J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars, battles a murderous android. As the android defied it's programming to kill the Gypsy, the Martian Manhunter attempts to reason with it. The android, however, is not conflicted regarding murdering J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars. The Martian Manhunter attempts to probe the android's mind, to discern the location of it's creator, Professor Ivo. The memory of Vibe's murder drives J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars, into a fury, culminating in the android's destruction. The Gypsy learns of Vibe's murder. The Vixen attempts to convince Henry Heywood to stand down.

Enraged over Vibe's murder, Heywood refuses not to take action. Heywood, as Steel, departs the Vixen's company. Ivo, consumed by guilt over the Gypsy's murder, speaks with his therapist. Unbeknownst to Ivo, the Gypsy was not killed. Ivo's own android killer provided false data concerning the Gypsy's death. Ivo insists that he is not insane. Steel wanders the streets of New York, in broad daylight, hoping to draw Vibe's murderer out. Steel finds himself a pariah with the public, as anti-super-hero sentiment has swept the country. Steel is approached by the police, intent on arresting him. Steel recognizes one of the officers as one of Ivo's androids.

The Gypsy wants to avenge Vibe's murder, but the Martian Manhunter convinces her to remain with her family. The Gypsy embraces J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars, one last time. The Vixen prowls the rooftops of New York City. Steel attacks the android. To the eyes of the public, however, Steel appears to be savagely beating a police officer. The crowds scream at Steel to release the officer. Steel abducts the police officer/killer android, taking it to a more secluded setting. The android reveals that turning the public against Steel was part of it's plan. Then the android fires a bolt of energy that tears through Steel's shoulder. Steel battles for his life. The android melts Steel's face off.

The police respond to Steel's screams. Steel staggers out of the alley. The android strikes Steel from behind, burning a massive hole in his back. The police realize that their fellow officer isn't human. To protect the police officers, Steel sacrifices his life to destroy the android. Mortally wounded, Steel begs for help. The Martian Manhunter arrives on the scene. J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter From Mars, carries Steel back to Detroit. Steel's grandfather, Hank Heywood, declares that the damage to Steel's body is too extensive to save his life. To end Steel's suffering, the elder Heywood takes Steel off life support. Steel dies. Ivo has murdered another member of the Justice League of America.
