    Iron Man

Character » Iron Man appears in 11204 issues.

Tony Stark was the arrogant son of wealthy, weapon manufacturer Howard Stark. Tony cared only about himself, but he would have a change of heart after he was kidnapped by terrorists and gravely injured. Pressured to create a weapon of mass destruction, Stark instead created a suit of armor powerful enough for him to escape. Tony used his vast resources and intellect to make the world a better place as The Invincible Iron Man. Stark's super hero identity led him to become a founding member of the Avengers.

We all have trade paperback (TPB) collections we'd like to see. Here's one of mine:

    Proposed Title:What If? Iron Man.
    Alternate Title:Iron Man: What If?.
    Collecting 8 Issues:
    Covers: (click to enlarge)
TPB Cover: What If (1989) #8
TPB Cover: What If (1989) #8

Iron Man is a long time favorite character of mine, so any Iron Man collection is a good one in my book. This proposed What If? collection is no exception. Out of all of them, the story of Tony Stark as Sorcerer Supreme is the biggest surprise. I have yet to read that issue, and I've been completely curious to figure out what train of thought led to an amalgamation of Iron Man and Doctor Strange.

What If #33 ('77 series) is just for the Iron Man story, and #53 ('89 series) is just for the War Machine story. For the cover, I'd use What If? (1989) #8, because it's a good shot of Iron Man, and the Armor Wars was a favorite storyline.

Update 11/8/12: I added in the 2011 one-shot: What If? Iron Man: Demon In An Armor. I'd almost use this as the cover for the TPB, except that I've really tried to stay away from using the one-shots' covers for the TPB's. I think this would be the one Marvel would use though, if they were to actually publish this TPB.

Would you buy it? Let me know in the comments, and thanks for reading.

@william knowles: I think I have the WI Special and WI #8.  I have a bunch of What If issues, because I started buying what I could find, just before Marvel started their What If Classic trades.  Same thing happened when I decided to start rebuilding my New Mutants collection - Marvel came out with the New Mutants Classic trades.  ...I wonder what would happen if I "decided" to rebuild my Thing collection?  Hm...
