Lucy Robinson was just an average housewife with marital problems when Tobias Messenger approached her on account of her being a mutant. He offered he a place on his team called the Promise and said their goal was to save the world. Lucy got swept up in the team's crusade and ended up abandoning her family. Every 10 years the Promise would come out of suspended animation for a weeks time to search for new mutants to recruit and to see if the Tobias' vision of an inevitable human and mutant war has yet occurred. It was during these times of consciousness that Lucy would check in on her family which is when she learned that one of her children had died in Vietnam.
X-Men: The Hidden Years
When the Promise chose to take Alex Summers and Lorna Dane by force, Lucy talked Tobias into also taking Warren Worthington III as well. This however was a ruse so that she could rig the two of their sleeping pods to wake them up earlier from their suspended animation. Upon awakening from their much shorter sleep she asked the Angel to fly her to her son's home where she would confront him about what had happened. Michael the living son who was now older than his mother with a son of his own wanted nothing to do with mutants or the mother that abandoned him.
Soon after Angel learned that Lucy had the power of suggestion which is why he was so easily swayed to leave his friends behind and assist her to look for her son instead. The two then flew back to the Promise to aid the rest of the X-Men in their escape. After releasing Havok with the help of Professor X's astral form she helped Havok make up his mind to help stop Magneto with the use of her mutant ability. She also helped point Angel to the rest of the X-Men that were in a battle with the Mole Man while she stayed behind and tried to get Lorna out of her hibernation chamber.
Eventually Lucy was able to wake up Lorna and the rest of the Promise except for Tobias, who suspiciously couldn't wake up even though his vitals were normal moments prior. It's hinted at by Lucy herself that she had something to do with it and that Tobias is dead. Lucy and the remaining members of Promise decided it best to remain awake and help mutants now before a war that may or may not even happen.
