Amazingly, Kevin Matchstick survives his jump in front of the subway train. He climbs off the tracks being trailed by a Grackleflint. At the Styx Hotel Casino a shadowy figure is disgusted to learn that Matchstick survived the train. He gives his agents mysterious orders to ramp up their efforts to find the Fisher King. Kevin, rumpled but otherwise unhurt, gets a meal at a nearby restaurant when Mirth the Magician suddenly appears again. Kevin wants questions answered and asks for a place with more privacy .The Mage transports Kevin atop one of the tallest buildings in the city and Kevin freaks out, revealing his crippling fear of heights. Later after teleporting to a quieter area in a park, Kevin learns the answers to all his questions. Mirth tells him that there are five Grackleflints and that they are lieutenants controlled by a greater evil, their father, The Umbra Sprite. They are all part of the eternal struggle between good and evil. Kevin learns that he can't control the power he is gifted with and that it will only arise when the situation demands it.The Mage also tells Kevin there will be those who will join him on his mission against evil . Kevin still in disbelief wants to know why he was chosen, still maintaining that he's not special. The Mage's answer is interrupted by a vision. A young lady who may help Kevin is being attacked by a Grackleflint not far away.
