Origin
Hot Dog is a sheepdog of uncertain origin. At some point in his life he was taken in by Jughead Jones and his family. He quickly took on the mannerisms of his adopter, including a love of food, an inherent laziness, and a surprising level of intelligence.
Creation
Hot Dog made his first appearance in Pep Comics #224.
Character Evolution
Upon his original introduction to comics, Hot Dog was identified as belonging to Archie Andrews. There followed a brief period during which his ownership was uncertain. Eventually, he found a permanent home with the Jones family.
Alternate Versions
Hot Dog received a short-lived series in which he was slightly anthropomorphized and living in a high-tech doghouse. He and his robot butler Bertie engaged in fantastical and science fiction adventures.
Afterlife With Archie
It was the death of Hot Dog that catalyzed the Afterlife of Archie-Escape from Riverdale series. In the first issue, Reggie Mantle accidentally hits and kills Hot Dog with his car. Jughead finds his beloved pet and takes him to Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, hoping that she or her aunts can heal him with their magic. Jughead is told that it is too late, that Hot Dog is already dead. Against her aunts' advice, Sabrina secretly borrows the Necronomicon from their library in order to raise Hot Dog from the dead. However, when the pet later rises, Hot Dog has been transformed by the spell into a mindless, aggressive carrier for a zombie plague. He bites Jughead, and retreats beneath the porch of the Jones' home, snarling at the unwary Archie.
