Garrett and Elektra ready for anything.

Despite a history of repeated criminal offenses - including assault, grand larceny, battery, and four counts of statutory rape - John Garrett ended up becoming an agent of SHIELD, with his past records clandestinely expunged.

After receiving certain injuries in his line of service, Garrett was outfitted with a steel plate in his head that could house a recorder, as well as a cybernetic left hand. Partnered with fellow agent Arthur Perry, Garrett was sent to San Concepcion to investigate the assassination of the country's leader. The assassin unfortunately turned out to be Elektra, and after being confronted by the two agents she would leave them both to die in an explosion.

Recovered by SHIELD and "upgraded" to a cybernetic body by ExTechOp, Garret swore revenge and became obsessed with pursuing Elektra, an obsession that may have been what helped him cope with no longer being all that human (which may have been Elektra's plan from the beginning). He eventually came to discover Elektra's mission to stop The Hand from gaining a presidential foothold over the world with candidate Ken Wind, who'd been possessed by the Hand's Beast, and so he allied himself with her for the greater good.

John Garrett was created by Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz. He first appeared in 1986's Elektra: Assassin #2.

Powers & Abilities

After being rebuilt as a cyborg, approximately 80% of John Garrett's body was replaced with SHIELD-issued cybernetics. Only his head and a few of his organs are still his own. He has plastic skin and metal alloy bones, with his muscular system comprised of a combination of pneumatics, hydraulics, and internal electrical generators. His cyborg body thereby grants him greatly enhanced strength, speed, stamina, durability, and agility.

As a SHIELD agent, Garrett is well-versed in both armed and unarmed combat. He is an excellent marksman and possesses considerable tactical ingenuity.

At some point, he joined HYDRA which was embedded within S.H.I.E.L.D. In 1990, he stepped on an IED in Sarajevo, leaving him mortally-wounded, but alive. Recovered by HYDRA Garrett survived these wounds when he became the first test subject in Project Deathlok, carried out by Cybertek Corporations to build a super soldier via cybernetic enhancements. Eventually, Garrett's organs would start failing, his biomechanical parts the only thing that keeping him alive. Sometime later he acted as Supervising Officer to Grant Ward, who he recruited to join HYDRA.

Under unknown circumstances, Garret began Project Centipede, an operation to create super soldiers. Using the identity of the Clairvoyant, Garrett would control the organization from behind the scenes. When Agent Phil Coulson was captured for information on how he came back to life so Project Centipede could make their super soldiers invincible, he contacted Raina for the first time providing her with information regarding Coulson's former love interest, Audrey Nathan, to coax him into willingly submitting to a mind probe machine. However, Coulson's team managed to rescue him before he could get anything useful. Later learning that Coulson's team was chasing Ian Quinn, Garrett ordered him to shoot Skye, so that he could follow Coulson's team to the place that resurrected Coulson, as the team would want to use it to save Skye's life. When Coulson and his team apprehend Ian Quinn, Garrett and his subordinate, Agent Antoine Triplett, board their plane requesting he be placed in their custody. Sometime later, two S.H.I.E.L.D. UAVs attack Garrett's plane under Agent Hand’s orders. With some assistance from Coulson, Garrett survives, returning once again to Coulson's team. Once landed, the team successfully infiltrates the Hub and captured the main computer room. While trying to convince Coulson that Hand deserved to die, he accidentally revealed information about Raina that Coulson never disclosed to anyone; outing himself as the true Clairvoyant and a member of HYDRA. In the ensuing battle, Coulson and May manage to kill the HYDRA agents and capture Garrett. Ward volunteers to accompany Hand to the Fridge so he can see to Garrett's imprisonment personally. However, while being transported to the Fridge, Ward kills both Agent Hand and the two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents guarding Garrett.

He then personally leads a mission to the Fridge to retrieve secret S.H.I.E.L.D. weaponry; obtaining weapons such as the 0-8-4 found in Peru and Gravitonium. He also released several inmates, including Blackout. After discovering that Coulson and his team had fled to the S.H.I.E.L.D. base Providence, Garrett ordered Ward to return to his old team. When Grant returns with a hard drive containing all of Coulson's team's research and the Bus, Garrett revealed to Ward that his organs were failing, and that Cybertek only gave him a month or two more to live. After leaving the base in Cuba, Fitz and Simmons were caught spying on the plane. Ward took them aboard for Garrett to deal with, but Fitz triggered an EMP device disguised as a toy buzzer, shorting out Garrett's robotics, worsening his condition. Near death, Garrett ordered Ward to kill the two and Raina to inject the recreated GH-325 drug into the Centipede serum that had been keeping him alive. Raina complied, seeming to cause an Extremis reaction, before Garrett stabilized and claimed to "feel the universe".
