mysterious figure that has been tracking him. The next morning, Spektor awakens in human form and finds his way to a medieval castle that is somehow standing in the woods in America.

Meanwhile, at Spektor Manor, the Doctor's friends, secretary Lakota Rainflower and psychic Elliott Kane, are discussing a new hope for their runaway lycanthrope. Kane introduces his friend Simbar to Lakota. Simbar possesses the mythic Lobrostone, a fragment of the moon which arrived on earth during the time of the Dark Gods and which can allegedly cure lycanthropy. Kane uses his psychic abilities to locate Dr. Spektor at a medieval castle an eccentric billionaire had had built nearby in the 1920s. Simbar takes on his lion form and heads to the castle, while Lakota and Kane follow in a car.

At the castle, Spektor is settling in for the night, in the hope that the werewolf will not be able to find its way out of the building. Spektor's peace is disturbed, however, by the arrival of Valdemar Van Helsing, supernatural bounty hunter, who has come tracking the werewolf. Van Helsing does not suspect that Spektor is the were-beast, but is sure the creature must be hiding out in the castle. While Van Helsing searches the castle, Spektor takes on his wolf form and attacks the hunter. Van Helsing drives the werewolf off by shooting him in the shoulder with a silver bullet.

As Van Helsing pursues Spektor, he is stopped by Simbar, who frightens the hunter and breaks his rifle. The two were-beasts retreat to the woods and a savage battle ensues. Van Helsing produces a pistol, and is about to shoot both Spektor and Simbar, but is stopped by the arrival of Lakota and Kane, who restrain him. Simbar finally manages to force the Lobrostone into the werewolf's fist, and immediately the beast resumes the form of Dr. Spektor. Spektor's grateful friends embrace him and take him home.

The next morning, Simbar tells Spektor that he is free from the curse of the werewolf as long as he possesses the Lobrostone. As Elliott Kane gives Simbar a lift to the airport, Spektor and Lakota express their hope that one day Simbar will find a cure for his condition, but reflect that until he does his best destiny is in Africa as the Lord of the Lions.
