The Thinker (Homages #68)
Homages to Rodin's The Thinker in chronological order. But first, a fascimile of the original from three different angles...
Also known by its original French name Le Penseur, by Auguste Rodin. The original was part of his larger Gates of Hell sculpture in 1880, but the singular statue appeared around 1904. Rodin made or supervised several replicas that are on display around the world, and other castings were made after his death.
The Thinker is often a symbol of philosophy, but considering his origins, I think he is a man reflecting on the bad choices of his lifetime; a man considering his regrets. Whatever the case, this statue has always been sort of a favorite of mine. Honestly though, that might just be because I recall silly uses of it in cartoons. Ah, those were the days.
