    John Constantine

Character » John Constantine appears in 1558 issues.

John Constantine, the Hellblazer, is a working-class magician, occult detective and a golden-tongued con man. Last week we spoke to Jeff Lemire about his take over of DC'sGREEN ARROW starting this February (you can read that interview here). Yet, it doesn't seem like that's all that Lemire has in store for fans. Earlier today DC Comics announced that the SWEET TOOTH creator will be taking John Constantine to a whole other level with the release of CONSTANTINE this March. Lemire enjoyed tackling John Constantine so much in his JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK series that he will be doing a whole lot more of the character, and he'll be getting a little bit of help from Ray Fawkes and artist Renato Guedes.

    No Caption Provided
John Constantine is my favorite character. He has been since I was sixteen and I grabbed a copy of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Hellblazer 61 from my local comic shop, Olympic Records in Windsor, Ontario. I was hooked from the moment I saw that amazing Glen Fabry cover with John, leaning, exhausted and bloody, scalpel in hand, against a door frame. I quickly went back and scrounged for every back issue I could, discovering the rest of Ennis' amazing run as well as Jamie Delano's groundbreaking original issues.

"I'd known Constantine from Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run, but his solo book was what really hooked me. The mix of magic, politics, humor and horror as well as John's undeniable cool, really struck a chord with me. I continued to follow Constantine through all 300 issues of Hellblazer and have had the unbelievable fortune to end up writing him in Justice League Dark. And now, along with my good friend and JLDark co-writer, Ray Fawkes, I get to help shepherd Constantine on the next stage of his journey as co-plotter of his new solo monthly comic, CONSTANTINE in March.

The writer cited that Constantine has been a favorite character of his since he was sixteen, and having had the opportunity to write him in the JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK series was simply not enough. According to Lemire, Ray Fawkes will be assisting the writer and artist Renato Guedes will take over on the art for the issue.

    == TEASER ==
Ray will be doing the heavy lifting, scripting the book (I've read his first three scripts and they are fantastic!!) along with the talented Renato Guedes on art. As someone who has nothing but respect for the character and the incredible legacy of writers and artists who have worked on him in the past, I want to do everything I can to help create a comic that pays respect to who John was, but also reintroduces him to a whole new audience. CONSTANTINE will be different from Hellblazer. No doubt about it. For one thing JC now haunts Manhattan instead of London (the reason for the move will be explained in Issue 3!). And, he once again has one foot planted firmly in the DC Universe, much like he did in the original Swamp Thing stories. But rest assured, Ray and I are not pulling any punches in Constantine. John's still the same as he always was.

We have a bunch of cool stories coming your way, from the ongoing threat of the mysterious CULT OF THE COLD FLAME, to a brand new Sargon the Sorcerer and a horror called THE WITCHBREAKER, Constantine will have his blood-stained hands full. I hope you come a long for the ride.

It was originally announced in November that Robert Venditti would be writing it. Perhaps it's Lemire's familiarity with the character in JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK that made those plans change. What do you think of the news that Jeff Lemire and Ray Fawkes will be launching a self-titled ongoing series? Are you looking forward to the book this March, 2013?

DC's already talked about the reason, Venditti was just too busy, and Constantine was the easiest one for him to drop since he'd barely started.

Haven't read too much Hellblazer, so I don't have the emotional baggage tied to it as others do, so I'm definitely giving this a shot.

I love Jeff Lemire, but hate to think of him being stretched thin. Writing 4 on goings and writing and drawing Trillium. I just hope his work doesn't suffer.

One writer with four books a month. I just hope he can keep it up and not get burnt out. Pretty soon DC will have 3 writers Johns,Snyder,Lemire on the whole new 52.

@InkInk: Well, since Ray Fawkes is doing the heavy lifting for this as well as assisting him on JLD, that should take off some of the pressure.

Though still very saddened by Hellblazer's cancellation, my indifference about Venditti writing Constantine has now increased to mild excitement with this announcement.

My experience with Hellblazer is about the same as Lemire; I started with Ennis/Dillon's run then went back to Delano, and have been lucky enough to find a great deal of newer issues in 25 or 50 cent bins in the area, unfortunately this wasn't all that long ago, so I have a lot of catching up to do (luckily I've heard DC plans on releasing the entire series in a coherent numbering of trades at long last). As far as Lemire himself I've only ever read Animal Man (because I loved Grant Morrison's run on the character) and have been picking it up since #1 and can't let go! So anyway I'm familiar enough with Constantine to really adore the character and Lemire's writing hasn't let me down yet (however I am starting to think Rot World is starting to overstay it's welcome) so I think this is a good decision by DC, especially since I'd never even heard of this Robert Vendetti guy they were going to get to do it. To be perfectly honest though, Constantine has been in the last couple issues of Animal Man and while it DOES feel like Constantine it's definitely different seeing him with a team (keep in mind I haven't read JLD for this reason also, Constantine is almost like the Punisher to me in that I don't see him as being a team kind of guy) having to cope with this New 52 universe, when he was usually on the sidelines of the DCU off in his own little occult corner. So I'm hoping they're able to put him back in his element, regardless of the fact that he'll be in Manhattan.

I was going to skip this series, mainly because I just didn't trust the writer and I didn't think I'd need it since Constantine is on JLD and I could just go to that to get my Constantine fix but now.....dang it. Jeff Lemire is such a great writer and I enjoy his work and even after juggling JLD, Animal Man, Sweet Tooth and The Underwater Welder not a single series dropped in quality.

Guess I gotta shell out more cash every month and pick this up.

Great news! Lemire is the more than capable of writing Constantine and hopefully keeping the feel of Hellblazer for a new generation of readers. I know its hard for some to let go of the incredible run Hellblazer had, those stories still exist, but its about keeping the character around for another 30 years and if that means getting the New 52 treatment then i say its totally worth it. Can't wait and have high hopes...........of course if it turns out to be a stinker, i've got my Lemire voo-doo dolls ready!

He's got a co writer so he should be able to keep churning out his other superb books.

Sorry, but one of the central aspects of Constantine's character is that he's a London resident. The idea of taking him out of London and dropping into New York is just stupid. I didn't work for the Constantine movie, after all.

Is Constantine going to remain in JLD or just go solo? If he remains, then I will probably just stick with that, Zatanna is my favorite character from that book but I would find it much less enjoyable without Constantine.
