A cosmic vampire comes to the Earth! Backup stories featuring Hourman and Wildcat.
"The Coming Of-- Starbreaker!"
Superman finds the Flash, the Green Lantern, and the Hawkman, fighting for their lives against robot insects, on Rann. Superman enters the fray, only to find his great powers seemingly ineffective. An x-ray vision scan gives Superman the idea of disrupting broadcast transmissions to the robotic insects. With the machine insects confused, the Justice League of America is able to destroy them. The Flash, the Green Lantern, and the Hawkman were accidentally transported to Rann, when the Justice League of America's teleportation beam crossed a zeta beam. The Justice League of America arrived on Rann, to find it imperiled by the Starbreaker.
A cosmic vampire of immense power, the Starbreaker unleashes hordes of Mechanix on worlds, driving them into their sun. The release of energy from the world's destruction is then absorbed by the Starbreaker. Beyond just the spent energy of dying worlds, the Starbreaker also feeds on the negative emotions of the planet's populace, as it gives rise to terror and despair. The Green Lantern's power ring picks up broadcast transmissions to two more groups of Mechanix. The Justice League of America divides into teams of two to deal with the threat. The Starbreaker dispatches energy duplicates of himself, to personally deal with the Justice League of America.
The Flash and the Green Lantern engage the Mechanix, in the city of New Narzam. Just as the Green Lantern is blocking the broadcast transmissions to the Mechanix, he is attacked by a Starbreaker. The Green Lantern bluffs the Starbreaker into believing his power ring has run out of power. The Flash, still surrounded by a protective force field, is quick to pick up on the Green Lantern's ruse. The Green Lantern hands his power ring over to the Starbreaker. With his defenses down, the Starbreaker is struck unconscious by a power ring generated fist. The Flash binds the Starbreaker. The Green Lantern feels validated that his friendship with the Flash is as strong as ever.
Superman, and the Hawkman, engage the Mechanix, in the holy city of Abdukara. On the verge of destroying the Mechanix, they are attacked by a Starbreaker. The Starbreaker tears the Hawkman's wings from his harness, then hurls the Winged Wonder to the ground. Superman rescues the Hawkman, before taken out the Starbreaker. The Justice League of America meet with Adam Strange. As the zeta beam radiation wears off, the Flash, the Green Lantern, and the Hawkman are drawn back to Earth. The Starbreakers also fade away. Enraged that he has been defeated by those he deems inferior, the Starbreaker makes plans to follow the Justice League of America to Earth.
