This is not the same Earth.  The United States was founded not by religious sects but a different breed of human.  When they arrived here they didn't establish democracy but a monarchy favoring their kind above others.  Until a prominent prince is found in a pile of other bodies in an apparent muder/suicide, detective Madison now has the daunting task of to pursue this case under the watchful of his superiors.  He tries cope with the pressures of the case but his growing addiction to pain killers has led him to a laugh gas explosion by a social satarist group.
