The Doom Patrol last edited by YoinkyBoyo on 09/23/21 04:17PM View full history

A mysterious man known only as "the Chief" calls three people who have all escaped certain doom but were left outcasts because of their experiences. Plus, the Chief informs the Doom Patrol of an alien spaceship that has landed on Earth carrying a super-weapon.

In the first chapter of the issue, The Chief brings together a trio of reluctant heroes who each have their own traumatic history: Robotman, Elasti-Girl, and Negative Man. After explaining that he is familiar with each of the three's pasts and why they have hidden away from the world, the Chief shows them that they can do heroic things and rise above their feeling of self-pity by working together. It is also revealed that The Chief was, in fact, the mysterious surgeon who operated on Robotman. The trio of Robotman, Elasti-Girl, and Negative Man then, under the coaxing of The Chief, find and disarm a plastic bomb. Each of the three shows their willingness to participate; Negative Man locates the bomb, Elasti-Girl shrinks down to enter the bomb to disarm it, and Robotman holds the bomb close to shield the blast if it were to detonate.

In the second chapter, the newly formed team races against Chief's old arch enemy, General Immortus, in securing an atomic energy source from the alien ship. Eventually, General Immortus is seemingly killed after he is trapped on the alien ship as it crashes into nearby mountains. At the end of this story, the team is named "Doom Patrol" by the newspapers.

The Team That I Know Is Constantly Doomed 0

I took the time to track down this special issue to commemorate my next milestone, Review #400! Long time readers will likely know, especially with my latest kick, that the Doom Patrol is my favorite superhero team. They've had a wide variety of styles in their 5 series' and are almost always far outside the norm. (Except maybe Vol. 4.... or maybe it was outside the norm of being good? Because its ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE?.... Moving on.) So what better comic to celebrate a milestone than their first...
