While installing a new responsometer, Doctor William Magnus is injured in an explosion that atomizes the Sizzler. The Metal Men operate on Magnus, to remove a piece of shrapnel dangerously close to his heart. While Magnus recovers, Platinum refuses to leave his bedside. The Metal Men nominate Gold to be their leader, in lieu of Magnus. Only Mercury dissents, preferring to be placed in charge himself. Gold leads the Metal Men into the city, to patrol for trouble. In short order, the Metal Men thwart a bank robbery, rescue the occupants caught in a tenement fire, and save a falling man.

Investigating unusual bridge traffic, the Metal Men encounter Chemo. An image of Chemo ruling the Earth beside Platinum plays across Chemo's glassy face. Nothing more needs be said. The Metal Men have received the message. Chemo spews corrosive chemicals at the Metal Men's Jetaway. Lead molds himself into an umbrella to block Chemo's acidic eruptions. Iron slams Lead into Chemo, knocking the chemical horror off the bridge, and into the sea. The damage, however, has been done. Lead is completely corroded.

Gold does the reconstruction work on Lead, usually handled by Magnus. With Lead incapacitated, Gold asks Platinum to accompany the team into battle with Chemo. Platinum refuses, intent on staying by Magnus' side. The Metal Men track Chemo to a burning oil tanker, out in the ocean. Iron dives into the sea, and hammers Chemo into the sea floor, completely burying the chemical juggernaut. Iron, however, sustains heavy damage. Like Lead, Iron's body is also completely corroded. Once more Gold does the repair work on a fellow Metal Man.

Once more Gold pleads with Platinum for her assistance in the fight against Chemo. Once more, Gold is refused. The four remaining Metal Men encounter Chemo scaling the Statue of Liberty. Tin and Nameless convert their bodies into tin powder, a tactic that defeated Chemo in an earlier conflict. Strong winds, however, disperse their bodies. A small amount of their powdered form blinds Chemo, causing the chemical giant to fall, back into the sea. Gold collects Tin and Nameless' remains, and carries them back to the laboratory for repair.

With only Gold and Mercury still standing, Gold again approaches Platinum for aid. Again, Gold is refused. Chemo assaults a nuclear submarine, causing it to roll over in the sea. Fashioning himself into a chain, Gold lashes himself to the Jetaway, and the submarine. With Mercury piloting the Jetaway, the Metal Men are able to right the submarine, and prevent it from sinking. Chemo next severs the oxygen line of a bathysphere. Gold replaces the tubes and cords with his own body, until the bathysphere can be hauled back up to the surface.

Chemo surfaces, and storms a nearby beach. Against Gold's wishes, the hot-headed Mercury singlehandedly engages Chemo. Mercury is blasted into hundreds of globules before he ever gets near Chemo. Gold collects Mercury in a large bucket. Doing so, however, allows Chemo to grab the Jetaway. Gold flies the Jetaway, and Chemo, back to the laboratory, intent on dropping Chemo into the industrial smelter. Unfortunately, the smelter has not been lit. With Chemo closing on Magnus, Platinum finally leaps into the fray. Gold locks Chemo's mouth shut, to keep the chemical giant from venting heat and pressure. Platinum binds the chemical horror. Eventually, the pressure builds up enough within Chemo to cause the monster to explode, destroying him. Magnus finally awakens, as do the fallen Metal Men.
