From The Longbox : JLA # 38
With this issue Grant Morrison begins to close some story and wrap up the Injustice Gang. All the while he sets up the fall of the next Injustice Gang member, and continues to build toward the final showdown with Mageddon. It is quite a feat for him to keep each story arch flowing. Yet some do feel like filler.
For example, a lot of the action comes from Superman Martian Manhunter
and Orion fighting the General. Sure it fills the panel, and would be gruesome were it not for the generals purple blo
od, it actually slows down the pacing of the rest of the story.
The highlight would have to be yet another bad ass Batman moment from the pen of Grant Morrison. His way of dispatching Prometheus is both funny and clever.Giving Batman a line of dialogue you may never have thought to have heard.
Hardly any time at all is spent with Queen bee in metropolis as she has turned the city into a hive. This is all set up for next issue, and says to us basically Plastic man has a brain, and nothing is what it seems. Sure to be dealt with next issue. As of now, it feels unnecessary except to remind us the characters are there.
The rest of the book is spent rallying the troops. Whether it is Aquaman rallying Atlantis, or Kyle Rayner rallying the worlds heroes it is nothing we haven't heard before. Then again we also get to see Kyle coaxing Luthor out of being controlled by Mageddon. That was pretty cool.
In the end .. it is a middle story issue. It serves if you are reading the trade paperback, or the individuals in consecutive order, but as a stand alone issue it is left wanting.
