What would Joker do if Batman was died...

Like for good,Bruce Wayne died and nobody picked up the mantle or whatever you want to call it.Maybe I'm wrong but the whole idealogy surrounding The Joker is he is who he is because of Batman. So if Batman was to die would Joker continue his life of crime or would he just...stop and disappear?

EDIT: "What would Joker do if Batman died" rather lol.

I think it depends. If the Joker were responsible for Batman's death then he'd probably go about destroying everything that he stood for. That being the Bat-family, Gotham City, justice, the law, etc.

However, if Batman died at someone else's hand and stayed dead then I think the Joker would just disappear. He is completely obsessed with Batman and sees him as his only equal. If his greatest adversary and reason for existing was gone (not by his hand) I can't imagine he would continue his schemes.

If someone else killed Batman, the Joker would probably make it his life's goal to torture and horrifically murder that person. I've always been under the assumption that he wants to be the one that pulls the final trigger. But at the same time, I've read so many comics that assert the idea that the Joker refuses to kill Batman. He'll push him to the absolute edge of near-death, but he'll never kill him. He sort of believes that Batman is his soul mate, and that without him around, he has no purpose.

He'd feel really weird that he wouldn't have to plot against Batman every day.

Maybe he'd retire.

Also, Somebody would probably always take up the mantle.

Joker's activity doesn't revolve solely around Batman. He'd certainly react strangely to it, as expected, but he'd still be the Joker.

Tell harley to play the kazoo.

I think he'd cause havoc for a while, realize how boring life was now without Bats (even if the Robins stepped up). I think it might be the one crime he might feel bad about later.

@Sophisticated_Ignorance: He's probably try to find some other crimefighter to challenge him, after all... The only thing the Joker fears is boredom... So until he can find a worthy opponent he has to deal with the fact that "crime has no punchline"!

If he did it he'd probably end up killing himself or possibly going berserk and getting himself shot by a cop. If someone else did it he would become obsessed with destroying the person who ruined his fun.

Go read DeMatteis' Going Sane. It is a great story which basically answers your question (Batman stays "dead" for around six months but the story mainly follows the Joker's reaction to it).

Wasn't he comatose in Dark Knight Returns? Not read it in ages but that animated movie looked like he just gave up EVERYTHING, probably until he died.

Literally the same thing he does every time Bruce "dies"; disappear until he returns. He did it in the DKR universe, when Batman was killed during Final Crisis, and I believe he did the same after Batman's back was broken. (Can't remember for sure)

This. They've both had quite a few chances to pull the trigger on each other, but neither of them ever do.

I think many things would happen, also depending on the 'how bats die' part....

1. Actually go sane

2.go into comatose

3. If by someone else, hunt down the killer, make suffer, basically make him beg for death, finish him off. Initiate phase two..

4. Phase 2: momentarily fill the void of batman for gotham. Try to believe nothing has changed. Starting with recreating batman. Probably goad night wing or robin into filling bats' shoes. Even try hiring death stroke into filling bats' role for a while. Anything goes...

5. Probably would even try to honor his death and finish the rest with a bang! Meaning like bumping off batman's other rogues, sending his final regrets to the bat family, even apologize to harley and make her go live a normal life. And in the end: one last big crime, lure the cops out, goad them into firing and then..as he commits "suicide by cop" he closes his eyes and imagines one last tussle with batman.

Die.

Batman dies, Joker takes some time to decide how he feels about it, and Damian kills him while he's going through his own ish

Depends on which canon we are talking about. But in my opinion Batman is the purpose of his life, Batman is basically his everything (SEE ENDGAME by Snyder. Joker wants Batman and himself to live forever). Also his actions would depend on how Batman would die.

1. He would go into a catatonic state like in TDKR

2. He would kill himself (after he tortured and killed the one who killed Batman) because there are several examples that he does not really accept others as Batman, and without Batman there is no real meaning for his life

3. If he was the one who killed Batman he would either go sane or would still kill himself because life would be too boring without the only equal he ever accepted.

4. He would snap and try to help the Batfamily like in Batman and Robin

Relevant pic:

The only thing I do not accept is that he would do everything the same like unleashing havoc on Gotham and all, while not caring about Batman's death. That approach is pretty lame and only acceptable imo in the silly comics where they do not want to acknowledge the fact that they are bound together. Like pretty tightly... Like since 1986 TDKR. or even earlier.
