Digital Surprise
I am not a big gamer and I am always skeptical of "digital firsts" especially one built on the premise of a video game. I do realize though that my bias against digital firsts is irrational since many I have purchased have been quite entertaining and the 99 cent price tag makes it hard to pass by. “Injustice, God’s Among Us” is based on the upcoming April release of the Mortal Kombat style video game. Having only seen the trailer and extended game play video I was intrigued by what the possible storyline could be. It opens with the Man of Steel now ruling the world with an iron fist as told to us by Batman. Flashback 5 years prior to Superman’s rule and a surprise attack on a pregnant Lois Lane that sets the events in motion. The interaction prior to the key event between Clark and Lois is upbeat and loving. Even Superman's relationship with Batman is more friendly and open than anything I have ever read...at least from Superman's perspective. It may be a simple product of the joyous news he wants to share with Bruce. Either way, it's a nice take on how they deal with each other. Once Joker and Harley make their appearance you know immediately that the upbeat tone will nosedive quickly into darkness.
This story did a lot to tide the skepticism of the digital first format and the 99 cent price makes it worth giving it a look. writer Tom Taylor does a great job with the set-up and dialogue between the characters. I don't know much about the art of Jheremy Raapack but it serves this story well. The revelation of Superman's dictatorship from the start makes this a book I will stay on board with and even serves to stoke my interest in the upcoming video game.
