I've got a great idea for a Nova MOVIE, believe it or not. Or, an Ultimate version Rick, if you like. (The MILLAR Ultimates, not the Jeph Loeb version!) In fact, the whole Cosmic Marvel setting in an Ultimate style, since aliens are still a big government secret in the Ultimates. Its a much more 'space cop' take on the idea, which is what the Nova Corps. was originally intended to be. Then it REALLY DID become a GL rip-off. To be honest, I think GL was also supposed to be in that vein. It basically mirrors Hal's story, except Rick's alien doesn't die, he's just wounded, and needs a tour guide, especially considering he's not supposed to be on Earth (no FTL-travel, after all). Rick helps him track the crook (Drax, proabably, which I'm aware is a rip-off of an Annihilation tie-in book, but it was so cool I'd happily steal from it!) disguise himself, etc., but when reinforcements finally get his distress signal, they vote to kill Rick to keep the episode a secret. However, his 'buddy-cop' can't deny that Rick's good at this, he doesn't really fit in on Earth anyways, and so they deputize him instead. The catch? Rick can never come home again (they fake his death, so he doesn't even say goodbye).
In this version, the Nova Corps. are neck-deep in a cold war b/w the Chitauri (Skrulls) and the Kree. The Xandarian's Nova Corps. were chosen to police the lawless space of the Milky Way, b/c they are officially neutral, but, thanks to diplomatic meddling, they're now required to employ an equal number of Kree and Skrull officers. So, the whole setting is just rife /w political intrigue and crime. Geoff Johns puts a lot of the political intrigue into his run of GL, but he never really played up the 'space cop' idea, but /w 1 or 2 exceptions. Most of the known galaxy regards the Corps. much like Jedi in Dark Horse's Star Wars EU, but w/o the mysticism. What do you think?
