Baron Samedi is named after a Voodoo deity of death. In the film he is known as "the man who cannot die". While Bond apparently kills him by throwing him into a snake pit, Samedi appears alive in the finale and laughing demoniacally. The implication is that he is immortal and may not be human at all.
