    Iron Man

Character » Iron Man appears in 11204 issues.

Tony Stark was the arrogant son of wealthy, weapon manufacturer Howard Stark. Tony cared only about himself, but he would have a change of heart after he was kidnapped by terrorists and gravely injured. Pressured to create a weapon of mass destruction, Stark instead created a suit of armor powerful enough for him to escape. Tony used his vast resources and intellect to make the world a better place as The Invincible Iron Man. Stark's super hero identity led him to become a founding member of the Avengers.

Why is he not useing the bleeding edge armor anymore ?

@Z3RO180: I believe he explained that the Bleeding Edge armour was great as a flexible tool. It was always reliable and had all the basic functions to most case scenarios.

However, Gillen wanted to bring a more familar, probably movie-oriented, Tony Stark/Iron Man back into the Marvel Universe.

Tony said that it was more effective to build armors for specific purposes, rather than one armor for everything.

The in story explanation was that with Extremis/Bleeding Edge, Tony was jacked into all the tech around him. Such as the cuffs and satellite he hacked into in World War Hulk, for example. Problem was, this was a two way street, of sorts. Tony started 'backing up' his memory, literally. He'd create complete digital copies of his mind just in case anything should happen to him. As I understand it, a rather vicious one of Tony's old villains got hold of one of his backups, and made a few additions. When Tony ended up rebooting his brain with it, it gave the villain total control of Tony's nervous system. You can imagine how... problematic... that was. Hence, Tony flushed his system of it. Started building solid armors again.

Granted, I may have been incorrect in some of the finer details. I was never entirely certain whether the villain in question actually did hack Tony's backup, or his mind directly through surrounding tech.

Gillen gives an explanation  in Iron Man #3 when Pepper wonders why Tony suddenly goes back to using different armors. His explanation was, and I quote, "...I could morph a repulsor cannon, sure...but a one-purpose unit ups the kicks" so instead of having a suit that basically can do anything his previous armors could do, in reality having not only ALL of his armors rolled into one but also having it where he could store it all inside himself and be able to access it at all times, he would rather have each suit separate and only serve a single function/purpose, and all of fro the simply reason to "up the kicks."

So what Gillen is saying is that instead of having Tony push his technology to the edge of possibilities, where he not only has access to his armor 24/7 but also has access to anything his previous suits had all rolled into one, he would rather have each armor separate and have it where he must have the suit assembled onto his body through robotic assemble. And his reasoning for why Tony Stark, the futurist, the man who's always looking ahead to better be ready for new threats, why Tony freakin' Stark would throw away the best and most logical armor he's ever built, all is because he just wants to "up the kicks!"

It's not only a lazy reason to make Tony more like his movie version, but it's completely out of character for Tony as he literally is going backwards. The only time Tony EVER wears an older armor is when he has no other choice. The Bleeding Edge armor was the most cutting edge armor Tony had ever built and pushes the bounds of his technology to the point that it is still being used by Kang the Conqueror in the future. More importantly, Tony's life is now completely at risk as during Fraction's run he pointed out that without Extremis or Bleeding Edge, Tony would be dead either by suicide bombers or by sabotage. The only reason why Gillen has thrown the whole Bleeding Edge armor out is because he wanted Iron Man to be more like his movie version and because Gillen wanted to have Tony using a new armor every issue. Which really, if you think of the possibilities and a little creativity, he technically could have still done that with the Bleeding Edge armor as it can reshape itself to become like any of Tony's armors, whether to his space armor, to undersea armor, and it is even able to create extra-mass (as seen in Invincible Iron Man when he created a huge repulsor cannon) which would mean he could probably reshape the armor into a Hulkbuster-size armor as well. The Bleeding Edge armor could probably even change color schemes, which would mean it could become completely black for stealth armor, white from arctic armor, or even camouflage.

Overall forcing Tony to go backwards is completely out of character and in the end makes Tony appear to be less worried about being the best prepared for any situation and keeping people safe and cares more about upping the kicks and having a good time despite putting others in danger.

All valid points, but Tony's not just a futurist. He's also a genius. That doesn't just mean that he's really smart. It means he gets bored. Imagine being able to literally build just about anything you'd need. What's that? Your microwave isn't working right? You build a new one that runs even better, has more accurate settings, requires no electricity, and can actually cook things like a stove.

Now imagine you've created your masterpiece. Your Mona Lisa, the epitome of your genius. You're an engineer, who has crafted the ultimate armor. Liquid metal, responds to thought, can assemble at a moments notice from within your body, painlessly. Not only that, but can reshape to whatever specs you require at a moments notice. Need a plasma cannon? Voila. Hulk Class Tasers? Boom, done. How about a good old fashioned repulsor? Standard issue, at your service. There's no where to go from here along this line of tech. Tony perfected it. There's no bugs in the system to work out. There's no possible improvements to be made. This is the perfect, ideal, set of armor.

So naturally, Tony got bored with it. Tony doesn't just keep building new armors to deal with new threats. He builds them with improvements that occurs to him. he could be having a drink with breakfast, or brushing his teeth, when something occurs to him that he could do better with his armor. So he'll jot it down and build it. But with the Extremis/Bleeding Edge, there's nowhere to go. Nothing to improve. It's perfection, and perfection is boring. ESPECIALLY to someone as smart as Tony Stark. He regressed back to solid armors not just 'for the kicks', he did it so he could return to doing what he loves: Designing, improving, and building new sets of armor. Tony loves just sitting down in his lab and tinkering with tech for a while. If he kept using the Extremis/Bleeding Edge, there'd be no reason to do that. It's only natural he stopped.

But how is going backwards improving though? I can understand Tony tweaking his armor, changing the design, upgrading, etc. but taking a step back isn't Tony Stark nor is realistic. The whole thing of him getting bored is exactly Tony's personality, he's always thinking about the armor and how to improve it (I mean he was designing Extremis while he was doing an interview, drawing the designs all while giving a detailed description of how he became Iron Man for goodness sake), but going back to having the armor to where he has to have it assembled on to his body isn't improving, it's downgrading. Sure he builds new armors, but he never builds them like the previous ones. He would never dump his classic red and gold armor that can fit in a suitcase for his original grey armor just because he's board, so why would he give up liquid armor for an armor in a suitcase; Tony's not only about designing and building new armor he's about improving the armor and making it better.

As for him having perfected the armor and having nowhere left to go, that's not completely true. Back in the 90s the idea of Extremis where the armor can literally float through the air and assemble itself onto ones body or having a liquid armor that can be stored inside ones self was completely beyond anything writers could come up with. As for what could be an upgrade to liquid armor? What about nanobots which assemble onto your body or heck just scrap the whole liquid armor completely and simply make the human body the armor. Instead of making him Iron Man in and out, he IS the Iron Man.

I'm all for Tony improving and designing new armors, my issue is with writer having him go backwards and downgrading his armor when he should instead be upgrading them. But also, when you really think about it, there will come a point when Tony has gone as far as he can go with the suit (at least as far as we as humans can think of that is) as really there isn't anything Tony HASN'T built as an armor. Just think about it, you're explanation as to why Tony has gone back to building his armors from scratch is because he's board and feels he can better "improve" his armors, but how is he designing anything he hasn't already? Think about: Suitcase armor? Done; Undersea armor? Done; Space armor? Done; Stealth? Yup; Hulkbuster? Smashingly so; Arctic? Done; Liquid? Done.

Just because he paints the armor black or gives it Tron lights doesn't mean anything if all it does something a previous armor he's built can do. And so far this is exactly what Tony has done in his new series, not upgrading or moving forward, simply going backwards which is not Tony Stark.

in the iron man 5 we are kind of given the impression that Tony is a bit afraid of extremis. He says that it's "Too easy" a couple different times. I'm sure he'll come around. Once he gets his butt kicked by some off worlders.

And so far this is exactly what Tony has done in his new series, not upgrading or moving forward, simply going backwards which is not Tony Stark.

he's basically saying that while the Bleeding Edge could do everything...like the Bleeding Edge could become stealth armor but it would never be as good as a suit designed specifically for stealth

Why wouldn't it though? I mean I get what you're saying, but I just don't see how having a single armor that focuses solely on one function, such as stealth, would benefit over having an armor that's multifunctional and can give Tony access to a variety of tools and weaponry over just having a select set. Having just a stealth suit, for example, which just focuses on stealth is going to be pretty useless when Tony ends up giving himself away (which he most likely will/would) or his enemies end up having some kind of tech that can detect his armor even while cloaked (which is also a possibility), and if he only has an armor that focuses solely on stealth than his weaponry is probably doing very limited which wouldn't help much in battle and put him at disadvantage. But having an armor that can switch functions with a thought, say being able to go from having a stealth armor to having an more weaponized armor for heavy combat would be pretty handy in the field over having a one purpose, one functional armor.
