I have long been suspicious of the overt association between the JLA and a single nation state manifested in its very title

True, its Marvel Universe counterparts such as the Avengers or FF are US based or predominantly American (whether by birth or naturalization pace the Black Widow, Quicksilver , the Scarlet Witch and others) but they at least prefer to style themselves "Earth's Mightiest Heroes"( when the FF was formed, in their first issue they pledged themselves to work for the good of not just America or even the West but humanity as a whole; given that the Cold War was an issue back in 1961, this was an act of rare broadmindedness on the part of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby).

True some of its members such as Hawkman,Aquaman or Wonder Woman are strictly speaking not US citizens but most of them are. What would happen if a superhero from a country which is NOT on good or friendly terms with the US such as( say, Putin's Russia , Venezuela, Cuba or North Korea) wanted to join the JLA or even wanted to work with a JLA member?

Is the JLA subject to affirmation action laws( as the Avengers are)? Can they (either as individuals or a group) operate in countries that are NOT on friendly terms with the US)?

Do they have security clearance( Batman may, but I'm not certain about say, the Martian Manhunter)?

@paracelsus: the Justice League and the Justice League of America are currently 2 different teams. The JLA is a US government formed super team, the JL is the world team.

Most likely because this comic book was created by an American company for American consumers.

It just sounds cool.

The Justice League was suppose to be a then modern revival of the popular Justice Society of America. Justice Society probably had America in the title due to overwhelming patriotism in America leading into, during, and after World War II. When Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox, and Mike Sekowsky brought the Justice League as modern Justice Society they probably wanted to keep the America in reference to Justice Society, they wanted patriotism through there books, or they thought it just sounded reall cool.

Yeah why do people hate the Netherlands (just kidding, I'm dutch and whenever I hear that I think the Netherlands, the colours are even in the correct order) and as a non-American I'm fine with it so I don't understand the hate

It switches around a lot. It's been plain ol' JL, JLI, and the new series is JLU. But what it boils down to is probably just that DC comics is based in the US, and largely catering to a US market.

I don't get it either. Especially when there are a few other JL teams that have no "America" in the title.
