    Steampunk is sexy

    100 Words Or Less

Steampunk has a new hero and her name is Lady Mechanika! Joe Benitez introduces readers into the fascinating world of steampunk, set in 1878. Who is the mysterious Lady Mechanika and why has Master replaced her arms with mechanical limbs?

    So Then I Said...

"I love drawing strong, sexy female characters." -- Joe Benitez

I love reading about strong, sexy female characters so this book was immediately flagged when I flipped through Previews. Issue #0 serves as a teaser to the world that creator, writer and illustrator Joe Benitez will unleash in his brand new ongoing series starting in December and I can't be more eager after reading this issue. The art is just brilliant and I love the way the whole Victorian look and feel was portrayed in this issue. Did I mention almost the entire issue takes place in a sewer? I can't wait to see the world in daylight and to get the origin of Lady M.

At 14 pages of story, fours pages of creator commentary, and even a page with cookie recipes, you get just enough to whet your appetite. Much like Batwoman #0, the reader is briefly introduced to who the character is and what the overlying theme is to the series.

    Bottom Line

I highly recommend that readers go pick this up and give it a chance. There's no superheroes flying around and it's not set in the modern day and that's what I like about it. It's taking a genre that has rarely been done (steampunk) and infusing a sexy character into it. I don't think I even need to read Issue #1 before I would recommend it so this Issue #0 is highly Worth It at just $2.50.

There are two things I've never done until today. The first is read a comic published by Aspen, and the second is write a review for a comic of any calibre. Lady Mechanika changed all that for me.  A few months ago I saw the character designs for the leading lady while trawling through DeviantArt and as a huge fan of the Steam Punk genre my heart was automatically won, but a great character design isn't an automatic win in the world of comics, you must also factor in a great story with likeable ...

This one snuck up on me 0

So I had no idea what this book would be about nor had I read or seen anything on it before release except some artwork for a Campbell variant cover for issue #1, and my local comic store owner mentioning Turner as being one of the brain children of this book before he died. Needless to say this book was very very good. The writing was solid and the story was not to emo considering it's subject. The artwork is nothing short of amazing Benitez really nailed the feel of a true steampunk book, and ...
