Another Star Wars 'anthology' movie has been announced. While the main set of films will focus on the ongoing story, we've seen some of the side movies will feature other characters and periods in the timeline.

Today at StarWars.com, it was that everyone's favorite scruffy looking scoundrel will get his story fleshed out some more. Christopher Miller and Phil Lord will direct the movie. Their credits include The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and more.

Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan will write the screenplay with the story focusing on a younger Hal Solo. We'll get to find out how he became the thief, smuggler, and scoundrel we've all grown to love before that infamous day when Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker met him in the Mos Eisley cantina. The film will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy and executive produced by Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin and co-produced by Will Allegra.

Han Solo's past has been fleshed out previously in the Expanded Universe novels. We know those are no longer canon. We've also seen an interesting development from Han's past in the recent STAR WARS #6. Perhaps this movie will shed some light on that situation.

The movie is slated for a May 25, 2018 release.

Wait, so they are making a new trilogy, Ben Kenobi will get a film series, and Solo too? Disney is making too much money. (+)

Meh if Harrison Ford isn't Han Solo I'm not that interested.

Han Solo is getting a spin-off now? Disney is really going to milk this franchise anyway.

Meh, Han was only interesting because Harrison Ford, not the character itself for me. Also I'd rather they explore completely new ideas. Oh well.

I'm a little disappointed by the spinoff announcements. I kinda wanted new content from Star Wars.

I'm in, specially because it will mean (hopefully) that we get more Chewie!!

I don't care about what "really" happened in between the movies anymore. I just want to know what happens AFTER episode VI onwards.

Well, I, for one, am actually quite excited at the prospect of a Han getting a "Solo" film

Purist huh? I can respect that view. Though for those like me who were into the Expanded Universe, a new take on Han Solo won't be a problem. Kind of like living with the infinite possibilities of the Marvel Multiverse, we now have a Star Wars Multiverse. A brand that will live on for a long time and which will experience various reimaginings.

Glad i'm not the only one uninterested in Han Solo.

Have been hoping that Darth Krayt makes a dramatic debut in movies, TV or a comic book run by marvel. Don't care how as long as if there is mention of him he comes across as he does the first time around. So under rated as a character.

I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Pratt gets cast as Solo. It may be a bit too much for Disney to have him as major characters in two franchises but I'd totally watch him in star wars.

I feel like lord and miller are the next del toro, over the past few months they've been either rumored or confirmed to be doing sooo many things. I really hope their work isn't choppy being divided by so many projects

@guru_crack: Since they wiped out the expanded universe, I'm not sure how likely Krayt is to be reintroduced. I would really like them to adapt some fan favorites into the new canon, of course Mara Jade tops my list.

A Han Solo film without Han Solo (Ford).

The Bobba Fett movie is totally do able because the actor didn't have that much of a major role in the latest movies (he was there but his scenes out of the suit werent that impressive). With that I mean his face is replacable.

But Solo was one of the characters who created this franchise you can't just throw any actor at that.

I while ago I heard that Anna Kendrick could be cast as the new Han solo. Doubt is has any truth to it though.

Me too. I love that Lord and Miller are on board but I was really hoping they come up with something new as well.

@yung_ancient_one: Disney is going to over saturate the movies and the overall Star Wars market to the point of making even the biggest fan boy want to puke at the sight of Boba Fett. What's next? threepio gets his own franchise? The golden goose is on the chopping block and I am seriously concerned.

I'm looking forward to this. I have no issues with them bringing in a new actor to play a younger Han Solo, they did it with Obi-Wan and that turned out fine (the character, at least did). Personally I hope we see Boba Fett in this as well,

There's a new movie with Harrison Ford where they either CGI somebody to look like a younger Ford or they cast somebody who looks nearly identical to the man. My first thought was "they NEED that kid for a Han Solo film..." Hope it wasn't CGI...

He WASN'T CGI! Some kid named Anthony Ingruber. Plays a younger version of Ford's character from Age of Adaline...

I have no problem with a Ford-less Han. Ford was great, don't get me wrong, but there've been new Spocks and Khans that were just fine with me, and I'm sure Solo can be re-done well too.

As long as they include his time at the imperial academy and explain how he got the blood stripes I'll be O.K and no harrison ford is a good thing in my book.

I mean, if any Star Wars character fits Lord and Miller's snappy, self aware style it's Han, but imagine how incredible a Jar Jar movie by them would be.

The idea of a Han Solo-centric movie and his life pre-New Hope is intriguing. It's truly a shame if at least a portion isn't based on the Han Solo trilogy from the Expanded Universe. Oh well, I'm still interested and can only speculate what the story will include. Nar Shaddaa? Kessel Run? Millenium Falcon acquisition? Chewie first meeting?

If they weren't making it about one of the most loved characters in the franchise I might agree with you but there's plenty of people, especially casual fans, who'd love to see a movie about Han Solo.

Plus, do you consider all the expanded universe novels, comics and video games to be milking it too? Those have been around forever but no one bothers to complain about that because they were too busy enjoying it.

Lastly, none of these movies would ever be made if they weren't going to make someone superrich. So whether it's episode 7, episode 1 or some new spin-off movie the studio only has ONE concern and that's profit.

This movie wont be on my radar until is find out who will be playing Han?

Without Ford, what's the point.
