Nate Powell graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 2000. He has written and drawn numerous works in short and long form. Some releases include Please Release and Sounds of Your Name, the latter of which collected older stories.
Most recently, he has been publishing his shorter works and his graphic novels with Top Shelf.
His first graphic novel, Swallow Me Whole was released in July of 2008 to critical acclaim, and went on to win Powell several awards. In 2008, he won The Ignatz Award for "Outstanding Debut," and "Outstanding Artist" in 2009.
Powell was nominated for three Eisner Awards in 2009 for the book including "Best Graphic Novel" and "Best Cartoonist," and won in the category, "Outstanding Graphic Novel." Swallow Me Whole was a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize, and was the first graphic novel to be nominated for the prize in any category since 1992's Maus by Art Spiegelman.
His latest graphic novel, Any Empire, was released by Top Shelf in August 2011, and has been earning strong praise.
